Pena unsportsmanlike penalty

I would expect that type play in high school or lower level, not D1.

We didn’t need to do it and as others have said we are above it.

Now talk about bad officiating go watch the 2nd Bama penalty that was called back Saturday night which was yet another bad call by top tier NCAA officials.

I disagree with this rule so much. It's not like Pena snuck onto the field. UConn just wasn't paying attention. That's on them. And you can argue that Fran didn't use the substitution as a deceiving move rather than he faked talking to his player and his player wasn't ready. Kinda like when a QB walks to sideline and ball gets direct snapped to the RB in backfield.

College football has much more important matters they should be worried about. Like players faking injuries to get an advantage. And not worry about teams outsmarting teams not paying attention.

Since the beginning of sports teams have always tried to " Fool " and outsmart the other team.
Baseball , pretending to throw the ball back to the pitcher than tagging the runner.
Not sure why it was illegal. Plays like yesterday have been used forever in football.

So, if he ran to near the sideline and had faced downfield, it would have been legal?
In a Vanderbilt game this season, they ruled a similar deception play was a penalty because the Vandy receiver did not have his hips square to the line of scrimmage at the snap

The espn announcer literally said the same thing. “The offense coordinators job is to have the offense fool and confuse the defense, that’s literally their job”

Something along those lines

Agree or disagree but I think lined up correctly or pretending to talk to the coach is where I'd draw the line. On a spectrum of plays, to me this was closer to the "fake QB slide and keep running" end of the spectrum in my book.

My read on the play : I think that if Pena was looking upfield like he would usually be, and if Brown didn't give him a verbal "go", it wouldnt have been flagged.

Its just a dumb rule,

don't let players line up outside the numbers.

But they do so why does it matter how they go there.

It should only be an issue if the player subs off the field into that spot. Not that the go out wide.

Cant players count to 11?

It's too much to ask. Defensive players have too much other stuff to worry about to constantly be checking where everyone in the offense is, coming and going, and adjust to it before the snap.

Perhaps they can come up with a different rule that people would like better.
