Finished up this game this morning. I didn't track Yalden's stats as I just don't really buy that he'll be a guy we're super in on just based on his build and style of play but maybe I'll have to eat crow on that later on. At any rate, Yalden's a fun watch. He barely leaves his feet as a player but does a pretty good job using the rim and his body to protect the ball when he's going up with it around the rim. Definitely uses his size to move guys around and seal them off with ease. However, his lack of height and athleticism shows up pretty regularly; he struggles to keep guys off the glass and if he doesn't push his man all the way under the rim or seal him off perfectly, they're able to defend him pretty easily. Definitely didn't see any of the passes you get from his highlight videos and I think he missed every jumpshot he took, including an airball or two.
In general, City Rocks is probably the most impressive team I've seen tactically speaking. They run some nice offensive sets; a lot of stagger screens, flair screens, even some Spanish pick and roll mixed in there. Pretty cool to see at the AAU level. Team Durant has Kwame Evans, the #2 recruit in the country, and City Rocks doesn't really have anybody that can go create their own shots or really even create for their teammates and yet they were able to win this game due to those relatively sophisticated sets.
Now to Trey Autry's game...I have him down unofficially with:
- 18 points on 3/4 2 pointers, 4/8 3 pointers, and 0 free throws for a TS% of 75.0%.
- 1 assist to 0 turnovers
- 3 rebounds
- 1 block, 0 steals
He started off the game really nicely with an early block and the first 5 points of the game. From there, he probably missed his next 4 or 5 shots before getting hot down the stretch and kinda carrying the team to the win. Like I said, Autry is the only person whose stats I tracked, but just from watching, I believe he led his team in scoring and maybe outscored anyone from Team Durant as well (#35 on their team seemed to score pretty regularly though). Defensively, he's well built and is able to fight through screens pretty well. Off-ball, he sinks into the paint to help a lot and sometimes gets caught ball-watching and not knowing where his man is. Does a nice job of playing with verticality; he doesn't really try to block shots but just jumps straight up with arms straight up and tries to make things difficult.
Offensively, City Rocks runs their offense exclusively through their PG; nobody else really handles the ball at all. The little bit I got to see of Autry handling the ball, I don't think he changes direction particularly well. At any rate, can't really draw many conclusions out of that area of his game. Off-ball, he was running around those stagger screens and flair screens that I mentioned and seeking out space to shoot 3's. I don't think he had any shots inside with the exception of a few fast break/leak outs. The only real impressive work he did inside was a drive and layup that ended up being a shot clock violation. You'd think with his build that he'd be getting to the hoop regularly but that just wasn't the case in this game at least.
I threw together a clip here of a few back-to-back-to-back plays Autry made at the end of the 3rd quarter to give City Rocks the lead. As you can see, pretty smooth shooting motion with no real wasted movement.
