This is our national ranking in penalties per game since Dino took over.

2023: 117 (out of 130)
2022: 131 (out of 131)
2021: 71 (out of 130)
2020: 103 (out of 128)
2019: 129 (out of 130)
2018: 111 (out of 130)
2017: 84 (out of 130)
2016: 124 (out of 128)

This is a major problem, and could very well be costing us a win or two each season. In our two "good" years, we were still below average. In seven out of the nine years, we were absolutely horrendous. In 1/3rd of Dino's seasons, we were in the bottom five teams nationally in most penalized.

What on Earth goes on at our practices?

Too much Santana?

WE BEAT BAMA !

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Last season, Alabama was 123rd of 131 teams in penalties, averaging 68.7 yards and 7.9 penalties per game. The Crimson Tide had some costly penalties, particularly in its losses.

second point being not all penalties are created equal. there are penalties and then there are costly penalties. distance and damage often being measured in time , down and circumstance.

Dino is like that one substitute teacher in elementary school that you loved having because they couldn't control the classroom and you could switch names with your friends during attendance.

I got college credit for a class where the teacher let us copy the answers from her book

The game is becoming unwatchable. We do something stupid and just about every opponent 3rd and long. Something needs to happen.
Marlowe Wax bumping Klubnik out of bounds (which obviously wasn't a big deal but why even give the ref the slightest opportunity to make that call on 3rd and long) is a microcosm of our lack of discipline.

This is his second one like that this year. Last week reached his hand into the facemask of the player he tackled to mush his face after the play. Cost us 15. He did something very similar last year too, I think in the bowl game. Another 15 yarder.
He's talented, but if this is the team captain...that tells you all you need to know about where Dino values discipline.

One million percent. Supposed leader right there acting like a child. Unacceptable absolutely unacceptable
helmet launch to our QB's head...no problemo . chest bump 15 yds automatic first. ok that's reasonable.
late hit rule is supposed to protect defenseless players. not reward flop artists. no career ever ended after a chest bump. unsportsmanlike call ok. otherwise play on.

I agree those couple plays were questionable, but the underlying point is 9 years 100+ games of data that shows a very consistent trend.

Yeah similar to that game where Taj Harris flipped off the camera while his captain watched sitting next to him. Not all captains are created equal.

Honestly the penalties are getting exhausting.

It’s literally every single week

And today, I think you can argue, cost us ever really getting into this game
Eh… game turned on Shraders fumble. Just knew it wasn’t our day.

Best year was 1-11 year, interesting

And yet if he doesn’t press , Klubnik will run the sideline or throw it. Honestly unless it’s completely obvious there is an unnecessarily hard hit , refs should be told not to throw that flag. Asking a defender in hot pursuit who may be making a play thinking the QB may throw it or run the side line, to suddenly stop his momentum when the QB goes out is just impossible at that level in my opinion.

Over the past three head coaches, we have only had one season in the top 50 in penalties and we fired that guy right away!
I have a feeling penalties have a lot more to do with talent level, venue and competition than coaching. ( For example, last year Alabama was 123 and Tennessee 124.)

There are so many variables that I am not sure there is a simple explanation. Certainly, some programs such as the service academies do a consistently good job but that probably has more to do with culture than coaching.

When players can't handle their assignments they hold, grab face masks and put hands to the face. A lot of PI as well.

Other penalties have more to do with venue (we should know that more than anyone).
USC, (excess celebration), happen to every team.

I would like to think that 40 from Shafwr year one was after effects of Marrone’s discipline still being instilled in the kids. Ever then that it's been a complete show with the penalites
