Teams losing a quarter of their roster every year? Yay college sports. I’m struggling to stay engaged. It’s not a good development
To quote James Hetfield- Sad but true! The fanbases for the top teams (SEC, BIG) will continue to pack stadiums as they will continue to reap the benefits of the transfer portal and be competitive.
The rest of us? Mainly apathy from the fans. The split will come soon. The leftover teams can try to form something like college football used to be but how do you stop poaching of your best players? It will be a minor league to whatever super league the SEC/BIG becomes.
Everything has growing pains things will get betterTeams losing a quarter of their roster every year? Yay college sports. I’m struggling to stay engaged. It’s not a good development
Yep they are down to 12-16 players at this point. I'm guessing ALOT are going to end up at Ped St.I just seen a report stating Iowa state has 41 players in the transfer portal. This is just stupid at this point. I like the mayhem but this has gone too far. They need to change the rules or I’m even close to checking out.
Everyone says they're getting disengaged, but TV ratings continue to set new records every year.Teams losing a quarter of their roster every year? Yay college sports. I’m struggling to stay engaged. It’s not a good development
The crazy money seems to be virtually guaranteed for everyone except the players. I dont see coaches, TV execs or others crying poverty.I actually like how things are playing out because kids who keep jumping into the portal are learning the hard way that the “crazy money” isn’t guaranteed, and even when it is, it doesn’t mean they’ll play. Just look at the running back from Tulane who transferred to Oregon last year—one of the top portal prospects—and he hasn’t even sniffed the field. Many players who enter the portal don’t end up finding a real home, which is why, as Fran said, this will eventually slow down. Multi-year contracts will start becoming the norm, more regulations are coming, and it just needs a season or two. You can’t keep pampering these kids; if you want to make a grown-man decision, you have to deal with the consequences.
Gambling drives ratings in my opinion.Everyone says they're getting disengaged, but TV ratings continue to set new records every year.
To quote Pete Weber: "Hate me or love me. You still watched."
This system drives UP the value of coaches because they are THE continuity for a program (if they earn it and keep earning it).The crazy money seems to be virtually guaranteed for everyone except the players. I dont see coaches, TV execs or others crying poverty.
yup. the percentage of revenue from college sports dedicated to the players is still a fraction of what it is for professional leagues. There are fair reasons why but nobody likes to talk about the explicit benefits of the current system -- that is football and basketball subsidize a bunch of non rev sports. At some point, football and basketball just need to break away and be their own thing. The crazy money seems to be virtually guaranteed for everyone except the players. I agree fully, however there needs to be guardrails. I am seriously concerned about the integrity of college athletics as a whole, that might seem preposterous to somebody like seriously buddy where have you been But honestly it is not sustainable. What about academic surveillance, progression. The college experience has significant and massive beneficial implications on so many populations and socio demographic Stratas, I have concern in relation to what occurs with hard work and an actual college degree potentially is going to get lost, especially with all of the transfers and inability to complete curriculum. I hardly even hear this talked about. It is an amazing amount of work but so worth it, trust me I know.I actually like how things are playing out because kids who keep jumping into the portal are learning the hard way that the “crazy money” isn’t guaranteed, and even when it is, it doesn’t mean they’ll play. People don’t mention it enough but I bet more than 50% of all this movement is driven by agents and hangers-on. They’re the ones who win at the expense of the players and universities. Working through adversity and change is one of the most important aspects of the college age years. But that doesn’t help other people make money and gain clout. So there’s always people in these athletes’ ears telling them there is a pot of gold at the end of a different rainbow. As a fan, sometimes we’re on the positive side and other times we’re on the negative side.It is just musical chairs for the majority of these players. Outside of QB, which players are really making out? Even financially? And do most teams really make out? For the most part it is just a circle of player movement.
I think the best option for these schools is to have U23 sporting clubs. Then you can sign players up to 5 years. If they want to leave, then another team has to buy them out (including the NFL teams). At least you get something back for your investment in the player.
If a kid wants to take classes they can at the employee rate, but they are not required to do so.
Yep time to put the NCAA out to pasture. It’s a complete joke. The fact this situation exists is a testament to lack of good leadership in the NCAA (amongst other things).
This is actually one of the scenarios I’ve always thought should be allowed. If a coach leaves a school, players that went to that school to play for that coach shouldn’t be stuck there and allowed to leave as well without any penalties (e.g. sitting out a year under the old transfer rules).I just seen a report stating Iowa state has 41 players in the transfer portal.
