Class of 2018 PF Bryce Golden (MD) to Butler

My opinion only, but I think the # our recruits are ranked is somewhat irrelevant. The issue isn't that we're aiming too high -- the issue is that we recruit an athletic profile that is attractive to the NBA. A guy like Lydon was rated in the 70s when we recruited him, but had the right athletic attributes that the NBA covets.

But I certainly do agree that we need to build better quality program depth, and then sprinkle that with a dose of higher rated players.
6'5"-6'6" shooting guards
6'8"-6'10" long forwards with some athletic ability

If those guys show any game early on, which they have been more and more lately as we haven't had depth in years, the NBA comes calling earlier than any could have expected. It shouldn't be a surprise, but many are still shocked by it.

It is not like we have had any mega-talents since Carmelo.

It is a tribute to the staff and the system that we can get so many mediocre (by NBA standards) players drafted in the first round.

I would think prospective recruits would be taking a hard look at that track level of success (too much success in terms of the needs of our program).

I like this guy's game.

Pretty nice jumpshot with some range. In video I watched he hit multiple 3s & looked comfortable doing so.

Seems like a decent enough athlete too. Quick first step allowed him to slide by guys on way to hoop. Quick enough jumper.

And, maybe best of all, guy wasn't afraid to get physical, back a guy down. We need that!

My only (slight) concern now is about his height. Listed at 6-9, but seeing people say more like 6-7? That's a somewhat important difference, IMO.

Either way, damn nice option to have unsigned at this point for us to recover from being "Bazley'd." Sign him up!!

Marek best be putting on 20 and working on stepping into his 18 footer this summer
Give me ten lbs of muscle and I’m good for next year. He’s sneaky and slinky. He gets to the spot last second- can’t box out something not there, when he gets fouled he looks like a rag doll thereby drawing questionable fouls, and he can run. With Carey this could be lethal. Add new found confidence and willingness this could be a breakout year for him big time(not nba big time) .

Bet this team exceeds last years dunks by 50 percent. ( imho)

One thing that's clear from the video above is this is a kid that can keep the defense honest. He can shoot and even make the 3. With Moyer, the guys guarding him literally gave him all the room in the world and he didn't know what to do with it. Really like how good his midrange looks. We have desperately needed guys that could put it in the hoop and it would be nice to know if he comes in for minutes that he can contribute. When moyer came in he was just a body for defense and fouls.

I don't know if he 'needs' to, but we certainly 'need' the Marek we saw over the last month of the season. He will have to be stronger and more able to absorb contact. He needs to really improve his handle when attempting to drive. I think his jumper will be fine, but if he extends it out to 3pt range, fantastic. Most of all, I hope he's more aggressive, especially it attacking the basket.
Marek's progression was really cool, but does anyone think part of it was based on teams not respecting him and playing 'off?' Gotta expect he's going to be defended differently next year. His jumper should 'translate,' but it's going to be more contested. Everything is going to be a bit 'tighter.'

...which in turn would open things up for other players that defenses aren't paying the same level of attention to anymore.

I hope we get him. In that video he looks like a prototypical U of Virginia forward.

He already starts out far along on the learning curve. His shooting touch reminds me of that Maryland kid Huerter who was shooting 35 footers and almost single-handedly beat us this year. Golden will become a potent weapon in the arsenal. A little SU's private box schmoozing in the Dome during the Spring Game. Oh yeah. Hope he's ours.
