Petar Majstorovic transferring to Long Beach St

Because they can get him to stay with a little money. And Petar has already been in our system for a year and earned the trust of our coaches, so I feel like he’s ahead of the curve here.
They can? We know this?

Maybe they offered a small sum and he said no thanks?

Maybe he wants to go somewhere he can play 25+ minutes a game?

I mean the guy came to the States verrrry late in the process. He’s figuring things out here as he goes.

Regardless, I’m not at all prepared to call SU dumb until we know, for sure, what has actually transpired.

This is where the portal stinks. You know this guy would improve each year and be a fan favorite by his senior year.
Eh, maybe it stinks for the P4 school that wants to stash him away for years.

For the kid who values playing time it probably doesn’t stink.

Would have loved to keep him but if we are speaking honestly, he’s a bench guy that shouldn’t be seeing significant minutes in a 1-8 role for a legit tourney team.

Wish him nothing but the best, but I think we’ll get much better players coming in from the portal.

It does mean we have to sign another center now. Majstorovic could also turn into a viable 3 point shooter, mixed it up defensively, and was a decent passer. This is a bigger loss than you think. He had skills that a lot of big guys don't have.

Yeah, but you need more than 8 guys, you need 11. He was never a starter, but think of the times he gave us 5 good minutes so Eddie could rest, or when Donnie was in foul trouble. He was like a bigger Kristof Ongenaet. Better outside shooter too. Not quite as quick, of course, but he's like 20 pounds and a couple inches bigger.

I'm sure he didn't leave because of Money. Most likely playing time or a change of scenery. Its not like he has anyone from this year's team left.

Oh well.

He's a 10th man on a great SU team, so whatever.

You need those, too. All we are is an injury or two away from not having enough depth in our big man rotation. We'll probably have to pay more to replace him than it would have cost to keep him. And there are not a lot of centers available. Now we need another one. Can't play Donnie there, not for more than maybe 5 minutes in a game.

I get it. But it’s hard to retain a guy when he knows he’s going to be deep depth.

I don’t blame anyone for wanting to play more of the sport they love. If he ends up getting 25+ minutes a game in the MAAC that’s probably a win for him.

I agree with you.

But we should remember this when people flip out over us adding guys that are one skill players.

Mostly because Red didn't use those one skill players very well at all last year. In fact, several of them he didn't use for several games at a time. Your one skill players also have to get comfortable in a predictable role and rotation. Red has to do that this year if those are the guys he's going to get.

Fair point. He should play more, and moving down a level will get that for him. But he's a way better player than Peter Carey.

That sucks. Judging by the comments, I liked him more than most. I seen potential in him. I could see him starting by Junior or Senior year.
Oh well. I wish him the best and hope he succeeds wherever he goes.

Very true. It’s also very difficult to find a portal kid that knows he’s going to be a bench piece too. I hate losing this kid. He does a lot if winning things in a game. The kid was only a freshman and people were complaining about fouls. Show me a freshman big who doesn’t foul a lot. As Etan who fouled out in four minutes of playing time.

A guy like Pete has to chase PT. Only get a bag if you show on film. I think he would have been a good depth piece here, but don't blame him for wanting minutes. Getting guys to willingly sit is just not going to happen anymore.

When I first saw Petar I really like his athleticism and hustle and loved his upside, However, as the season wore on, I was disappointed in his lack of skills and his lack of improvement and development. Never saw an athletic big get blocked at the rim so often.

So, as with all who leave the Cuse, wish em well, but will not care about him going forward.

As I have said in previous posts, we retained the only two who mattered.

Easily replaceable piece.

He's 6'8". If he was playing center for us, then we would have had huge issues.

To keep guys like him, you have to play your bench consistently. That was one of Autry's biggest failings last year, IMO.

As a backup, not as a starter. Where do you think he played last year?

All true, For all we know he wants to hang out on the beach or go to a new school every year.

Gimme a break. Petar got more time than he was ever expected to get. Paying a consistent bench with how much we stunk last year and the major injuries was not possible.
Playing your bench players was not an issue last year. Adrian was very consistent playing 9-10 guys. People talk about Red not having a system. His system is playing a lot of guys. The problem was how inconsistent his bench players were. It was hard to know who would play well when they went into the game. Having better players makes it easier to know who and when you put a player into the game. For years everyone complained that JB was only playing 6-7 guys and sometimes not subbing for the entire second half. People now complain because Red is playing too many guys. Every coach has their own idea of how they want to play. Neither is right or wrong. It’s their call.

Agree with the bolded. Petar showed up at SU very late and started getting double-digit minutes by the 4th game of the season. It's worth literally spelling it out for people. These are his minutes per game last season...

The guy really wasn't supposed to be a contributor yet he got double-digit minutes in 24 of his 31 games, including playing more than 20 minutes five times.

Petar was very much a regular rotation guy and got plenty of minutes. I suspect he left because it became apparent to him that he would receive LESS minutes next year. Which is good for the program.

Yeah, he's the one guy who got to play. What about McLeod and Cuffe not seeing any time until January? What about Donnie and Choppa playing in first halves, and then not getting back in?

Donnie 25 mins
Moore 15 mins
Cuffe 12
Petar 13
Naheem 6

I think your problem is substitution patterns not playing time. Either way we didn't have the coaching or talent and stunk.
