Paul Pasqualoni expected to return for a 49th season in football with new job at Florida

A lot of that building under Mac was done by P.
Sure, P was a part of it. Let's keep in mind though that P wasn't even a coordinator under Mac. He was a position coach. There were a lot of coaches that helped build those teams. So, what's your point? Are you saying Mac should recieve no credit? I've made it clear I think they deserve to share the credit.

I'm always amazed that Mac ended his career immediately after the Patriots. He was 62 when he retired which wasn't THAT old. If he had switched with Ron Meyer in the early 80s (with the Patriots) I feel like Mac could have had a Pete Carroll like career.

Does anyone recall if Syracuse tried to retain him. At the time was the money that much more with the ever cheap Patriots or was it a case of Mac wanting to return closer to home to finish his career? Feels like he pulled the rip cord on a program ascending to go to the worst professional sports team at the time. I can safely say this because i spent weekends wondering why I was spending weekends going to Sullivan Stadium for games (Most of them were blacked out on tv b/c they couldn't sell out).

A true sliding door scenario if Mac stayed another year with Syracuse. Perhaps P leaves for another job (maybe he takes the UConn job while they are trying to move to D1?).

Mac missed the last 8 games in 1992 with the Pats due to an illness. Probably the reason why he retired.

Another sliding door scenario .. what if Jake promotes HCRE instead of Coach P?

I was fairly young when that happened. I was just beginning to understand the game and that 1990 season was the first that I followed closely. I don't know if SU tried to retain him. My guess is he had his mind made up since he was given the chance to coach on the pro level for the team that represented the region he was from. It was probably a dream that he thought he had to take a shot at when the opportunity presented itself. It was probably a pretty good upgrade in pay too. College coaches were making, what, about 1/10 they do now?

It's hard to know what P may have done. He had experience as a coordinator and HC at a small school level but only as a position coach at D1. Maybe he looks for his chance to be a DC somewhere else or waits for the opportunity at SU as he keeps trying to climb the ladder. Looking back, it's kinda remarkable he got the SU HC job. You probably won't see someone with the resume he had get a shot at a major HC job today. Could you imagine if Dino had that resume when he was hired?

My point is exactly what my statement says. P played a part in the success of those teams.

I think both coaches were the right coaches at the right time. Mac came in when the program needed a boost of adrenaline. A guy who could fire things up. A guy who had a big personality and could turn the program around. An emotional guy. P stepped into the HC role when we needed a guy who could keep the train rolling, a disciplinarian, a little more coach, a little less emotion. Both did their jobs well.

I have nothing but respect and admiration for what Coach Mac accomplished here. He is probably my favorite SU coach. But sometimes it’s more difficult to sustain something than it is to rebuild something. I think P did a great job here. He deserves equal respect.

when P finally gets his due at SU and then the College HOF, i have a long list of 'fans' who can go to rutgers to watch them play storz those days.

What is getting his due to you? Feted as a national champion level coach even though he habitually wasn't? Or regarded as a very good coach who did very good and occasionally great things here at SU but who, eventually, fell off and was replaced (badly, I'll be the first to concede) when it was his time? Give him a day. Put his name on a ring of honor. I am 100% on board with that. He deserves it. But let's be realistic.

why would any school treat a non championship winning coach like he won a NC?

i really dont care, keep shliting on the 2nd best coach in school history, 3rd at worst.

so you are saying no school or team should honor anyone, unless they won a NC or a title??

one can always find reason that nobody should have their # retired and name in a Ring of Honor.

its just odd to see it be so strong in the so called fan base.

guess he did you wrong some how.

sorry.

ill buy your ticket for rutty-storz.

fwiw: i suppose 1st the football historians really need to get on some type of honor system too. other than 44, have they even honored Ben someway? I cant remember.

There's statue of him at the Ensley Complex.

You'd know that if you ever ventured north of 161st St.

im heading north of it today, i just have a hard time making a left...

something should be in the Dome, where 50k (ha!) can see his name and/or something like that.

I'm going to make this point again. Before 87 Mac was 30-36. Paul joined the team for the '87 season and George was made OC.

The rest is history and it's no coincidence. Evidence - Paul got the HC job. And watch any game in that time period, Paul is not acting as a position coach on the sideline.

I respect your passion for the guy. I am ok respectfully agreeing to disagree.

Does anyone else read through these threads and know the points and counter points cold yet enjoy them every time?

Part of me thinks that Dino could rip off 3 straight 10 win seasons and we would have threads pop up talking about what a mistake it was to hire Greg Robinson/fire p at halftime/not invest in the program/darryl gross/ etc. etc. etc.

I am not sure if it is sad that I get such enjoyment from this topic or if I need to quote "get a life"

It is always a good idea to “Get a life!”
Even if SU is undefeated.

Cool. So you responded to echo what I already said. Thank you.
