Class of 2023 PG Trey Autry (Jamesville-Dewitt / OH) Verbal to George Washington

Wonder if GMAC is recruiting him.

As an aside, and with due respect to GMac, Red's 31 points in the 2nd half in the NCAA against Missouri is the greatest half I have ever seen from a SU player.
I mentioned that to him on a call in show, and he agreed that the shot from his knees should have been an "and 1".
Nobody will ever forget that shot from his knees. We should have won that game. The next year we should have won the NC.

I actually would be fine if we took Trey. He has the size, decisive athlete and can shoot it well enough. He’d probably be a 2 guard here but he can handle the rock.

I think he’s going to be a really good college player. I don’t think he’ll ever be a first round NBA talent but I think he can be good here….here’s my comp. Brandon Triche

Big, strong and can shoot and handle it while also knowing how to use that strenghth. One thing that hasn't changed is that formula makes for a successful collegiate guard. Triche is the ideal comparison as well. Seems like a pretty easy decision to me to bring him on.

B Triche was one of the most unsung and underrated players we have ever had so I will take another player like that in a heartbeat.

For those that are interested, Trey and Gus Yalden play at 1:54:00 on this video:

Championship calibre teams need winners like Triche.

For those that are interested, Trey and Gus Yalden play at 1:54:00 on this video:
Finished up this game this morning. I didn't track Yalden's stats as I just don't really buy that he'll be a guy we're super in on just based on his build and style of play but maybe I'll have to eat crow on that later on. At any rate, Yalden's a fun watch. He barely leaves his feet as a player but does a pretty good job using the rim and his body to protect the ball when he's going up with it around the rim. Definitely uses his size to move guys around and seal them off with ease. However, his lack of height and athleticism shows up pretty regularly; he struggles to keep guys off the glass and if he doesn't push his man all the way under the rim or seal him off perfectly, they're able to defend him pretty easily. Definitely didn't see any of the passes you get from his highlight videos and I think he missed every jumpshot he took, including an airball or two.

In general, City Rocks is probably the most impressive team I've seen tactically speaking. They run some nice offensive sets; a lot of stagger screens, flair screens, even some Spanish pick and roll mixed in there. Pretty cool to see at the AAU level. Team Durant has Kwame Evans, the #2 recruit in the country, and City Rocks doesn't really have anybody that can go create their own shots or really even create for their teammates and yet they were able to win this game due to those relatively sophisticated sets.

Now to Trey Autry's game...I have him down unofficially with:
  • 18 points on 3/4 2 pointers, 4/8 3 pointers, and 0 free throws for a TS% of 75.0%.
  • 1 assist to 0 turnovers
  • 3 rebounds
  • 1 block, 0 steals
He started off the game really nicely with an early block and the first 5 points of the game. From there, he probably missed his next 4 or 5 shots before getting hot down the stretch and kinda carrying the team to the win. Like I said, Autry is the only person whose stats I tracked, but just from watching, I believe he led his team in scoring and maybe outscored anyone from Team Durant as well (#35 on their team seemed to score pretty regularly though). Defensively, he's well built and is able to fight through screens pretty well. Off-ball, he sinks into the paint to help a lot and sometimes gets caught ball-watching and not knowing where his man is. Does a nice job of playing with verticality; he doesn't really try to block shots but just jumps straight up with arms straight up and tries to make things difficult.

Offensively, City Rocks runs their offense exclusively through their PG; nobody else really handles the ball at all. The little bit I got to see of Autry handling the ball, I don't think he changes direction particularly well. At any rate, can't really draw many conclusions out of that area of his game. Off-ball, he was running around those stagger screens and flair screens that I mentioned and seeking out space to shoot 3's. I don't think he had any shots inside with the exception of a few fast break/leak outs. The only real impressive work he did inside was a drive and layup that ended up being a shot clock violation. You'd think with his build that he'd be getting to the hoop regularly but that just wasn't the case in this game at least.

I threw together a clip here of a few back-to-back-to-back plays Autry made at the end of the 3rd quarter to give City Rocks the lead. As you can see, pretty smooth shooting motion with no real wasted movement.

Good stuff. I caught the first quarter only but gotta agree on the sets- a lot more sophisticated than you would expect for aau. Good stuff though and well executed.

Yalden didn't look all that comfortable with the ball outside the paint unless putting a shot up in that 1Q. As for Autry, yeah he almost played more like a 6-4 stretch 4 from what I saw not looking to drive or be on the ball that much. With as disciplined as they are in their sets you could say that plays into it as well. Very little ball stopping or iso beyond the PG penetrating.

They play again 6:13:10 into this video.
Game #2 is complete. Very different rotations from the coach in this one, including pulling Trey and Kayvaun Mulready (who was having the best game on the team IMO) for the final few minutes of the game as they tried to come back. Not really sure what that was about. Autry also technically didn't start this game, though he subbed in literally 10-20 seconds into it.

At any rate, Trey unofficially finished with:
  • 15 points on 2/4 2 pointers (all at the rim), 1/3 3 pointers, and 8/8 FT shooting for a TS% of 71.3%
  • 2 assists to 1 turnover
  • 9 rebounds
This game was more of the same from him, with the main difference being that he crashed the glass a lot more. He doesn't box out but he would come flying in from the 3 point line and just try to outjump people for rebounds and as you can tell, it worked well for the most part. Nobody on this team outside of Yalden really boxes out, and that ultimately might have cost them the game here (along with some good 3 point shooting from Drive Nation).

