OT: 2014 U.S. News & World Report rankings (ACC)

Bringing in students with lower test scores and GPAs lower rankings. That's a fact. What is more important, saying that you have an even number of each race, or that your average SAT score is 100 points higher?

Buzz spent millions on putting brick in the sidewalks around campus. Nancy spent millions on projects that were completely unrelated to the facilities the university needed to upgrade. She overspent and the return on the investment wasn't there.
Hold on. Mean GPa for incoming rose under cantor I believe. And sat numbers were off 20 points under her reign, not 100s.

She oversaw Whitman, the life sciences complex, the new law school all of which needed to be done. They raised a billion dollars. We moved to the ACC. She oversaw a lot of big important things.

you just said that diversity is a huge part of ranking success and now you're saying that we chose it even though we knew it would lower the ranking
That "ranking" was a typo. Should have just read success. Switched to tapatalk...still tring to figure out if I like better

I'll say it....for undergrads, Syracuse is nothing better than an average school outside of Newhouse. I'm sure those who graduated in the last 10 years can vouch for this.

The fact that they don't offer merit based scholarships may also play a role in not attracting the elite students.

the right way to get diversity is to spend time and money pouring resources into supporting minority communities on campus, and to dedicate full ride scholarships to TOP minority students. Make Syracuse a place where valedictorians from Brooklyn want to attend. Syracuse should be known as a place that is welcoming to minorities, provides extensive academic support to students coming out of bad schools but with very high potential, and where minority students go to end up with a GOOD JOB. Simply admitting kids, giving them C's without supporting their development, and then sending them off to represent the university in the work force IS STUPID. this destroys the value of my degree and I don't like it. There is a right way and a wrong way to build diversity. nancy chose the wrong way, or at least the way that only works if you are a public school. Because who the heck wants to pay private school tuition when you can just go to Rutgers or something and have a comparable outcome? With the job market the way it is it's becoming a tougher and tougher sell.

they do have merit scholarship - I got one when I was there. and there are other good undergrad programs ... writing, art, public policy, economics etc. But the focus needs to be on upping the ante not taking it down.

Pretty sure all those schools were slightly below SU, but could be wrong. May also have been a different ranking system. USC was definitely very low. All the California schools have jumped quite a bit.

When? BC and Miami were very much peers of SU when I was looking at schools in ancient times. I know because I got into all three, and for reasons inexplicable by any rational human being, I choose Syracuse, NY over Coral Gables, FL.

At this point, except for the reputation of Newhouse and Maxwell, what does a Syracuse education offer that other schools don't?
.
Hey, don't discredit the School of Architecture!

Somebody call US News and ask for a recount.

SU is listed as the top choice for B students...so we have that going for us.
lies I had B's and got deferred.

God damn you FM

Back in the day (my day), Miami was considered the warm weather party school that was a breeze to be admitted.

My Final 3 schools I got into were Northwestern, Syracuse, Miami. Miami(Fl) is a great academic school and it was always slightly higher than Syracuse overall, but I went with Newhouse over Medill and Miami. Syracuse should be in the 40s and the next chancellor I hope enrolls less students and gets the best academic students into SU it can.

This was probably 1994. I had like 3 books when I was looking. Still have them somewhere. I pretty much had a list of all the schools with sports and cross referenced them with academics.

Main reason I chose SU was because they had a very late admission deadline. I took a year off to work before going to school, and had to jump in the last minute. Otherwise I would be on the Michigan board. No regrets, though.

As mentioned previously in this thread if I was on BOT I would tell the next Chancellor to scale back spending as much as possible. I would let in 5% less students for a couple of years and become more selective and raise our academic profile.
Edit: I would also make Maxwell an undergraduate college as well. The Graduate department of Maxwell is on the level with the Kennedy School at Harvard. The Sen. Moynihan Fellowship is awesome for SU, We need the History/Poli Sci/Public Affairs/International Relations undergraduates getting the Maxwell brand to attract elite students.

I meant you personally. Are you in the media?

I interned at ESPN and have friends who work there, but I went to Law School after SU. I work as a lawyer in Charlotte, NC. I hope to run for a BOT spot eventually.

Found this:
Earliest year the provide a top 50 list is 1996. BC is 37th, USC 44th, Syracuse 49th. Can't find Miami.

Spending is investing.

I agree with Cantor's approach - the University has needed infrastructure spending for a long time.

We saw what the failure to invest did to our football program in the late 1990s.

Like I said, probably from a different ranking system.

US News tends to rank privates quite a bit higher, as any of the B10 homers on the Frank the Tank blog will let you know. Often.

Nice to see ESF at #86, ahead of a number of more well-known schools.
