Post Brooklyn Beatdown

I think the conversation about how much time Red gets comes with the recognition that a #15 frosh class coming in next year isn’t the solution. Those kids are ranked lower than Freeman, and we’re seeing that freshmen aren’t the key in games like this. The other thing I wonder about is the usage/bench/depth situation. We will likely have defections and attrition from the current roster, but those we try to recruit from the portal will see that there’s a ‘visual illogic’ to who gets minutes and who gets DNPs. Might make it difficult to convince guys to sign up for that.

Do we keep Red if we don’t make the tourney? Does his recruiting class save him?
This is just so disappointing right now.
No. His poor coaching had us almost lose to LeMoyne Colgate and Youngstown. Refuses to play the best PG on the team. Wasting a great forward group of Donnie Jayre and Lampkin. I think he's held us back all 5 games.

Will need quite the miracle to make the NCAAs now. That wasn't a very good TT team. We would have to finish in the top 5 of the ACC to sniff the tournament this year. I just dont see that happening with what we got. Its sad but this is just where the program is these days, irrelevant.

JB played too few guys and Red brought in too many of equal ability, and seems married to one who frankly shouldn't play.
Talent wise, we feel like one of those weird Boston College teams that has like a weird center and a bunch of guys who can’t shoot but play ymca ball….overall, simply not Syracuse level guys.

not gonna crap on their effort though, just not talented enough

Precisely. The portal is the only way to get good quickly, unless you are Duke and get NBA talent out of high school. Expecting White and Anthony to elevate this team to a top 5 ACC team next year is bonkers to me.

I think we have ingredients to make a run on ACC. Should be in top 7 and a bubble team.

I just don't see it. I see a team that plays hard but when it is on the court they look lost. Lots of standing around on both sides of the court. No rotations on defense and a ton of ball watching on offense. We also lack the talent at the most important position in college basketball which is the point guard. We don't have an on court leader.

We were in it and doing well... frustrating to watch that opportunity slip away.

Sad…to go 0 for 2 in NYC in a pretty weak field. Both games were there for the taking and we couldn’t get it done.

First, it wasn't a "beat down". Did you see our early season tournament last year?? We lost both games by about 20 points, and were never in either game.

We have played much better as a team these last 2 1/2 games. Red is not choosing the right guys at the right times, but he seems more willing to try thing, like Majstorovic and Moore to close the game vs. Texas Tech, and using Naheem in the first half vs. Texas.

Carlos should be done starting. Cuffe MUST play at least 10 minutes a game. This is SO OBVIOUS. I know he has to manage relationships, but I think he's maybe a little "too" concerned about having the players "on board" with what he's doing. He needs to pull some players when they are stinking out the joint. I mean, come on, you're a coach. SO, COACH.

Tonight was on Red. That Taylor-Moore-Carlos lineup killed us in the 2 minutes they were in. I know JJ can’t go 40 every night but have to figure out the rotation ASAP. We’re not talented enough to overcome self inflicted wounds.

Yes, that's right. I was thinking that JJ was in there for that stretch but he wasn't. And then of course the announcer said "where's the offense going to come from with this lineup?"

I'm more positive on this team after the 2 losses than the 3 wins. Both Texas and TT are solid teams who could make the tournament and we had our chances to win both games. Lampkin can't play back-to-back games and it hurt us. Little of Davis in the second half. Autry has to figure it out the player rotation quickly. Freeman is hurting us on the offensive end right now and is still depending too much on his athleticism on the defensive end. If he improves over the course of the season he could be a monster by the end. And let's face it. Bell has to play for us to win and we have to accept his lapses.

Yes you cant have Lampkin and JJ out of the game at the same time. It will never work.

Basic basketball competencies. We don’t have them. Sad to say that, and that these things are exposed so easily against teams not even in the top 25. As much as I like Red and Griff and appreciate an alum staff, it’s just a continuation of a bad trend line, with no representations of evolution. We can maybe hang hopes on small improvements in individual commitments to defense, but in general, the fundamentals are lacking.

Not saying Red is a Calhoun or a K, but I think it’s a little early to draw big conclusions on the season.

This is a deep team and could still do good things as they gel and other offensive catalysts emerge to support JJ.
