Pena unsportsmanlike penalty

I would expect that type play in high school or lower level, not D1.

We didn’t need to do it and as others have said we are above it.

Now talk about bad officiating go watch the 2nd Bama penalty that was called back Saturday night which was yet another bad call by top tier NCAA officials.

I disagree with this rule so much. It's not like Pena snuck onto the field. UConn just wasn't paying attention. That's on them. And you can argue that Fran didn't use the substitution as a deceiving move rather than he faked talking to his player and his player wasn't ready. Kinda like when a QB walks to sideline and ball gets direct snapped to the RB in backfield.

College football has much more important matters they should be worried about. Like players faking injuries to get an advantage. And not worry about teams outsmarting teams not paying attention.

Since the beginning of sports teams have always tried to " Fool " and outsmart the other team.
Baseball , pretending to throw the ball back to the pitcher than tagging the runner.
Not sure why it was illegal. Plays like yesterday have been used forever in football.

So, if he ran to near the sideline and had faced downfield, it would have been legal?
In a Vanderbilt game this season, they ruled a similar deception play was a penalty because the Vandy receiver did not have his hips square to the line of scrimmage at the snap

The espn announcer literally said the same thing. “The offense coordinators job is to have the offense fool and confuse the defense, that’s literally their job”

Something along those lines

Agree or disagree but I think lined up correctly or pretending to talk to the coach is where I'd draw the line. On a spectrum of plays, to me this was closer to the "fake QB slide and keep running" end of the spectrum in my book.

Its just a dumb rule,

don't let players line up outside the numbers.

But they do so why does it matter how they go there.

It should only be an issue if the player subs off the field into that spot. Not that the go out wide.

Cant players count to 11?

It's too much to ask. Defensive players have too much other stuff to worry about to constantly be checking where everyone in the offense is, coming and going, and adjust to it before the snap.

Perhaps they can come up with a different rule that people would like better.

Someone should start a thread about all the odd ball calls this season, there have been about 5 so far, including the Cal player who stepped OOB before he picked up the in bounds ball on the kickoff, and blocking on the on sides kick; can't remember the others. Two more games to go, who knows what we will see next.

Just watched the replay and it was about what I saw live from my seat at the 43. Trebor ran over and was chatting with his coach. While we can all surmise why, as far as the defense knows, he may have forgot the route or had a question on matchups. There was nobody else lined up like they were going to out there, there were 11 men on the field, and as far as I can tell it was the same receiver lineup as the previous play (Allen/Gadsden/Meeks/Pena/Gill). The UConn corner didn't have to leave his man, the Mike could've caught that they had 11 people covering 10, etc.

Anyway, here is the rule they called (9-2-2b)

No simulated replacements or substitutions may be used to confuse opponents. No tactic associated with substitutes or the substitution process may be used to confuse opponents (Rule 3-5-2e). This includes any hideout tactic with or without substitution.

Here is the closest approved ruling on it (9-2-2 III)

Approved Ruling 9-2-2 III. A1 leaves the field of play during a down. Team A huddles with 10 players. Substitute A12 enters, and A2 simulates leaving the field but sets near the sideline for a “hide-out’’ pass. RULING: Penalty—15 yards from the previous spot. This is a simulated replacement of a player to confuse opponents.

IOW, ref's position would entirely defensible if they had swapped and huddled 10 before the swap.

Don't get me wrong the play was pretty clearly deceptive and they were pushing on 'hideout', but if that's a 15 yd penalty I think they might as well flag fake punts or QB draws as well.

I think I remember that or at least remember a play where the announcer was explaining that unless a receiver is in motion that they must have their hips square to line of scrimmage
