QUARTERFINALS
I was checking my I-Phone during the SU-St. John’s basketball game and saw a score that shocked me: #4 Wartburg was ahead of #1 and defending national champion WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER 33-16 in the third period. By the time I left the Carrier Dome it was 33-30. When I got home Whitewater had won 37-33 and were one win away from a return trip to the finals and a possible 9th meeting with Mount Union for the national championship. I find this frustrating because the D3 championship game used to be a means of seeing teams that had been just scores in the Sunday paper come alive: you’d see two new teams every year, or most years anyway. But for a decade it’s been Whitewater- Mount Union. A great rivalry but a monotonous one.
"It was an exciting football game, wasn't it?" UW-Whitewater Head Coach Lance Leipold said. "It was three quarters one way, and a fourth quarter to remember for us."(uwwsports.com) Wartburg dominated the first half but had to settle for field goals, Michael Bohlke kicking for of them for a 19-13 lead. In the third quarter the Knights started scoring touchdowns, Logan Schrader running it in from the 11 and threw 12 yards to Taylor Jacobsme to give Wartburg that 33-16 lead. It seemed like a glorious, program-making upset.
Then the Warhawks went to work. “Trailing 33-16 through three quarters, UW-Whitewater narrowed its deficit to two possessions on the second play of the fourth as junior running back Dennis Moore (Elgin, IL/Elgin) cut an outside run back to the inside and went untouched 57 yards to make it 33-23 with 14:44 on the clock…. On the second play of the next drive, the Knights (12-1) fumbled it back to the Warhawks on a botched handoff at the Wartburg 27-yard line. Senior defensive back Zach Nellis recovered to help swing the game for the Warhawks….One play after Behrendt stretched for a first down run on third and one, Behrendt connected with senior tight end Derric Junakin (Cudahy/Cudahy), who leaped inside the near pile-on for a 16-yard touchdown to make it 33-30 with 12:52 left.”
“Following a punt by the Knights, Moore and Behrendt led UW-Whitewater 89 yards on just eight plays as senior wide receiver Justin Howard (West Bend/Homestead) took a strike from Behrendt at the goal line and scampered in for a touchdown to give the Warhawks a four-point lead with 6:10 remaining. “ The Knights last two possession resulted in a punt and losing the ball on downs with four incomplete passes. Whitewater’s old friend, #3s MOUNT UNION have had an easy time of it this year: 58-7, 62-6, 63-7, 75-0, 62-0, 58-17, 74-7, 66-7, 59-3, 63-3, 67-0 – except when they have played #9 John Carroll. The Blue Streaks threw a scare into the Purple Raiders at the end of the regular season, losing 24-31. And they did it again in the D3 quarterfinals, losing again but only by 28-36. Mount Union took a 14-0 first quarter lead on a 13 yard pass from Kevin Burke to Roman Namdar and an 18 yard run from Logan Nemeth. Then came a wild five touchdown second quarter, three by John Carroll: a 2 yard run by Tommy Michals, a one yard pass from Mark Myers to Zach Strippy, (Zach Strippy?) after a Mount Union fumble and a75 yard bomb from Myers to Marshall Howell. Mount Union responded to this broadside with two scores of their own on throws from Burke to Sherman Wilkinson of 22 and 26 yards to make it 28-21 at halftime. But the Purple Raiders defense, #1 in the country, thanks to all those blow-outs, sacked Myers four times and held the Blue Streak to 48 yards in the third quarter. A bad snap on a punt gave Mount Union a safety and they drove 45 yards after the free kick for another Burke TD pass that made it 36-21. They tried for two to get the lead to 17 but a Burke pass failed. Myers found Strippy again from three yards out with 6:51 left and got the ball back once after that but punted it away and never got it back, (cue Millhouse). Mount Union led in total offense 408-386. Burke had 297 yards passing for 4 touchdowns, while Myers had more yards, 362 but fewer touchdowns, 3.
Last year Mount Union was rolling along, defending champs and ranked #1 when they faced (now #4) WESLEY in the quarterfinals. The Purple Raiders got off to a stunning 31-0 start in the first quarter and had to hold on for dear life to win 62-59. It was the first vulnerability the champs had show and they never seemed to recover from the scare, barely beating North Central 41-40 the next week and then getting steam-rolled by Whitewater 52-14 in the finals. The Raiders had our-scored their opposition 614-167 after that first quarter against Wesley and got out-scored by a total of 86-151 after that. Now they are really rolling at 774-109 but here comes Wesley again. The Wolverines are rolling along pretty well themselves at 664-132. These are two teams that love to run up scores and they will again try to do it to each other, as they did last year.
Wesley’s last victim was Upstate New York’s perennial representatives in the national playoffs, #7 Hobart, who once again failed to get past the quarterfinals. The Statesmen fell behind early, 0-10, hung in there through the second and third quarters but the Wolverines added on two insurance touchdowns in the final stanza. Wesley’s defense was too much for Hobart, who rushed for only 91 yards and passed for only 72 while Wesley had 02 yards total offense. Joe Callahan passed for 315 yards and 2 scores. The Statesmen are now 34-3 in the last three years, with all the losses in the playoffs.
#11 LINFIELD came east to take on #10 Widener but it was the Pride who looked jet-lagged in a 7-45 loss to the visitors. The gracious hosts provided their guests with three first quarter turnovers Linfield rolled up 409 yards to 173. Widener was 2 for 18 on third down conversions. Sam Riddle passed for 261 yards and 5 scores and was also his team’s leading rusher with 75 yards.
The semi-final match-ups:
LINFIELD (Ore) 11-1, (572-151), lost to Williamette 28-31, ranked #11, post season record: 37-21 (4 titles)
At
WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER 13-0, (538-135), Ranked #1 post season record: 41-7 (5 titles)
WESLEY (De) 12-1, (664-132), lost to Charlotte 33-38, ranked #5, post season record: 25-10 (0 titles)
At
MOUNT UNION (Ohio) 13-0, (774-109) ranked #3, post season record: 84-13 (11 titles)
Comments: These teams have won a total of 187 post season games and 20 championships between them Wesley doesn’t have a champion ship but they have been a very formidable team in recent years. I’ll be rooting for Linfield and Wesley, which will guarantee that we’ll get Whitewater-Mount Union IX.
