PITT Postgame

From an Xs and Os standpoint point sure. But no player that really respects their coach just stops playing as ours does. That is on the coach. They may like Red, but by not giving effort for 40 minutes on defense shows the disrespect.

Also the offense stalling out at the end of games is 1000000% on the coach.
Actually the offense at the very end of games has saved us from the lack of concentration, focus when the point spread became too close. We have had offensive spurts that have widened or closed the gap at the very end of games. It’s the poor execution and lack of focus after we get good leads that hurts us.

Exactly. BC and FSU might be the worst teams we play the rest of the way. We have to win these two and win big. And then the following week is also key. We have to beat Virginia Tech and Miami at home. Both of those teams are around the same talent level as Cuse, but they’re MUST WIN games at home. Both would be Q2 wins. So if we can win the next four, we’d be 15-5 and in a better position going into the more difficult portion of the schedule. We’ll be playing very good teams in February, but a lot of those games present key Q1 opportunities in order to burnish our tourney resume. Games at NC State and Wake, at home vs North Carolina and SMU, and on the road vs Duke, Louisville and Virginia are all huge opportunities to get resume wins.
Let's hope so, watched a bit of Miami today, they are pretty big. Center and back up center are 266lbs and 274lbs respectively. We're very lucky to have William Kyle on our team. And Soure is serviceable as back up.

Any road win is a good win.

I thought the zone was terrible. We stopped them maybe one time playing it.

George was great in the first half and poor in the second again. I think we need to give him more of a breather.

Kingz is just a bit off. All his misses are so close.

What else can anyone say about Donnie and Kyle. They are our two best players.

JJ had his best game in a calendar year. Some are going to think that he’s changed a corner, but I’d be cautious buying into him playing that well going forward based on the past 15 or so games against power opponents.

Red still messes with our game flow with mass subs. It’s a big reason we lose momentum. Most of the turnovers are correctable and unforced.

I hope you all noticed that when Kyle was out, in the 2nd half (and maybe the end of the 1st half ...), he played Donnie at the 5, and used him as the pick man, like we've been talking about. Donnie hit about 3 threes, and that's when our offense blew it open.

Am I crazy or is the free throw thing fixed somehow? Seriously Kingz and George were the only ones that missed them tonight. 83%. Kiyan 2/2, Suare 2/2, JJ 2/2, and Kyle goes 1/1.

Feels like a switch flipped somewhere. Wonder if anyone heard if they actually did anything different lately but it's showing.
People need to know this!

Can’t help but wonder why Kiyan played only 10 minutes?

Go watch a replay. When Kiyan came on in the first half, Capel went at him right away on their first 3 possessions and scored each time. It's not just fans being critical of his defense in a "my opinion is as good as yours" kind of way.

It's arguably the worst coach in the ACC knowing to go after him as soon as he came in. Yes, Kiyan drew that foul in the lane after giving up the 2nd one. That's why I asked about his plus/minus after the other game.

When he came in during the 2nd half, same thing happened, and then Red went to zone, to try to protect him, to give him a chance to get going on offense.

BullS__T!

Cummings was embarrassing everyone until he got tired.
Yea he did. It's crazy cuz Capel clearly is a play the hot hand guy and Autry is the opposite. I'm not sure either knows what's best but Cummings had huge games against us and Hofstra and they lost both.

Seemed like we were willing to live with Cummings beating us with jumpshots as long as they weren't 3.s He made some really tough shots too.

Too many HOF caliber coaches on this board that forget there are two teams out there. It did get a bit dicey for a few minutes there. The refs swallowed the whistle and Pitt kept clutching and grabbing (what did they have to lose). We stopped scoring for a few minutes. In that same time, Cummings made 3-4 incredible plays. That’s sport. That’s not bad coaching.
I sat in the courtside club in a rather dead arena. Cummings was great all day. Towards the end they ran him off screens. For what it’s worth. Red went zone to contain him and I believe Pitt at one time was shooting 22 percent from 3. We didn’t rebound well in the zone but that’s life sometimes. I thought overall we played well. The guys have a ton more energy this year. I want to shout out JJ, Kiyan, Sadiq, and William for being so great to my kids today. That stuff matters to the little orange guys.

I thought he let JJ ride pretty long today. Kiyan only 10 minutes. Betsey had to see an increase in his minutes too but that’s just a guess

Didn’t think Freeman would be this much of an upgrade for the team but he is - particularly he comes up huge because Kyle goes for so many blocks that we were getting killed on the boards - Freeman totally addresses that - let lone he is a good defender he’s our best FT shooter, best 3 point shooter and best scorer

Great thoughts, however this is the style that Red wants to play concerning a lot of people, I honestly think he is shortening his bench slightly. A lot of people were clamoring for Kiyan, exponentially and I think he is going to be a tremendous player. However it seems to me that things stagnate offensively when he is in the game and from a defensive standpoint significant liability. My hope is that he would be subbed for JJ with the rest of the starting 5 to a greater degree with greater defensive intensity and focus. In five games I would like to see what the plus/minus is when he is in the game

It was more than that. Yes, we were making shots, but we were working for good quality shots. That’s a product of good offense movement and sets.

As opposed to the end of the game when shots get harder, guys standing around, several shot clock heaves to avoid violations, Donnie iso ball, etc.
Good post Hyatts.

I was wondering how many would notice that we were running different sets in the motion offense. Big change. Lots more off ball movement, multiple screening weak and strong side, down screens to low block, staggered screens, and pick and pops (Freeman mostly, but I believe they ran a couple of sets for Betsey). Less of an emphasis of trying to "pressure the rim" (Red's term) via dribble penetration.

As Pitt chipped away, Red attempted to control the clock and reverted back to the same old stuff. But it wasn't all Red. The turnovers and lapses in attention to detail is a player thing.
