My wife is a Stony Brook grad and is ecstatic. Tonight's win was no fluke. SB looks to be very good.

I'm glad they're in, that coach has worked long and hard to get that program to this point.

Just read they had 7 players on their team drafted this year, including a first rounder. That team is no fluke.

They had a great stat during the first game, hopefully I am remembering it correctly. They said LSU averages over 10,000 in attendance per home baseball game. Stony didn't even get half of that for the whole season.

My friend went to the world series in Omaha a couple years back and he said the LSU fans were insane, but great fans. When the Stony Brook pitcher in the first game sat down after a great performance, they gave him a standing applause...great sportsmanship.

Two things stood out to me during this Super Regional. First is the fact that Stony Brook trailed for exactly one inning of the entire series and that was when LSU won game 1 in extra innings. Second is the class of the LSU fans giving high fives to the Stony Brook players as they made a victory lap around the field. Most wins in the country this season. I think I heard the last time a team "seeded" as low as Stony Brook made the CWS was in 2008 when Fresno St ended up winning the whole thing. The have a realistic shot at it imo.

Interesting campus. Had a very beach feel to it, due to the soil, plants, etc. My son the swimmer had an offer to go there. (No scholarships for swimming) but it was ultimately too big for his tastes. I was very impressed with the academic support system as well. Very good impression overall.

I watched most of the game last night. SB looks very solid and not like a fluke. The announcers calling the game said that the SB coaches and players were blown away by the hospitality the entire weekend from the LSU fans and program. The SB players and coaches were rock solid and never buckled at all even when a few calls seemed to go against them.

I just don't think SU could compete regularly in baseball. I would much rather see SU bring back wrestling, a sport it could be VERY good at, and men's hockey. While I'm not hockey fan, SU is a natural for the sport.

Stony Brook has the top ERA in the country entering the NCAA tournament.

Fresno St made the run a few years ago, and Stony Brook looks to have a similar type team. However, Stony Brook had to battle back in both the Regionals and Supers, will be tough to do that in the CWS although not impossible.

They remind me of '08 Fresno St and '06 Oregon State teams. Very big underdogs, but anything is possible in the CWS.

As for the quote on the coach working long and hard to get them to this point, I think this point is well beyond what the coach ever thought was realistic. It's great to see NY and the NE break (Stony and Kent St, even though kent st. is in Ohio and St John's wasn't too far off from Arizona) into the baseball scene always dominated by the West and South. I think the year round facilities in the NE are starting to pay off.

The kids who are coming through now in the Northeast have benefited from the sprouting of tons of travel baseball teams in the area, especially in Long Island and New Jersey. Some of these travel teams, including a few in the CNY area have done extremely well in national tournaments. In addition, facilities like Baseball Heaven (Long Island) and Diamond Nation (New Jersey) have helped tremendously.

I think the year round facilities in the NE are starting to pay off.

Stony Brook baseball coach is about to be interviewed on the Tim Brando Show.
You should be able to find the show on Yahoo Sports Radio and on CBS Sports Network (TV).

How did SBU have to battle back? The only time they trailed in any game was when they lost the first LSU game in extra innings? They hammered Miami and LSU the other two games.

Stony Brook lost to UCF (who some thought were favorites to win Coral Gables Regional) and thus had to win 3 games in 2 days (not easy to do on a short staff). In the Supers, Stony dropped a heartbreaker in Game 1 and then had to win the next 2 at Alex Box stadium, not very easy to do.

Au contraire! In the Coral Gables losers bracket, Stony Brook trailed both Missouri State and Central Fla by five runs in elimination games. They battled back to win those games to reach the finals where they beat Central Fla again to advance to Baton Rouge. I would also consider them battling back after losing the first game to LSU in 12 innings. In that 12 inning game, LSU hit solo home runs in the bottom of the 9th, 10th, and 11th innings to tie and extend the game. Then the game is suspended by rain after 11 innings to the next morning where they quickly lost in the 12th inning. Furthermore, an hour after losing the 12 inning game, they then faced and beat the 4th pick (1st pitcher) taken in the MLB draft. all in front of 11K+ fans. I would say they had guts and battled back.
