Fran is 42. Dude has been a NCAA Head coach for all of 17 games.

He's no fool either. When we lost to Stanford and Pitt and BC he was just a mediocre coach last year. After Tenn and UConn OT again mediocre.

After Miami best coach in college, After Clemson best coach in college. Next week who knows.

Too many of these SEC teams are like a dog chasing a car. They see the car drive by and they want it when they see it. But If they caught the car they wouldn't know what to do with it.

Agreed, who knows but anyone hanging their hat on what Fran said in his opening presser when he was hired, that seems a bit crazy. I think many coaches who take this job may believe they can turn it around, and get the money coming in that it will take to be competitive at a high level but I am not so sure that is 100% accurate or even attainable. I know there has been some frustration already for Fran as there was for Marrone after a couple years. We shall see

Fran wants to see SU embrace big time football.

Sell out games, go to the pre game walk, stay until the whistle

Should get the weekly downtown pep rally/fan party going again.

Boeheim also felt he got plenty of money. He was not greedy. But in some ways that was harmful to the program because we got used to success with not that much expenditure.

Fran also doesn’t seem to care that much about money. I think he cares about being a mentor, coaching kids, being a positive to the community, embracing values of connection and - yes, I’ll say it - love. In terms of ego, I think he would very much like being the face of Syracuse football and becoming a legend.

You can’t do all those things hopping from one program to the next in pursuit of the bigger contract, IMO. Yes, he needs to be paid more. But I believe he would like to stay. I hope I’m right.

I didn’t see or read his message, but I would assume the spirit of one of his messages essentially was:

“Teams with deeper pockets, better program infrastructure, and better recruiting territory/ pipelines are probably going to throw lots and lots of money at Fran. He likes it at Cuse, but he is only human.

Syracuse will never be able to compete with the outrageous NIL pools of the big boys, and there is no contract buyout big enough to deter them from going after Fran if they deem he is their guy.

There is no such thing as locking him up. If Fran continues on his current trajectory, this will be a yearly problem for us (and a yearly option for Fran).

So enjoy him while he’s here (which hopefully is a long time).”

He's also extremely ambitious (which of course he is). And I do think his ambitions can be realized here.

I hope he's here a long, long time. But what is said in public, and what is said in private, isn't always the same.

The easier path to the playoffs is ACC or Big 12. In the SEC and Big10 there are realistically just the same handful of teams in each that will survive a season.

Whatever happens, if Fran gets an offer he can't refuse that doesn't make him a bad person. Very few, if any, of us have ever had to turn down the kind of offers Fran is expected to see. I wont blame him if he can't. But I believe him when he says he'll be here a while.

UF will fire Napier in 2-3 weeks, likely after TAMU (Oct. 12).
UF will eventually interview Jon Gruden.
UF will ultimate;y offer the job to Lane Kiffin and he is likely to take it.
I'd place the odds of the UF hire: Kiffin 80%, Gruden 10%, Eli Drink 6%, Other 3%, Fran 1%.

The Gators job is not a job that Fran should aspire for.
You have to win there, of course, but you need to do so while scoring 40+ points per game.
This is a fan base that is used to Spurrier and Urban and pines for those days of aestheticly-pleasing dominance. They'd legitimately rather lose 42-39 than win 17-14.

Fran doesn't need that muck. It doesn't fit his brand.

The problem for us is that with our stadium being so small, even if retaining him meant selling out every game, that probably adds only about an extra $3-4 million or so of additional revenue. So that’s about all we could squeeze out of paying him $3 million more (which probably puts us in a competitive place).

But I’m sure Wildhack understands keeping Syracuse in a high national profile is worth a lot more to the university that just the bottom line of the football program. The difficulty of getting accepted in to Clemson skyrocketed with their football success with all the new applicants. as a school that could benefit from that too, that is an immeasurable value. I would hope the chancellor and Board of trustees feel the same way.

Also the value of Syracuse power four status in the future hinges on continued success. Look at how people perceive Wake Forest now compared with five years ago.

We are also one of the few 30 or so programs that actually makes money on their athletic department to begin with, so even if you can’t justify it with ticket sales, you could just justify it with the fact that we have money other people don’t. A school like Rutgers gets 20 million more on their TV contract but still loses 80- 100 million a year. So who has more money?

Absolutely true. But part of the point of my post is that I don’t perceive Fran as a guy who would rather sit home and get paid vs doing what he loves. Most coaches, Fran included, usually understand that failing at an SEC team means your next stop is a G5 position. No one is knocking on Jimbo Fisher‘s door, and Dan Mullen coaches UNLV.

When Fran says all he has is his word, I believe. His sincerity is part of his success and I truly believe him. But I don't know if I could turn down $8m with $40m guaranteed.

All dabo needs to do is hire a Fran type coach, younger relatable etc to the young kids they’re all recruiting, like Fran did for Kirby, start to embrace the portal too, question is can you teach the old dog new tricks to do it.
