Honestly, removing plausible deniability as a defense is the only way to enforce the amateur rules. Same applies to how the head coaches are regulated. It may seem unfair and punitive in some cases but it has to be that way.

What about Self? Wasn’t he identified from texts as knowing about all of this when it went down? KU should be bracing for more hammers.

I feel for the kid, but how else is the NCAA going to stop the illicit payments if the deeds of the family don’t impact the player? Not saying it’s right or wrong, but the NCAA certainly didn’t hand slap and move on this time, which everyone typically complains about. They made a very clear statement with a gut punch. Hopefully there is more to come that will impact KU and Self / staff.

Now, if the NCAA had a heart (and we all know they don’t), they would have said his second option would be to take time served and move on to another school and play right away. That way DeSouza is able to continue his career and KU gets dinged by losing a top player they cheated to get.

Agreed, and the hope is that the severe penalties will get others to self regulate ie. make the determination that the risk is too great to go there.

But as long as people don't want to be honest and play by the rules it will be next to impossible for the NCAA to enforce the eligibility rules even handedly. They need to find clear evidence of the payments or benefits, which isn't easy. Then they need to have the determination to enforce rules in situations like this where the clear evidence only ties indirectly to the player or the school.

For everyone feeling sorry for DeSousa or Kansas how many times have we watched a recruitment go down where a top kid suddenly ends up at UK, KU, AZ or a plethora of other schools that we think are dirty, only to have nothing done. Maybe this is pay back for Bill Preston or Josh Selby or any number of others?

If the schools or coaches were actually writing checks to the kids, or directly handing them bags of money if might be easy to regulate. When you have off-shore shell companies owned by boosters sending money to a prospect's mother's boy friend's second cousin it's really hard to regulate unless you take some bold and draconian steps.
