He missed all 3. He was actually 1-5 then made his next 5.

I agree on the outbidding. Fran brown approach. You wanna test the waters ok We’ll make it easy and put your name in the portal and get someone else.
I am not sure Red has Fran’s gravitas. At least not publicly.

I mean there was plenty of speculation by fans but has this actually been substantiated?
Not publicly. Because almost nothing is ever substantiated publicly. Obviously Syracuse media would never report on it. It’s still 1992 there.

My understanding is that the staff said it before the season began.

I got an idea, we just need to find a school who really wants Red and is willing to hire him and buy out his contract! Brilliant!
Good idea . Maybe Indiana will target him. I heard a rumor that he is one of the top 5 under consideration for Raritan valley community college. Not the front runner but in the mix.

Bulldog04 what were you hearing late summer/early fall in regard to the staff's thoughts on Westry?

Yep. Westry was an unknown entering the season. Staff felt anything they got from him was gravy.
Anyone with a pulse, inside or outside the program knew Westry wasn’t playing. For those who thought otherwise I feel for your blind allegiance.

We need a coach that believes that Syracuse has a place with the blue bloods, because that's where we have been. And, has a plan to get us back there. I like Red, he is a good man, but he talks about what he wants and displays no ability to deliver. Let's move on quickly and identify a worthy candidate and do what it takes to secure a commitment from that coach and his vision.

Has there been a recent update on how he's doing? I hope he gets that degree and keeps making progress towards being physically well, even if he can't suit up.

I think you just need to move on. They are a part of the no defense culture problem. The team needs an entire new energy and a new vibe, cant have leftover senior leaders that contributed to the problems.

We have money for 4-5 guys in the portal, they say.
We have to keep some of these guys. It will be cheaper that way.

Well then, why chase away Copeland? Westry appeared a like-for-like replacement, if he had been healthy after a whole year of rehab.

This is going to be an eventful off season. How many do we need, now much money is enough for 4-5 players? That isn't directed toward you IthacaMatt . If our coaching situation drives away all of our good players and we need 10 players, 4-5 is going to be half of a viable lineup. I would rather we concentrate on getting the right coaching staff in place. The roster will follow.

100% right. This is shocking if true. Utterly shocking. JW needs to be called out for this level of absolute incompetence if this is the case. How do you not learn your lesson, or at least be cautious, after the Babers debacle?! ADJW might have just signed his own death sentence because this program will be dead by the time Autry get fired. God help us.
Counterpoint, Babers wasn’t a debacle and everyone wanted him extended after 2018.

I took a shot at this a couple days ago.

We have Anthony and Saddiq White coming, Fennell and that 3 star forward named Womack who looks kind of like another Chris Bell.

Guards: JJ (?), Cuffe (?), Moore (?), Anthony (FR), Fennell (FR)
Forwards: Bell (?), Freeman (?), White (FR), Womack (FR)
Center: Majstorovic

Four new guys, plus we have to keep some of this year's guys to have a full roster.

Let's say we can afford 5 guys in the portal (extra money from the Anthonys).

1. PG with size who can make a 3 and create assists.
2. C who can protect the rim and has some low post offense.

3. Mature PF who can defend and board.
4. Experienced 3 point shooting wing.

Replace who left with the spare change. The first 2 might cost $1M+ each. A legit 3 point shooting wing is going to cost us at least $750. Then who do you keep and how much are you willing to pay to keep them?

Who seems most likely to leave? Well, of course the 4 rental players (Eddie, Carlos, Jyare and Lucas) are gone, and likely Westry. McLeod is a senior, too.

After that, I would say Bell, Freeman and Moore are more likely than not to leave. Losing Freeman and Moore would really damage our prospects of even being decent next year, IMO.

Freeman and Moore both received very inconsistent minutes, and there seemed a hint of their advisors telling them to hang it up for the season, regardless of how hurt they might be.

How much money will JJ want to stay? Somebody said he's getting $300K this year. I don't see us going very far if he is our most important player. So, where do you draw the line - $500K? Does anybody really outbid us for him?

I have a hard time seeing Chris Bell back next year after losing his starting job, and just his whiny head-case nature. He's a disruption. So, Womack is like a guy to grow into a SF, but he's nowhere near ready yet. He's a player for next year, or "Break Glass in Case of Emergency".

Kyle Cuffe isn't a starter, but geez, it seems like Autry went out of his way to chase him out of the team. He would be a glutton for punishment to come back. He's a useful player who never got a proper chance, and was misused.

Getting Freeman back would be very big. Him, Saddiq White and Majstorovic is something to work with in the front court.

You still need a rim protector who can provide low post offense. Has to be a good guy, at least Jesse Edwards quality. That would complete a pretty decent front court if we kept Freeman.

It's hard to see Moore staying with Anthony coming in, and how little he played this year. So, we're probably just trading Moore for Anthony. They both are rated about the same coming out of HS, so we can't count on Anthony for more than being a role player as a frosh, much like Moore this year. In fact, Moore was rated a better outside shooter than Kiyan. So, I hate to lose him, but is he really going to stay? Only way is if JJ moves on.

That would leave you with Anthony, Fennell, JJ / Moore (?), and then a portal PG who will have to be really top level. If Moore, JJ and Cuffe all leave, then you having to find a couple bench players to fill out your rotation, and one of them at a minimum is going to have to be a pretty good three point shooter.

Seems daunting. Coaching is the key.

Yeah, if certain of these guys leave, as may happen, we are going to have an awful lot of work to do to make a competitive roster. And it would seem to be a bad idea to go back to re-recruiting guys who Autry knew before they picked somebody else under JB, like he did in the past.

We know the coaching will be insufficient without new blood.

We have to pay for JJ any way right not like he is free? Use his money for a replacement that plays defense that works hard.

I think the hiring of hfcfb far out weighs anything with hoops right now. We got our selves a grndslam football coach . Things look ugly for Red now but barring an ethical issue I will be very surprised if he is not back next year. I would not be surprised to see a different assistant or two.

We LITERALLY just won 10 football games after a stellar football hire. Everyone get a grip.
People are so angry they just want to fire people. I have friends that have suggested the same. They think *someone* should be gone if it isn’t Red.

Counterpoint, Babers wasn’t a debacle and everyone wanted him extended after 2018.
Thats a very fair counterpoint. Debacle is probably to strong of a word, and many people did want him back. That said I think it helps to some degree to illustrate my general point that after having that contract experience you would think the athletic department would have even more reason to be conservative when issuing large contracts to unknown unproven individuals.

Bulldog04 what were you hearing late summer/early fall in regard to the staff's thoughts on Westry?
His summer workout was great. He was scrimmaging a ton. Practicing a ton. Working out a ton and then he got sick but he was still very engaged. I talked to him at Melo Madness which was October 21st and the first day he was out. He said he would be back in a couple weeks. He was fully planning on playing. I won’t share his personal business after that though why he’s not playing. But he was doing all the right things and was scrimmaging a ton so the injury talk from what I saw in practices wasn’t the issue
