Not sure if this has already been discussed as I have been on a hiatus lately, but man, after watching Popovich throughout the NBA Finals, I see another Boeheim character. I thought about this before but after tonight's press conference, I thought I was watching Coach B. The face mannerisms, disdain for stupid questions, refusal to do or say anything that most coaches would do or say, and just outright disinterest to be likeable. Popovich, like Boeheim, just don't care to please others as it seems as though they don't feel like they have any need. I'm a big supporter of Boeheim, not so much Popovich. However, during the series I have come to realize, especially after the press conference tonight, how similar these guys are in their outward character. If you haven't seen the press conference, watch it. Truly, the face mannerisms were so Boeheim like.

Crusty they are. Perhaps it is no accident that they are the longest tenured in their respective leagues, unusually consistent winners, loyal to their players even though they yell at them over the slighest mental lapse, and encourage players to keep shooting. They are excellant tacticians and judges of talent. Pops is ahead in the nickname dept but Beiheim is ahead by a nose. JB needs another NC, but odds are that he will get it.

I am a huge fan of both coaches. What makes these guys who they are is that they always find ways to win. Pop is the best coach in the NBA and one of the top 5 coaches of all time. He always makes the necessary adjustments to win. His system is almost completely flawless no matter who he puts in it. Huge, Huge fan of both. SPURS in 6!!

Think about the respect that Pop must have from his players. In the NBA, what other coaches can lay in to players like what he does? Most coaches have to put on kid gloves when handling players. This also speaks to the players Pop has on his team. The fact that Duncan takes it in stride must set the tone for other players on the team. Even though I'm not a big fan of the spurs, I sure do respect the team and what they have done over the years.

I believe they are friends - or at least friendly with each other. And I know there is mutual respect. I remember a few years back, Pop had Boeheim come to Texas to give a lesson in zone defense.

I felt there were some parallels betwen Jerry Sloan and Coach Boeheim too.

On a semi- side note there is some buzz that our own James Southerland will be taken by the Spurs in the first round I believe they have the 28th pick.

That would be perfect. Pop loves athletic 3 pt specialists. Not a better coach to learn under as a rookie in the NBA

I am always hoping for a Syracuse player to end up in San Antonio, but I don't think San Antonio would make such a pick. They are more likely to take a foreigner who they can stash overseas (and off the cap) with their first rounder. James is the kind of player you take in the second round - with no guaranteed contract attached - and hope he works out.

That being said, James' best case scenario is to find a team that wants someone to fill a Matt Bonner-like role.

James is widely considered the best shooter in the draft and definitely the best shooter 6'-8" shooter in the draft. Given the importance of shooting in these playoffs I will be surprised if he doesn't go first round and with Manu likely to retire cap space is not an issue with the spurs. But we will see

San Antonio is the best at getting the max out of role players. This would be a nice fit for Southerland.
