For once I can add something to the football side!

Anyway, this guy coached at my high school (Monmouth Regional) my senior year. Really, really good guy. I know it's only high school, but he lead our team to just about the only winning season I can remember. Also, I know my friends that played for him loved him.

He also happened to be my gym teacher.

Well, back in high school I used to be really into film and making movies. Somehow one of the movies I made for a school history project made its way into the hands of Coach Acosta. Being that he was my gym teacher, he pulls me aside one day during class and asks me if I can film each game and make highlight films for certain players who were fringe collegiate players. Of course, I obliged.

Little did I know he would have me ride the team bus with my camera to games and have me film practices so he could show players what they were doing wrong.

VERY, VERY positive and easy going guy. He used to give some really bad ass, movie-worthy, pre and post game speeches. He was also really big into fitness and nutrition. Always getting on guys about their workouts.

I think he is a great hire for this team, especially having such entrenched New Jersey roots. Just don't expect him to stick around too long. He always used to tell us that he would be a collegiate head coach one day.

This guy does not mess around. He fully meant collegiate coach at a Big Time D1 school.
How strong are his NJ connections, though? Its one thing getting D3 talent, but can he get us D1 talent?

Most college coaches have the ambition to be a Head Coach at a major university. So that doesnt surprise me. He needs to prove that he can coordinate a offense at a major college before he gets looks as a head coach. Your story just raises my comfort level with him. Ive been excited since day one of hearing of him joining the staff.

Great story.

This is a concern of mine as well.

I hope the guys works out, but I would rather a guy with a FBS (pref. BCS) resume.

I mean... what?

It doesn't matter what level he coached at--the question is, does he have relationships in that area or not? I'd venture to guess that high school teams are producing way more DIII, DII and DIAA players than they are D1. So if you are a coach at one of those lower levels, you may actually have MORE opportunities to cultivate relationships with local coaches.

If Acosta has those relationships, he's not going to be held back by not being a D1 coach before.

Somebody cue David Byrne... "Stop making sense"

D3 coaches recruit just as hard, they also don't have the advantage of full scholies. Recruiting is contacts with the programs and relating to the kids. As I said a few weeks ago, one of the best recruiters in the northeast up until 2 years ago, who is now in the NFL, built his contact base while at ithaca college. Quite common actually

@CoachPride10 Welcome to the Cuse. Hit Jersey hard. We need to reclaim our state.
That Coach Banks is surely Vernon Banks, a former player who was roommates with Donovan McNabb. If memory serves, he was a linebacker/special teams terror out of Rochester. Looks like he is a coach somewhere in Jersey now. Last I knew, he was coaching Bishop Kearney circca 2004.

Anyone know where he is now?

Oh I think you can find this Coach Banks posting here on the recruiting and football board...;)

Just look up.^^^^

Exactly. See exhibit A: Coach Lester. (Not a D1 coach, has meaningful connections, now a D1 coach = recruits).

Geez, never realized this. Thanks for pointing it out. It all makes sense now.

Yeah, this. You either have the relationships, or you don't. Schools have all levels of talent. If you have an in, you can recruit for any level.

Oye.

This is as close to a home run for the TE job here as you can get.

Hits all requirements other than experience at this level, which for the coaching job he has isn't really a prereq, it's a nice to have. TE, WR and DB are essentially entry level positions.

Did CL's post about looking up make you look at the ceiling??? Come on ..be honest...we are all friends here

Yeah bro, that's exactly what I did.

Good grief, was just asking What that post meant.

Just a joke Rocco...;)

I think I know what it meant but I'm not certain, so I'll keep my mouth shut and maybe CL will enlighten us
