good. Things need to be not normal and safe so we can get to a better place. The athletes themselves are begging for it
You‘re assuming that there is a problem beyond the one created by a lazy narrative.

I think reporters should do their job (which they’ve done a terrible job of doing thus far), and commentators should stay in their swim lane. They aren’t qualified to make the statements that they’re making.

Put more simply, reporters need to start earning their paychecks, and people need to start being less stupid before we can get to a better place.

Watched about 5 mins of the Memphis game. I'm the guy watching college football from noon to 11 but I just can't get into Texas st/smu or eku/Marshall. Will watch the Navy game tomorrow.

It's interesting that people whose whole world has been sports think that because they have the mike, they should be preaching to people who didn't turn them on to hear their thoughts on anything other than that game at hand.
Maybe that's why NBA ratings are down so much?
So you're in the "shut up and dribble" camp?

If not now, when? No one's going to listen to the athletes before they obtain their fame or after they retire. They have some leverage when they are at the height of their abilities. That is the time to use it.

I can't prove it, but I believe that the stand taken by the SU football players when they sat out of practice and made their concerns known contributed more than a little to the ACC's improved safety protocols.

Yeah, but I never used to have to. I'd like to hear commentators comment on the game. I'm not asking for much.

EXACTLY, people are looking for a respite from the dumpster fire of politics. Tuning into a flick starring African Americans we dont worry about a sudden take on social injustice, we enjoy the flick for what it is. If you desire the constant coverage of what's going on politically, we know what channels to turn to. That said, I am 100% behind BLM as yes, our cops have been committing egregious errors taking lives. Something that has been a problem for decades, just lately being caught on video in this phone tech age we live in. change is needed.

Why can't both things be ok? I care, but I also would like to enjoy something that I enjoy for 3 hours. I have the rest of the week to hear about injustice.

I think that’s the point they are trying to make. It’s a big deal because it’s impeding on the things we love.

Sports truly are a kind of opiate. This whole thing (pandemic + civil unrest/BLM) has helped me gain some perspective. I’m better for it.

Must be so hard to listen to. Bet it beats funerals and conversations about how to stay safe around the police.

No. The conversation *should* be between all of us. If you’re human, this conversation is important and overdue.

Oh please these guys are multi millionaires making money off everything from the everyday fan to slave labor in communist China. Please spare me the high horse these players are riding in on. Sports are about competition and losing yourself for those brief 4 quarters. I have a lot of police officers as friends and not one of them are out trying to murder ppl. At the end of the day there is a common denominator with these tragic deaths. Someone broke the law and often time repeatedly and police officers where called. Are there bad eggs in the police departments, yes but the vast majority is here to protect you and I. If everyone followed a simple rule, don’t break the law, we wouldn’t Have these issues.

So why stop at Black Lives Matter? Jews and Jewish institutions were the overwhelming target of religion-based hate crimes in the United States in recent years. Where are all these athletes who want everyone to talk about racism when it comes to Anti-Semitism? They want everyone to take on their cause, but were basically crickets (with a few rare exceptions) when several of them have recently made very anti-semitic conspiracy comments and when there have been numerous anti-semitic hate crimes in the last couple of years. Should we talk about that during the telecast, as well? Do their Lives not Matter?

Thanks for repeating the shut up and dribble argument for the 100th time.

This threads about to get moved imo

1. It’s because they are multimillionaires and that people care about them that their voice matters. Normal folks voices get drowned out.
2. Because they seem overlook 1 bad thing (Chinese labor) doesn’t mean the issue of police misconduct is above reproach. (People run the kind of argument when they know their case is weak)
3. Whole segments of Americans are treated unequally by police - enough of the time - that they all are saying enough. My experience with police (I have family members are close friends that are police) is seeing them as protectors and good people. But because it’s good for me does not mean it’s good for others.
4. What crime do you see as equal to being choked to death under someone’s knee or shot at home in your own bed? It’s not justice people are upset with. Black communities want criminals to be brought to justice too. It’s good policing they are wanting. We should want that for all Americans, full stop.

You don’t have to be perfect to stand up for a cause. It doesn’t disqualify you. If it did, lots of good stuff would never happen.

(This is the Fox News style of argument and I’m over it)

So one injustice can't be stopped because other injustices exist?

I don't mean to speak for Capt. Tuttle but I believe he was referring to the announcers.

It can and should, but it's hypocritical when certain people (Hello, Stephen Jackson) expect everyone to take on their cause 24/7 when they at best could care less about others suffering or at worst if they're followers of Louis Farrakhan (of which there are many), spread hate about others. Any hate is unacceptable, not just when it applies to you.
Why are anti-racism forces silent on anti-Semitism?

Not just Chinese labor but Chinese oppression with regard to freedom in Hong Kong and in China itself. LBJ showed himself to be a complete ignoramus on the topic.

Perhaps. But he just as well could have been referring to the players. Or announcers and players.

NBA: You can write any social justice slogan you feel is appropriate.
Player: I want "Free Hong Kong" on mine.
NBA: Except for that.

Did you know if you go to the NBA official fan site, you can customize a jersey to say anything you want on the back. However if you put in "Free Hong Kong" it will deny your request. I guess the NBA's love for all lives has a price attached to it.

So when the new, woke NBA is pushing "social justice" it just feels a lot like virtue signaling.

I think the players might be more willing to take that stand than the league.

If play by play announcers want to go to an appropriate place to make speeches about causes, I whole heatedly embrace their right to do so, and encourage it. Just don't invite me to listen to you call a game, then change the game.
Players can do what they want. When I watch games, which is not as often as I used to, for many reasons, I don't turn on the start of the games.
God forbid that there be a discussion of all of the facts, rather than the politically appropriate portions of the facts.
Where would we be if Floyd and Blake had obeyed lawful orders of the police (and for Floyd, the court)?
Not excusing the deaths, but just do what's requested of you, and you are still alive.

Going to impact the players playing the game a lot more than it will those of us watching on TV -- at least in my opinion.

Will even the playing field for road trips by a lot.
With the way espn/abc has historically muted the environmental sounds i doubt it will impact my viewing experience.

Personally, during the game I would prefer the announcers talk about the game.

Then you would not be a big fan of Vitale waxing poetic about his charity or the many choirboys who play for Duke. :)

I think the big problem is white folk who are in the same situations don't end up treated with deadly force at the same rate. You know, equal before the law.
