CLASS AA

Section 3’s Cicero-North Syracuse continued a season-long roll, crushing Section 4’s Elmira 57-14. During the on-line broadcast one of the commentators said the Elmira coach had asked his assistants to first show him the films of CNS’s close games. There weren’t any. There still aren’t:
C-NS turns on jets, crushes Elmira, 57-14, to earn spot in Class AA football state semifinals

But it’s entirely possible that there wasn’t anybody in Section 3 capable of challenging them. There are only 5 AA teams in Section 4 and they often don’t really have a playoff caliber team as their champ. Elmira was a 6-4 team. I think the Northstars are about to meet a team(s) that can take them on in fairly equal terms for the first time this season.

Section 6’s Lancaster shut out 7 time state champion Rochester Aquinas of Section 5 in a 9-0 defensive dual. The “Little Irish” could only generate 69 yards total offense:
Lancaster caps legendary weekend for Section VI, takes down Aquinas
Their victory clinched a sweep of Section 5 teams by Section 6. Both are typically powerhouses at all levels of the state tournament, so that was quite an achievement.

Defending state champion Troy of Section 1 beat four time champ New Rochelle of Section 1 17-14 on a last second field goal:
Football: New Rochelle falls to Troy again, this time on last-second FG
You gotta love the nicknames: The “Flying Horses” defeated the “Huguenots”. Troy will now play Section 9’s Newburgh Free Academy who had a bye.

The Semi-final match-ups:

Section 2- Troy 11-0 (481-109) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 2/276 States: 16-5 with 3 titles
Section 9- Newburgh Free Academy 8-2 (351-119) NYSSWA #17 MaxPreps 29/1253 States: 2-8 with 0 titles
No common opponents.

Section 3- Cicero-North Syracuse 11-0 (582-121) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 1/120 States: 1-0 with 0 titles
Section 6- Lancaster 11-0 (469-103) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 6/516 States: 1-2 with 0 titles
No common opponents.

Comments: You can almost hear the metal grinding as these powerhouses meet head-on. Newburgh is the only team with a loss, to Section 9 Class A champ Cornwall 28-31 and former state champ Monroe-Woodbury, 17-28, which they avenged in the sectional playoffs, 42-20. Nobody has come within 28 points of CNS at all, 23 points of Lancaster until Aquinas or 18 points of Troy before New Rochelle. Troy and Glen’s Falls of Class B are tied for the state’s longest winning streak with 24 games. We’re going to find out how good the Northstars really are, which both scares me and excites me.

CLASS A

Section 3’s Whitesboro, a team that suffered through injuries and three defeats but came on strong at season’s end, defeated Section 4’s Union-Endicott 28-7, the second year in a row the Warriors had conquered the Tigers, who had a key injury of their own:
http://www.pressconnects.com/story/...esboro-state-football-quarterfinal/853329001/

They will meet undefeated West Seneca West of Section 6 who beat Section 5’s Wilson Magnet of Rochester 40-22, behind a quarterback Matt Myers, who accounted for 5 scores:

Section 1’s Yorktown beat Section 9’s Cornwell 38-14. Tailback Brent Mahar ran for 205 yards and 3TDs for the winners:
Wilson Wildcats claw back but lose to West Seneca West in state quarterfinals
The will now play Section 2’s Burnt Hills-Balston Lake, who had a bye.

The semi-final match-ups:

Section 1- Yorktown 11-0 (397-120) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 9/632 States: 9-2 with 2 titles
Section 2- Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 10-0 (473-145) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 36/1675 States: 10-6 with 1 title
No common opponents.

Section 3- Whitesboro 8-3 (345-193) NYSSWA #11 MaxPreps 85/2935 States: 6-7 with 0 titles
Section 6- West Seneca West 11-0 (473-156) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 20/936 States: 1-0 with 0 titles
No common opponents.

Comments: NYSSWA’s #1 ranked Class A team is Garden City on Long Island, part of Section 8, which doesn’t take part in the state playoffs. Whitesboro is about to find out if they were an 11-0 team that had injuries or just a 8-3 team that got hot at the right time. The others have been powerhouses all season.

CLASS B

Homer was the dominant Class B team in Section 3, rather easily disposing of Cazenovia in the finals but, after taking an early lead, they couldn’t hold back perennial state super-power Chenango Forks, eventually going down 9-28:
Homer football ground down by Chenango Forks in 28-9 state playoff loss

Section 5’s Hornell’s attempt to return to power, (they won the state title from 2009-2011) was halted by Section 6: Cheektowaga, 28-6:
Warriors roll past Hornell 28-6 to advance to state semis

Defending state champs Glens Falls from Section 2 had all they could handle from Section 10’s Gouverneur but handle them they did, 28-26, to win their 24th game in a row:
http://poststar.com/sports/glens-fa...cle_106715fc-c3af-5158-80d1-9909b68d502e.html

Section 1’s Pleasantville was unpleasant to section 9’s Marlboro, beating them 32-22 by scoring 21 unanswered points to end the game:
http://www.recordonline.com/varsity...ish-for-marlboro-in-state-b-quarterfinal-loss

Section 1- Pleasantville 10-1 (327-130) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 28/1225 States: 2-2 with 3 titles
Section 2- Glens Falls 11-0 (411-131) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 14/793 States: 7-2 with 1 titles
No common opponents.

