Pick and roll

The way Rak has really stepped up, they need to feature a heavy dose of this going forward.

It was there all night, needed to keep going to it.

Also liked the idea what Grant and Rak tried to do late, just need to improve the execution on that as well.

Agreed. The two man game with tyler and rak should have been our offense every time down the court the last 5 mins. Was really surprised tyler didnt go iso more vs trying to go with cj off the curl or jerami 1 on 1

Except that Rak traveled twice. He fixes that, the sky is the limit on this team.

I question a couple of those. It looked like the ref anticipated the call after the first one and whistled before it happened.

Nah, they were both pretty blatant.

The second travel of nonsense.

You are right on the sky's the limit part. Now just need to get Ennis to stop missing bunnies.

you didn't think he traveled the second time? He did.

Along with the poor finishing, Ennis's other major weakness involves the pick and roll (well, that, and his difficulty with alley-oops - it's starting to look like there's a reason he attempts so few).

Anyway, Christmas comes out on the high pick and roll and dives to the basket and Ennis tends to just look away. We're giving up some easy points there.

A lot of what happens in games comes from what happens in practice. Ennis knows what Rak can do and can't. As he improves, Tyler will know.

It looks like Rak can score against most of these Centers we play, yet we rarely give him the ball. You have to be Olajuwan for a Syracuse team to feed the post.

As you know, Go, I've been championing this point in the chat room during games for weeks. :)

Especially against teams that overplay the wing passes on our baseline screens (in other words, when we run "2" or "3"), we need to spread defenders out and run pick and roll. As defenders "hug" their assignments in order to deny passes, p-n-r opens dribble-drive lanes, forces mismatches if the defense switches, and creates open chances when defenders must commit to helping.

The p-n-r would help against teams like NC ST and Virginia, too--teams that sag off of players (aka play pack-line defense) in order to crowd the lane with help. For example, run a high p-n-r with Ennis and Christmas. Place Fair (in the corner) and Grant (free throw line extended) on one side of the floor, and Cooney in the corner on the other side--the side Ennis wants to go. If Cooney's man remains sagging in the lane to help take away Ennis's drive off the ball screen, Cooney should loop up toward the wing/top of the key. He would likely have an open three. If the defender rushes out to stop that pass instead of helping, Ennis should have a lane to the hoop. If the defense hard hedges the ball screen, Ennis could split the defenders, or reverse dribble and hit Fair, whose defender is likely responsible for taking away Christmas's roll in the paint. Grant should down screen Fair's defender, pinning him deep in the lane. That should give Fair room for an open jumper or to drive the lane and look to draw a foul.

Spreading the floor and pulling defenders out of the lane to defend the ball screen as the offense is initiated would make longer recoveries for help defenders. Of course, our players would likely have to utilize more shot fakes as defenders close out. These fakes manipulate the defense, which is something we don't do enough of at times.

In short, the p-n-r can help the team find ways to exploit defenses more effectively. There are other tactics (quicker passes, off-ball player movement to manipulate the defense, more posts flaring against overplay, more post feeds) I'd like to see the team employ in combination with it, but p-n-r is likely the offensive key to another deep tourney run.

I'll have to take your word for it, don't really go to the chat room much. That being said good stuff.

Reward the big man for working hard, and open up shots for others. Rak seems to make good decisions most of the time.

Also, glad this post was about basketball and not another JB picture.

Disagree with all.

Disagree with all.

Weird post.

Do you have anything to add?

There's little more irritating than when someone responds to an observation or set of observations with a terse "disagree."

You disagree? Bully for you. If someone hasn't seen Ennis struggle to consistently finish layups this season, that person hasn't been watching very closely. If someone has seen Ennis have any success with the high pick and roll, I'd love to hear it. Specifics. Not generalities.
