Class of 2026 PG Dylan Mingo (NY / LuHi)

Eh, there have been a lot of butthurt fans that claim Donnie is a loser and are genuinely surprised he has the interest of good programs.
He’s a loser because he lost here . He has good programs after him because he’s talented. He gets to write th rest of his story because if it all clicks he’ll have an All-American level year somewhere….

But he was still not good here.

If UNC won't pay for an injured, elite player to sit a year why on Earth would we? There's 0 guarantee of an ROI year 2 when healthy so why pay year 1 when injured? He didn't initially pick us when healthy, why would we sign up when he's injured?

Unless he takes $0 NIL there truly isn't any reason to waste an open scholarship that could go to a warm body that will practice and play. This is the risk for NIL era players chasing bags and hopefully will give pause (but likely won't) to players committing to factories moving forward.

For sure a long shot to sign Dylan. Agree it is a risky endeavor. He is the #8 rated hs player in the country and if we could get him at a reasonable price, I wouldn't say no. We do have a couple of connections with Coach Brunt (recruited and coached his brother at PSU) and with Kiyan (who he was hs teammates with at L.I. Lutheran). Not that often we have a shot at a kid ranked that high.

But again, he's a potential 1 and none like the Creighton kid we're after. Unless there's a contractual obligation to year 2, why pay year 1? He can just go back to UNC for more money year 2 when healthy.

You make valid points. Some of this stuff can be discussed and clarified to each party. Also do we know the extent of his health issues? I have to know more before I would say yes or no.

Presume since it's enough that UNC cut ties it's significant but who knows. I'd feel differently if he'd committed to Cuse to begin with but here we are.

Does anyone know how these NIL agreements work? In the case of Mingo, could we offer $1.5 million to come to SU and IF he plays over 20 games and averages 20 points a game or SU gets to the NCAA Tournament he could make up to $4 million? My point is are there incentive laden deals with NIL - in this case the player is dealing with injuries - (might not be the incentives I have proposed but you get the idea).

Nope. That would be pay to play. Verboten.

Anything is possible if it's not written in a contract. But that wouldn't pass the clearinghouse. Would have to be a verbal agreement and I wouldn't advise anyone to do that.

I think you can make anything pass the clearinghouse.

It’s right in the article.

“Given his health may be in question, how could the Tar Heels justify paying him top NIL dollar for a high school recruit to have him redshirt, leaving them with a big void to fill on the roster and less financial flexibility to work with.”

Seems like a valid reason to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️
That's the flip side of the Wild Wild West we now live in. Players can move every single year, and you have to pay them to stay, so why would a school invest significant money on a player who needs to develop or get healthy during Year 1? Once they have developed or gotten healthy on your dime, they can leave, having provided you nothing for your investment, and go to the highest bidder elsewhere.