Section 4- Chenango Forks 11-0 (404-74) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 4/336 States: 29-10 with 5 titles
Section 6- Cheektowaga 10-1 (401-150) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 54/2166 States: 3-3 with 0 titles
No common opponents.

Comments: Pleasantville and Cheektowaga are formidable teams but Chenango Forks has a score to settle with Glens Falls who beat them last year. That defense might settle it.

CLASS C

Section 3’s Skaneateles won a wild one against defending state championship Newark Valley of Section 4, 42-41 behind quarterback Pat Hackler, who broke Greg Paulus’ state record for TD passes in a season with 46:

They will play Section 6’s Cleveland Hills, 38-20 victor over Section 5’s Caldonia-Mumford, a power house a generation ago, 38-20 behind 212 rushing yards and three scores, two of 91 and 60 yards, from Aaron Wahler:

Section 9’s Burke Catholic crushed Section 1’s Albertus Magnus 62-12. Albertus Magnus’s coach allowed as how “We didn’t play very well”:

Section 2’s Holy Trinity was too much for Section 10’s Ogdensburg 41-14, thanks to a 27 point run after giving up an early score and falling behind for the first time in two months:
https://dailygazette.com/article/2017/11/11/holy-trinity-football-roars-back-for-win

Semi-Final Match-ups:

Section 9- Burke Catholic 9-1 (440-165) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 51/2061 States: 2-3 with 0 titles
Section 2- Holy Trinity 10-1 (448-101) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 79/2958 States: 1-0 with 0 titles
No common opponents.

Section 3- Skaneateles 10-1 (497-189) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 38/1731 States: 1-1 with 0 titles
Section 6- Cleveland Hill 10-1 (432-128) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 98/3266 States: 2-5 with 0 titles
No common opponents.

Comments: Nobody here has ever won a state title before. Skaneateles just beat the defending champs and are the highest rated team by Max Preps.

CLASS D

Section 3 used to be a big power in Class D. West Canada won the first ever Section III state tournament title in 1997. Dolgeville won in 2000. The first and third titles of the Mike Hart Era at Onondaga were in Class D, (2001 and 2003). Weedsport won in 2004. Section 3 Class D champions beat their Section 4 counterparts 9 years in a row from 1996-2004. They’ve won once since. In recent years Tioga has terrorized our champs: Westmoreland 55-34 in 2011; Sandy Creek 54-13 in 2012; Herkimer 43-13 in 2013; Dolgeville 46-22 in 2014 and Sandy Creek again 50-14 in 2015. 17 time Section 3 champion Dolgeville, 10-0 (498-227) seemed like a formidable opponent for the Tigers this year. Not. The game was 0-46 after three quarters before the Blue Devils managed two fourth quarter scores and two point conversions to make the final somewhat more respectable: 46-16:
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...-tioga-too-much-for-dolgeville-in-46-16-loss/

Tioga will face Section 6’s Maple Grove, in the semis. The Red Dragons ran past Section 5’s Clyde-Savannah 61-28, rushing for over 450 yards:
http://www.democratandchronicle.com...s-loss-class-d-state-quarterfinals/853931001/

Defending state champ Cambridge from Section 2 rolled over Moriah from Section 7, 54-20, thanks to a 42-6 second half, (is that like a 40-5 second half?):
http://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Big-second-half-propels-Cambridge-football-in-12349211.php

Sections 1 or 9 both have exactly 2 Class D teams so their D teams have to play teams in other classes and/or sections to fill out their schedule, which makes the playoff pickings a bit slim. Section 1’s Tuckahoe actually had a decent record, 7-2) but 5-5 Millbrook of Section 9 beat them anyway in what turned out to be the closest Class D quarterfinal, 42-20:
http://www.recordonline.com/varsity/20171110/manfredi-millbrook-advance-to-state-class-d-semis

Section 9- Millbrook 6-5 (291-302) NYSSWA HM MaxPreps 528/12606 States: 2-4 with 0 titles
Section 2- Cambridge 11-0 (583-129) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 25/1195 States: 19-12 with 2 titles
No common opponents.

Section 4- Tioga 10-1 (453-163) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 43/1784 States: 8-4 with 1 title
Section 6- Maple Grove 10-1 (379-144) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 722/2629 States: 9-4 with 2 titles
No common opponents

Comments: I wouldn’t put my money on Millbrook, although they make good bread. Cambridge, the defending champ is the one team in the state which scored even more points than CNS. Tioga lost four straight semi-finals to Section 6 teams before breaking through in 2015 to win their state title, so they now know they can do this.
