Pena unsportsmanlike penalty

Fwiw when they showed it was the correct call I think. Although, love having a coach that actually gets mad about the refs… rather than just literally no emotion ever.

I think if he had just lined up normally there's no flag.

But who knows, refs are unpredictable and the rule book mystifies me, and when they apply the rules is even more confounding.

that ref was a like a cop. Eyeballing Pena the whole time just itching to throw the flag.

According to Kyle McCord they put it in their playbook when it was successfully used in I think he said the Kentucky - Mississippi game. Kyle said it was legal in that game but penalized as illegal deception in our game. He just shrugged it off saying it’s just football - you never know. I’m talking about the TD play that was nullified because it was a deceptive substitution or something like that.

Also at halftime interview Fran mentioned the Jimbo Fisher era Texas A&M used it too. He said "I guess it was OK for Jimbo but not for Fran".

Agreed. In the moment I thought we got screwed but after watching the replay I think it’s within the spirit of the game for that to be a penalty.

It needs to be called consistently though not be ok for some games, some teams and not others.

You’ll be waiting a long time expecting college refs to call anything consistently.

It was worth a shot. I’d try it again someday but a little less blatant. It can still work.

Its hard enough for them to make calls. You cant add on these types of deception plays onto it. Good attempt though

I don't get how it was bush or sneaky or whatever he never left the field. The offense is supposed to make sure the D covers our guys?

Is a real rule but a nonsense call.

Think about other things deemed "unsportsmanlike," it's a high standard to meet and punishes stuff that sets the game back. Point of the rule is to keep someone from, say, faking an injury and then popping back up right before the snap, or starting a set with 13 players and then either pulling 2 WRs or a FB and a TE depending on how the defense lines up, etc.

It's been famously called on Quarterbacks that have trotted "confused" toward the sideline after the play is set, only to reveal they're actually a receiver and the RB passes it to them. It's not fair to expect a defense to cover a QB who is clearly getting pulled or chatting with his coach about a playcall. But Pena was a receiver that moved to a different location, still a receiver. That's...normal.

It happened right in front of me, and we were all pretty confused and thought maybe the flag was for offsides. I'll guess the ref either thought Trebor was a QB, or was making up their own version of the rule. I'd really like to see a replay though, I can't seem to find the game on the ESPN app.

Pena ran to within 1 yard of the sideline and was talking to HCFB right up until just after the snap. He might as well have been standing on the sideline.

I'm not sure "bush" is the word I'd use but I don't like using that kind of trickery.

Again, to me the most ridiculous thing is them trying this after they already had this penalty called in their favor this year. You shouldn’t then say you had no idea about it.

Nice pull. Pretty much identical. The UNLV kid actually got into his stance which our DB saw while the replay in today’s game showed Peña facing the sideline.

I agreed with the call and the rule. I’m all for creativity on offense, but this form of deception is worth keeping out of the game.

When a guy runs that close to the sideline, he’s running off the field. This is why I also hate when they call 12 men on the field because a player is sprinting off and doesn’t quite make it. Its not affecting the play at all.
