Painting himself into a corner. Marrone interviewing for Jacksonville O.C. job

i think he just tried something new, and it backfired.

no winkwink deal. no gentlemens agreement.

just a guy with an ability to make 4million without coaching, by leaving a job that historically everyone has gotten fired at...and he could do it without success or failure, thinking he could get another job easily.

just like fishing when you dont catch anything.

did you fish? yep.

what you catch? nothing, but i fished.

did you coach? yep.

what you win? nothing. but i coached...and now, id like you to hire me.

Wherever Dougie goes...that's his dream job.

For all the talk about Syracuse football and what needs to happen to be competitive again, it would make sense to have a former HC be successful in the NFL...but maybe people (not just here) would rather see Marrone fail. Personally I don't get it, but it's a lot like the stuff said about Ennis/Grant on the hoops board.

Or the people that insist on calling him "Dougie" like a 13 year old? Oh wait, there's one now. ^^^

I don't want to see any human fail at anything. Im just saying i don't understand his mindset.

Must be more to the story. He could have stayed at Buffalo, knowing he'd get canned in a year, and just show some progress. Then he'd look better for the next head coach search. Never a good idea to leave a job before you have a job, and I'd think Doug knows that.

...for the offensive coordinator job, per the Axeman.

I won't say it. I promise.

Everyone knows your hatred towards Marrone, but enough already. You sound like a child hiding behind his big brothers.

Doug had a pretty good opportunity to leave the employer that he hated and jump to the same job at a rival. I'd imagine a lot of people that hate their jobs would do the same thing but it's also a good reminder not to make big decisions out of spite. I'm guessing that his move to coach in the AFC South (Houston or Jacksonville) is a strategic step towards getting the Titans job next Winter. His wife is from Nashville and Ken Wisenhunt is such a disaster that it's pretty much a guarantee that the job will be available.

I understand there is a lot of hate on this site for Marrone…I am not a huge fan, but to criticize him for executing a clause in his contract to walk away, I just don't get it. There is no question that he is a huge winner in this deal, even if he doesn't get another head coaching deal this year. Every coach out there would love to have a "Marrone Clause" added to their deal. He was a lame duck and it was clear the new owner wanted to hire his own man. The only way his future bargaining position would have been better than it is right now is if he went 14-2 next year and went to the Super Bowl…and how likely was that?

I don't see why we need to have a successful nfl coach who used to coach here to be competetive. Even if Marrone won the SB it wouldn't materially help this program. Now players who make the NFL and succeed are critical to the program. I hope our staff is telling every d lineman on our board to watch the Colts and Pats and pay attention to the Jones brothers.

As to your second point no one wants to see Marrone fail. Most just think he is a below average coach with poor people skills and a big ego and thin skin. I'm a Bills fan for life I was hoping he would get to the playoffs. But he gave us the most boring offense I have seen in a while and he showed the same limitations he did at Syracuse proving he doesn't learn from his mistakes. I was ok with him staying but he made his own bed, so goodbye. I never want his brand of boring football near a team I care about again. I think he deserves everything that happens to him professionally.

Im baffled that Marrone left Buffalo without another job in hand. Did someone whisper in his ear and tell him another job was 100% his and then it fell through? He can't be THAT dumb.

My guess is he simply didn't feel comfortable working for new ownership and a front office that didn't like him, and didn't feel comfortable with the fact that he was hired for a 3 year plan that they then told him he couldn't carry out after year 1.

He saw an opportunity to continue to get paid like a head coach while being in a happier environment with a better opportunity to get another head coaching job later and took it. I honestly think it was a smart decision on his part. I really doubt he's sweating the fact that he's going to get paid more than almost any NFL coach without even having a head coaching job.

Why do so many say he was out of Buffalo after next year? Why a lame duck? Maybe he was out if they didn't make the playoffs, but why gamble on the negative? Did he and his fans just assume the team would go backwards?

If he does a good job - he'll be hearing from a lot of teams. NFL owners love coaching retreads.

That's an interesting angle.

Who is criticizing him for executing the opt out. Most Bills fans areally psyched at the way things ended up. I do think Marrone showed his true colors by opting out and I think his master plan failed. How do you think Hackett feels after giving up a stable position here to follow Marrone?

If you're a terrorist you are the epitome of a human fail... so a failure, failing = double negative = a positive

Yes, such an offensive name. I appologize to anyone out there that may actually be named Dougie. If I offended any of you I am truly sorry.
You do realize that Dougie was his nickname while he was still here right? Is it o.k. to still refer to Gerry as G-Mac, or now that he no longer plays is that offensive? What about Carmello Anthony? Will you be upset if I refer to him as Mello? I hope Mike Gbinije doesn't get to used to the whole "Silent G" nickname. I mean, he is leaving after next year.

Thank you for speaking for everyone. I don't hate anyone though. Am I a big Marone fan? No. Forgive me for allowing myself to be critical of a former head coach. It's not as if I'm cheering as he has become broke and is living out of a dumpster. The man is getting 4 mil next year, plus whatever money he'll earn as an o.c. or wherever he ends up. I don't think a little ribbing is going to break the man.
So freeking serious some of you. Jeesh. Maybe all this cold weather has got you uptight. Relax, it's going to be a balmy 22 degrees tomorrow.

Well since Hackett gave up his stable position here because he wasn't named HC, I don't know how he would be that upset. Did he pass on any other NFL OC jobs to go to Buffalo?

Good move. He'll be "head coaching in waiting" if/when the HC Jacksonville gets canned. He'd be the logical successor: HC experience. Turnaround specialist. Would have a year in the program and ownership is cheap.

It's a win/win for Marrone. If Jacksonville by some miracle gets to 9 or 10 wins next season, he'll be a hot commodity under any scenario that would get them there. Then Marrone gets his HC jobs somewhere else (St. Doug resurrects Bortles from the football dead, etc etc.) If they are terrible, he's the new HC.

Jacksonville is the NFL equivalent of Siberia. He'll be out of the media spotlight completely. Minimal unruly fans or press.

Is it as good as getting a shiny new HC job now? No. But it's a shrewd play. Sell the present/Buy the future.
