Paul Pasqualoni expected to return for a 49th season in football with new job at Florida

I love Coach Mac but I consider Coach P the second best coach in program history after Ben.

Without Paul and George Mac goes the way of his predecessor

That’s why Jake made the decision he made. Best stretch of sustained quality In this program’s history is directly attributable to Pasqualoni The way that he was summarily dismissed by those nonentities crushed this program

Yep
3x ECAC Coach of the Year and an over .600 All Time winning percentage (even with storz stats)

its just a matter of time.

and maybe a nice nudge from the folks up in 315...

Is this a debate? Paul is the second best coach in Syracuse history. Had Gedney made it to the end zone in 92 do they finish #2 or #3 that year?

i wish the younger people here could have experienced Syracuse football when we were the cool team in college football w NFL talent everywhere.

Sure there's debate. Those '91 and '92 teams were built by Mac. P certainly has a strong case but so does Mac.

ok so let’s do the same thing for dinos 10 win season. Shafer doesn’t get that benefit of the doubt. A coach coaches the team.

Paul is the second best ever. To me once a coach gets to 4 bcs esque games he can lay claim to be better than P.

Paul was at the helm of the sinking ship of SU FB. As much credit as he gets for the successes, he deserve the same for the demise. There were certainly facility factors out of his control, but he had lost control of the team. Guys in the team at the end were actively de-recruiting prospects when they were on campus.
The last bowl game was a debacle. There was a 100 page playbook and ZERO offensive adjustments were made at halftime. The kids were just screamed at about lack of effort. No acknowledgement that there were game plan problems.
I regularly had some players at my house over a 5 year period, including Paul's last 2-3. The program and team were in a death spiral.
It was time for Paul to go. He just wouldn't/couldn't adjust his schemes, and he was really unable to recruit at a high level.
All of that said, I think that had he landed Michael Vick, he wins a NC and the program and Paul's history, are different.

Don't disagree at all with any of it. Things were trending down. That's usually what happens when the expectations were BCS games (which ironically was set by the guy who set the trend downward as well). Victim of success 101.

My contentions are A) he's the second best coach ever regardless to how it ended (spoiler: it always ends bad for coaches who are fired) and B) he was fired at the worst possible juncture, at the worst possible time, with the worst possible rebuild plan.

Having said all of it (and i've said it in other threads), the school should do cartwheels to welcome him back into the family. For a guy who never had off field issues, was a consummate professional and represented Syracuse in a gentlemanly way, he's treated like a pariah by the fans and the school. I find it...odd. Like someone said, he's not interested in any acknowledgements at this point and i can't blame him. Unfortunately it will be a situation when he dies that people suddenly respect him for the work he did on the Hill (unmatched essentially)

Huh? Dino's 10 win team was three years removed from Shafer, was filled with many of his guys, and ran completely different offensive and defensive systems. The '91-'92 teams were loaded with the same players as the '90 team that was Mac's last and ran the same offense and defense. Many of the starters in '92 had been starters since '90. That was a young team that matured those next two years.

Don't try to make this look like I was insulting P. I said both have a strong case. To me, a successful rebuilding job and an undefeated season make a very strong case.

I'm trying to illustrate that Shafer had recruited guys in that Dino team. i'm a huge Dino guy and he coached them up. Dino doesn't win 10 games without Dungey that year, who was brought in by Scott. That should be commended but Dino unlocked the ultimate potential in Dungey that year.

Paul inherited a loaded Syracuse era from Mac and made the putt for the first 3 years with aplomb. I won't hold it against him. He also reloaded with the McNabb era and built that into a 2x BCS team. That should be commended for having never happened in modern times at Syracuse.

I just think we tend to lionize Mac b/c he left at the perfectly right time for legacy building. If Paul had taken the Penn State job in March of 1999 we would probably have built a statue already.

Coach P's SU career is like the finale of The Sopranos, it will be debated forever, with some people saying it was brilliant, and others saying it was disappointing.

Good analogy.

If the roles where reversed and P inherited what Mac did, do you think the SU program rises up in the mid 80’s and starts it’s run of good football? I am thankful for P and everything he did while at SU but he clearly benefited from the program Mac built. P’s two best season where the first two after taking over Mac’s loaded roster. Also I will never understand how we didn’t have better seasons during the McNabb years when we were loaded with NFL talent in a watered down Big East. So many what the heck loses that derailed seasons every year.
