OT: Predict Rutgers 2015 conference record: Schedule Attached

So $40 mil will get you about where you need to be until stadium reno and practice facility are paid off. You guys kind of did the reverse of what we're currently doing as far as fundraising and building. I'm sure everyone involved will feel better once football is paying its own bills though.

Will be curious to see if SU and RU are even competing that often moving forward. I've never subscribed to the idea that both couldn't achieve some semblance of success at the same as I don't see NJ as must have recruiting grounds for us. As it stands now by the time both have facilities up and paid for, kids with offers from both will simply be choosing ACC vs B1G.

The Rutgers University athletic program isn’t just a public relations catastrophe; it’s also an economic disaster. Expenses ran ahead of revenues by $28 million in 2011-12. The cumulative shortfall since 2005 is $190 million.
...

In addition to fiscal fantasy, Rutgers has added a little creative accounting. Its report to the NCAA shows that the subsidy to athletics is $28 million: $18.5 million from discretionary university funds and another $9.5 million from student fees. None of these funds are earmarked for athletics — the university is free to spend those dollars on anything it wants, or even hand them back to students and their families as tuition reductions. All told, the subsidy amounts to almost $1,000 for each undergraduate. The student fees alone work out to almost $330 per undergraduate.

So, $190MM in the hole, borrowing $28MM from discretionary funding because the borrowing the Athletic Department already secured was insufficient. In reality, this mess is $218MM in the hole, losing $28MM annually (which will only go up due to inflation and due to a higher level of investment for the B1G). They will probably start out around $14-$15MM as a newbie and ramp up to a full share (currently $24MM, projected $40MM). Even with the Fantasy estimate of $40MM, it will take nearly 20 years to pay of the borrowed money. Longer if the payout is less. That does NOT factor in the necessary increases in spending for the new conference.

Obviously this was the right move for Rutgers, stop the bleeding and all. But the fact that they will not enjoy the fruits of the new conference for decades is telling. This really makes me believe that they will return to their historical position within the CFB ranks.

The math is not difficult and 40MM in 2017 is conservative. I've gone through this already. Just the new Tier 1 contract, the BTN payout, and the Rose Bowl should be right around 40MM. That doesn't account for the B1G Championship game, NCAA credits, Hoops contract with CBS, Playoff payouts, etc. This dope of a professor also intentionally ignores the increase in revenue generated by having a home slate in 2014 and 2015 consisting of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Michigan State, Maryland, Wisconsin and Indiana. Ya think that might add a few bucks into the coffers every other Saturday in the fall in the form of signage, concessions, tickets, parking, donations, etc?

This opinion piece written by an unapologetic basher of NCAA athletics is remarkably lazy and unscientific. It would have been a great article to write had we wound up in the AAC. All of that investment in facilities and stadium expansion/renovation for a chance to play Tulane and Houston week in and week out.

Using your $40MM you need to subtract the Big East payout and the $28MM per year deficit. When done, then start paying back the money borrowed from other university funds. Yeah, I see how Rutgers will be rolling in the dough. Even if you bump your number to $50MM you still will be two decades out befor breaking even. That does not include expenses necessary to bring Rutgers up to B1G standards.

Also, don't expext stadium expansions until sellouts are every game and Rutgers has paid back a good portion of the debt. New Jersey residents and students will be very upset.

Hint: You're GOB.

40MM - 9MM (Big East Payout) - 28MM (budget shortfall) = + 3MM

There is no mandate that Rutgers pay back money it used from other funds to support athletics. The vast majority of Universities run their AD's in the red. Rutgers will be one of the fortunate few that turn a profit, in about six years.

By the way, in that 40MM we have not added a dime for NCAA Playoff money, not a dime for the B1G Championship game, nothing for the CBS hoops contract, we assume basically no increase in the BTN payout, no increase in any game day revenue when replacing USF, Pitt, UConn and Syracuse with Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State, and nothing in the form of NCAA credits or rotating Orange Bowl revenue.

Yes- because Rutgers is so irrelevant that some have to continually sniff their jocks and remind them, again...how "irrelevant" they are.
The moronic, IMO, obsession with "all-things Rutgers" on this forum is a phenomenon that continues unabated, despite the fact we're not likely to see much of them moving forward. Some here never obsess this way about other programs, yet RU has touched a nerve that continues to irk.
Fine, I get it- they're not who they say they are, fake, phony, frauds, etc.
So, the question needs to be asked...why continue to talk about them, give their "fake, phony" program credence, lower our stellar tradition-rich program to their perpetual loser level, and obsess over RU like they're the 2nd Coming of Knute Rockne's ND?
Again, JMHO. :noidea:

You're forgetting to account for the money that will be siphoned off to cover some other Rutgers financial shortfalls. This is NJ we are talking about. The AD is going to keep 100% of the revenue? Doubtful.

28MM annual shortfall and an empty big east trophy case. Rutgers has been looking towards future success since the 1800s.

Come back when your athletic department is no longer a national embarrassment.

Some of us live in NJ and pay NJ taxes.

The fact that we are now discussing whether or not the Rutgers AD is going to be able to keep its profit, tells me that we are making some progress here.

why even argue with a butgirls grad?

its like arguing with a dog turd but smellier and not as good looking