Trey got to the line for 8 free throw attempts; 6 of which came on 3 pointers. The other two came off an offensive rebound where he immediately went up with it. He got to handle the ball significantly more in this one, as the coach gave his starting PG a lot more rest and their backup is pretty terrible. I wouldn't say it's a strong suit of his; he looked down at the ball when making moves with it and it's just one of those things where the ball slows his movements down a lot.

If I were working with him on his game, I'd probably be trying to improve his ball-handling and hip flexibility. He's pretty smart moving off-ball, but his backdoor cuts aren't very good and I think it may be an issue where he can't flip his hips quickly enough; might be part of why he's not very good changing direction with the ball either. The shooting, athleticism, and intellect already seem to be there, but listed at 6'3" (though I feel like he may be taller than that?), he's going to want to improve in those areas to round out his game. That's my read of it through two games anyways; obviously his dad and his coaches probably know his game much better than me.

One more game here. Starts at 3:15:52. I don't recommend this one as Autry was just off the whole game and ultimately didn't play nearly as much as usual.

I have him unofficially down for:
  • 4 points on 2/5 2 pointers, 0/2 3 pointers, and 0 free throws for a TS% of 28.6%
  • 0 assists to 1 turnover
  • 0 rebounds
  • 1 block
He just didn't have it in this one for whatever reason and City Rocks ended up inserting some more athletic guys that played with a lot more energy.

Across the 3 EYBL games, Autry finished averaging 12 points and 4 rebounds per game on a TS% of 62.7%. He shot 53.8% from 2 point range and 38.5% from 3. I'd say it was probably a good weekend overall for him, particularly in leading his team to the win against one of the top recruits in the country. It sounds like he's gotten a few scholarships out of it already and that's no surprise to me.

Autry and Damarius Owens' HS team game starts 1:33:00 into this video (hopefully I've set up the link to automatically start there but it was the second game of a double-header).

Kiski ultimately beat Autry/Owens' team but Autry and Braden Appelhans (committed to New Mexico) led a double digit comeback in the final 5ish minutes and briefly took the lead before losing it down the stretch. Owens technically plays C for WRA, handling the opening tip and manning the middle of their 2-3 zone, but he operates on the perimeter in their 4 out offensive system with their other big man living in the paint. He sets a lot of screens and both flashes out to the 3 point line and rolls to the hoop depending on the situation. Autry generally operates as their primary ball-handler, which is nice to see since he's mostly relegated to being a spot-up shooter with City Rocks.

Owens unofficially finished with:
  • 11 points on 2/7 two pointers (2/5 at the rim and 0/2 from mid-range), 1/3 three pointers, and 4/4 FT shooting for a TS% of 46.8%.
  • 2 rebounds
  • 3 assists to 4 turnovers
  • 1 steal and 4 fouls
The results weren't very pretty in this one for Owens but I like his game a lot. Hopefully will see him making more of his shots/finishing better in future games, but he's a very good athlete with some creativity off the dribble, pretty solid shooting form and very good elevation. Seems to fall away on his free throws but it worked for him in this game at least. Probably more hunched over in his defensive stance than you'd like, but he does a pretty good job of trying to get in his stance and contests jumpers well. He bit on a few pump fakes/closed out out of control, but he could turn into a very good defensive player IMO. If he's truly still growing as my friend in Rochester said, this kid could really blow up as he hones his skills. There's certainly developing to be done; he puts too much mustard on his pocket passes, definitely would like to see him bulk up a bit and become more disciplined defensively, but he has star potential if he can pull it all together. He should be a priority recruit for us IMO.

As for Autry, he unofficially finished with:
  • 14 points on 3/5 two pointers (all at the rim), 1/4 three pointers (with the one make being a halfcourt shot), and 5/6 FT shooting for a TS% of 60.1%
  • 8 rebounds
  • 5 assists to 3 turnovers
  • 2 steals and 3 fouls
Autry was kinda quiet for awhile but came up pretty big down the stretch in pulling WRA back into the game. Autry is a lot further developed physically than Owens at this stage; he's a strong 6'3" or 6'4" or whatever he is and uses that strength to mix it up inside and grab contested rebounds. He does a nice job of getting into his defensive stance. He can get blown by here and there, but his physical strength and technique are really good; I think he could be a really nice defender in the future. I wouldn't say he has great hands in terms of picking people's pockets, but he has strong hands; when he gets his hands on a 50-50 ball, he seems to come away with it almost every time. I continue to be pretty impressed with Autry; maybe because he's billed as more of a mid-major or small D1 prospect, but I don't think he's any worse than the guys we have coming in this year (granted I'm not as rosy on some of them as the recruiting services are, but still, I think Autry belongs. I wouldn't really say he's a priority recruit, but if he ends up being one of the final pieces to our recruiting class, I'd be pretty content.

If these guys end up at Syracuse, I really think we'd be doing them a disservice if we continued to play 100% 2-3 zone. If they continue their development, I think they can both be very good man-to-man defenders. They can certainly play in a 2-3, but I don't think it would be making the most of their skills.
