OT: FSU settling lawsuit...

$900k. thats a good chunk of change. must have been something to the suit.

i cannot read the article at work but wonder if separate suit going against winston individually or does the settlement extinguish all claims?

According to FSU: $950k... $250k to her, $700k to her lawyer. Her lawyer disputes that breakdown.

As expected, FSU claims that they settled in order to avoid the expense of a trial.

Im w you. This trial wouldnt cost $950k

I do think the split is wrong. Contingency fees typically are 1/3 plus expenses. That means the accuser likly got in $500-600k range.

Was a little unsure of this as well. Not sure how FSU settling covers Jameis individually, unless he is protected under a student clause in some way. Need an atty to weigh in.

Also, never understood how you can be cleared of something legally (not that he was) and then be charged civilly for damages. That always has baffled me.

I always wondered about that myself, but I suppose "beyond the shadow of a doubt" is a far cry from innocent.

This settlement doesn't cover JW individually - only FSU's liability.

There are two different standards for a criminal vs. a civil judgement - you must prove beyond a reasonable doubt for a criminal conviction (99.99% likelihood he did it).

For money damages, the burden of proof is only a preponderance of the evidence (51% likelihood he did it).

FSU settled as they didn't want Jimbo to take the stand to say what he knew and when he knew it. The feds are still dealing with the title IX investigating. FSU has admitted that Jimbo knew about this from the beginning and never reported this to the proper people.
