Got to spend friday at the PGA. Spent half a day in pouring rain. The afternoon in beautiful sunshine.. Lots of mud in places.
First time seeing oak hill in person.. great course. Its tough if you get out of place. Greens are not all that big in most places. Lots of bunkers. For as low as the scores were yesterday the pro's missed tons of putts. the rain is making the course much easier to make shots but that may change today as the were out rolling the greens to try and get the speed up.. But still there are so soft unless they get harder guys may still throw darts.. Anyone who stays in the fairway has a chance to score, but guys were scared to put downhill yesterday and they are going to user the tougher pins now.
Huge oak trees 5-6 ft in diameter. It would be a great course to play because they give you a chance to make a great recovery shot if you can pull it off.
for an older course its built well for this type of golf. so many holes have great spots for watching multiple tee/green shots without moving. for people going try to get in the spots between holes , people tend to stay on the outer ring and there are 2-3 places you can get if you cross over where the crowd is much less.
followed some of back none of phil in the morning, wayward all day but some great recovery.. followed the front nine of tiger, easily 4-5 times as many people following tiger. you had to stay 1-2 holes ahead to really see much, but he played the afternoon round and the rain had stopped so the crowd as much much larger on the course.
a great spot on 13 to watch where you can sit so saw 7-8 groups go thru, saw dufner get to 6 under, kept on eye on the scoreboard as everyone waited for tiger to come thru.. Saw that Dufner got to 7 under and when tiger came thru 13 Dufner was on 17 so jumped over. The crowd was 20 deep watching tiger drive the 14 green and most were un aware dufner had a shot at the record, Got to where we could see him approach 18 and see him putt but still many in the crowd had no idea that putt was for the record.
they dont plan on cutting the rough so it may cause scores to go down as the course speeds up.
for Tomcat the food prep left something to be desired. burgers/dogs/pulled pork, 3 kinds or prepared subs and some ceaser salad. lots of soda, but saw no ginger ale.. When we tried to eat they literally had no food. there were 4 lines of people 50 deep and they were bringing out a box of 10 burgers at a time , huge wait, people getting pissed.. All they had was soda and beer.. 45 min wait for a hot dog. they have some carts out with chips/soda and icecream on the course but they need to spread food out a bit better
if you plan on eating to stay away from the two food courts around the clubhouse and the 7-8 fairway. The one on 14 and another out around 3-4 are much quieter.
tickets on stub hub started at $45 were up to $110 three weeks out and back to $40 by last week..
anyone going who has questions let me know
forgot. parking is pretty easy to get to but about a 25 min bus ride.. from syracuse take the 490 all the way in dont go the 390 route.. some construction and congestion that way
