Only P-5 team not to make ESPN's Top-75 college recruiting rankings

It is but you can get a general feel on the possible success of a prospect based on what teams are recruiting them.

At a minimum, I like to see heavy G5 offer lists on HS guys we're taking a flyer on, and work up from there. That isn't this class this year, and you're not going to have a chance in the rankings without a homer analyst at the sites without, at a minimum, landing prospects your peers wanted.

And here's the other thing - with our portal kids, people rally around Bellamy and Gould because of their P5 offers and their rankings at the sites. You can't have it both ways.
There are always exceptions -- Justin Pugh, Chandler Jones, Bergeron. Guys who did not have top offers, maybe weren't well known to ranking services, maybe they committed early, but out coaches for some reason knew better. But we have to win a few more battles for kids who are also sought by peer programs.

If a kid doesn't have offers from P5 schools, but has good metrics (40 times, height, wt) and/or performance metrics (rushing yards, for example) or all-star nominations -- maybe we found a gem. Or maybe the kid was a late bloomer, who wasn't on the radar in the summer before his senior year, but developed late (Jay Bromley). It can happen, but a little of that does not lead to consistent bowl games.

Vandy is S$C. Kansas and Indiana are Flagship State schools. BC is Parochial Catholic royalty behind ND. Wake and Duke sit smack dab in fertile Southern recruiting grounds, with top academics.
What's the saying - It you're looking around the poker table for the weakest player, then it's probably...
Wrong about Vandy. They complain more about NIL and transfer portal than this board, and a crappy stadium that is only just beginning to be refurbished

We're discussing hs recruiting ranks. Vandy is Top 50.

there’s only so much I can care about. It’s Dino’s job to field a good team and make bowls. If he can do it with low HS recruiting rankings then whatever. If not, he’ll be gone soon enough.

And of course as soon as he shows some promise, he portals to a bi$$er program and we're left in the lurch again.
It's a portal world, and we're living in it. The true HS studs are all spoken for, and if you find an outlier & try to develop them, they're likely to get poached anyway. Any non-SEC/B1G, or +30 program, is not gonna do too much HS recruiting wise. Jmho

I think those diamonds in the rough and any/all 3 stars are the victims. Top programs will lose their 4 star depth to mid-tier schools like us. They will replenish with our best proven development players, or 5 star HS kids. We take less HS kids because we still can’t get 4 and 5 star kids until they are transferring for PT. The 3 stars are going to have much fewer P5 options, and will be relegated to lower conferences or divisions. This may impact their development and hurt their potential to transfer up.

Also IMO schools will spend less on the program, as recruiting becomes more about booster funded NIL and less about wiffle ball fields and nap rooms. That can also impact nutritionists and treatment rooms, etc. more like the NFL where so much of that responsibility is on the player.

Outstanding question for me is whether or not the NCAA looses all its teeth and academic standards and qualifiers also loose their place, dropping the investment in tutoring, and other such support systems.

Yikes!

ESPN+ just released their article: 2023 football recruiting: Ranking the top 75 college teams

Bottom of each P-5 conference:
  • ACC
    Virginia : 67
    Syracuse : Unranked
  • Big 12
    Kansas : 71
  • B1G
    Indiana : 74
  • PAC-12
    Cal : 75
  • SEC
    Vanderbilt : 50
Ranked G5 Programs:
  • UCF : 45
  • Houston : 56
  • Colorado St. : 59
  • UTSA : 61
  • SMU : 63
  • Memphis : 65
  • Boise St. : 68
  • Tulane : 69
  • Temple : 70
  • Cincinnati : 72
For the sole purpose of distracting myself from the SU (lack of) rank, I would just point out that UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati will be playing in the XII this year, so while not technically a P5 school until July, their players are being recruited to play in a P5 conference and should be included with the XII.

Our classes have been getting worse and worse recently. Monroe leaving doesn't even hurt us at this point, because no one was really landing guys that had a ton of competition. We desperately need bigger NIL opportunities and to be unique in our recruiting approach.
