Pitt Postgame

The other team I follow really closely is Illinois. When Illinois played UCLA a couple weeks ago they lost on a buzzer beater by Donovan Dent where he went end-to-end in 4.9 seconds for the win.

In the post-game they talked a lot about how UCLA practices that moment repeatedly so the players have a grasp on how much time they have based on clock and how far up court they can get in X seconds.

I'm sure most every team does this.

I'm quite sure we did as well. Maybe once. Back in November.

The irony is that JJ is basically built for that play.

Kyle’s been pretty invisible lately too but he still seems to get blocks but his rebounding is way down from what we saw in the beginning of the year. He had just 2 rebounds in an OT game today, just 1 against Wake. I still don’t understand why he has so few fga in games. Today he scored on a screen for SU’s first bucket and then only 4 more attempts (making 2 of them) the rest of the game. Why?
William’s never really been a ball-hawk on the boards. You may notice it, but he tends to screen guys out, specifically his assignment (big man) to let others try to get the board. High pointing the ball off the rim, not so much.

I think the lack of FGA is a function of lack of mid-range, but I had much higher hopes of him playing with a really good PG, which he hasn’t had since his Sophomore year. No, he doesn’t need to be the focal point of an offense, but an average 3-5 touches in the post would have been nice. He’s actually a really good passer out of there, even though some feel otherwise, but I think there were a few dimes dropped this season, that made you say damn. Also, he can actually knock the jump baby hook down too, so everything didn’t have to be a dunk.

Probably not a surprise, but we’re related (check the post history, LOL). It’s been a joy watching him get an opportunity to play on a high level, after leaving SDSU, and UCLA not even giving a chance, so much appreciated to Cuse nation. He’ll be the first to tell you he’s bummed that they couldn’t do better, but will also express his gratefulness to play for a great fanbase. He’s a very prideful young man, that likes to win, and would be extremely pissed after a loss. He’s probably in not much of talking mood now.

Participating on this board, the parallels between SU basketball and NU football is scary. You guys are just like us with the love/hate relationship for your team, coaches, etc. You guys also support when there doesn’t appear to be many reasons to. Sometimes we wonder if we’re gluttons for punishment.

That dome is an amazing place, we visited for the ND game, and know it will be rocking again soon. Glad we got to see a win. Let’s see what happens in the tourney. One game at a time, right?

Guys who go for blocks instead of bodying up to box out or get position never have great rebounding #’s. I’ll take blocked shots as the usually lead to easy baskets with most teams.

Well you can tell how much we appreciate William. Wish we could have him another year. I was shocked how little chance he got at UCLA (you probably saw my posts on it). Hoping he has a great future with his degree and should earn some money playing after he leaves SU. He’s been a pleasure to watch, love his energy. Hope you stick around and become an SU fan.

Hate to say it because Kyle is such a hard worker and competitor, but I think he started going through the motions a bit once it became abundantly clear that his teammates weren't putting in the effort he was.

There was a stretch of games towards the middle of the year where he seemed visibly frustrated by the lack of help he was getting defensively from the forwards down low. In the later games it seemed like he kind of accepted that's just how it was going to be.

Eventually any competitor would wear down mentally when getting as little help as he did.

I thought the overtime period was what this team basically stood for.
No offensive leadership, running out of time on the shot clock twice, piss poor defensive effort, sloppy passing, no heart.
They literally snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
We do everything backwards.
Hardly anyone was at the game as well.
To see firsthand how far this program has sunk.

I’m probably the only person bothered by this but why did Syracuse give the seniors framed jerseys of our previous jersey style and not the current script jersey?

I think only JJ ever even played a game on the old style block font jersey from 3 years ago.

He's not really gonna generate his own offense, so once Pitt got better at eliminating his lobs he needed to get more offensive rebounds. There were a few times he had the ball under the basket, but he was immediately surrounded and had to give it up.

There was a small moment late in the game that seemed pretty symbolic of this team to me.

During a time out George was animatedly talking to Donnie and shimmying his shoulders. Appeared that he was either telling Donnie that’s what he should do to a defender, or that he himself should do it.

Donnie, stone faced, snapped a couple words back and George literally looked like he was scolded by a parent and shut down. Shoulders dropped and he sloughed away.

This team was just all sorts of weird the last 2 months.

Good observation, none of them looked like they enjoy playing basketball together

Because they had leftovers.

I know he’s not a good shooter but I would have preferred the ball in Starlings hands there due to his super fast end to end speed. I think he could have gotten the ball well past half court. Oh well.
There's no rule against making passes to advance the ball into a position to get a decent look. I guess that's all they could come up with during that final time out for review? Just one more example of no coaching.

Are we absolutely sure Red has practiced this ? We probably have though you would never know it based on our last play.

Come on guys. It was a good game. They came back from down 12 and down the stretch each team absorbed body shots from the opponent in making big play after big play. Yeah they aren’t good. Yeah the coaching is ……yeesh. But factoring in all that, this game unto itself was entertaining and players made plays. George shot the ball too early but it was still an exiting finish .. gotta grade these things on a curve

Yeah, Kyle getting blocks and Donnie getting the rebounds works just fine. Kyle's rebounding was way way way down rhe list of stuff to worry about.

I believe the rule also says you don't have to shoot the ball with 2 seconds left. Terrible execution of whatever it should have been. A microcosm of the season.
