Post Brooklyn Beatdown

Tired excuse. Bell is basically the only hold over that plays minutes.
Oh that all time great recruiting class that SU had a couple years ago? lol

I was unenthused about the Autry hire and remain so but the state of the program was pretty damn low when he took over.

I know I’m in the minority, but I’m kind of feeling a little bit better about the rest of the season than I did before we got to Brooklyn. Obviously we don’t know how good Texas Tech and Texas will be, but we clearly played better against those two teams than the three little pigs that we nearly lost to at home.
Carlos brings absolutely nothing to the table. Red needs to recognize that and play either Choppa or Taylor. JJ can bring the ball up just as well as Carlos does. Tonight was Carlos’s best game and he was still awful.
Donnie had some very tough moments in this game, but you don’t have to be genius to see that the talent is there. I’m thinking that he and Choppa will emerge and continue to improve dramatically as the season goes on. And Petar is basically what we were told he was. He and Taylor have roles on the team as glue guys who can come in and play hard.
There were lapses, but our defense in Brooklyn was considerably better than the first three games. I think this team can win some games this year which I was not sure about after the first three games.

After the first three games I wasn’t sure if we were awful - well we definitely are not awful and played a lot better defensively - offense is a such a struggle because we are ok but not great anywhere but we cannot play with Carlos - we looked a lot better than the first three games - hopefully we keep playing better and sneak into the tournament - that would be a real good season

Simple question, who constructed the team?
You get what you can afford these days. Until NIL funds grow, we’re not getting difference makers from the portal. He cleaned house and got rid of weak pieces. It will be another new roster next year. We need help all over the floor.

Will need quite the miracle to make the NCAAs now. That wasn't a very good TT team. We would have to finish in the top 5 of the ACC to sniff the tournament this year. I just dont see that happening with what we got. Its sad but this is just where the program is these days, irrelevant.
NCAA’s ?? That’s funny. I’m worried we won’t win 10 games. Show me a path to 10 wins. We need to prepare ourselves for an abysmal season.

Red will get a pass this year because of his incoming recruiting class. He needs to find a way to fill out his roster with quality portal transfers to fill out his roster and provide support and leadership to the young players. If he can’t do that by end of next season and deliver a NCAAT appearance, he’ll be out of a job and we’ll be looking for a new coach.

This year is looking bleak. All of Red’s eggs are in the 2025-26 squad’s basket.

I just don't see it. I see a team that plays hard but when it is on the court they look lost. Lots of standing around on both sides of the court. No rotations on defense and a ton of ball watching on offense. We also lack the talent at the most important position in college basketball which is the point guard. We don't have an on court leader.
This is a very common point of posters, but I see very little standing around - I just don't see it.

Personally, I think the team has progressed with each game it has played. They are looking betteron defense than I have seen in the past. Remember , we have several new guy's.Lets give them time to get to know each other. It's a long season. Have some faith. Go Orange. !!!!!

Sure, but I don’t buy it. You’re telling me Texas Tech can afford better players than us? It’s talent evaluation where we’re lacking. For some reason our coaches love one dimensional guys. These other teams find functional role players.

We’ve heard this several times in recent memory and it never happened. So, we will win more than 10 games.

So in other words he was left with nothing. Look, not an Autry fan but JB left the program in pretty bad shape when he departed the scene.
JB sucked for a decade. Red hasn’t shown the ability to create a roster any better than the putrid JB years. It’s a continuation of the JB slide without a 2-3 zone. Same program flaws with the assistant coach as head coach.

I'm more positive on this team after the 2 losses than the 3 wins. Both Texas and TT are solid teams who could make the tournament and we had our chances to win both games. Lampkin can't play back-to-back games and it hurt us. Little of Davis in the second half. Autry has to figure it out the player rotation quickly. Freeman is hurting us on the offensive end right now and is still depending too much on his athleticism on the defensive end. If he improves over the course of the season he could be a monster by the end. And let's face it. Bell has to play for us to win and we have to accept his lapses.
I think the biggest concern is with the acc “down” again there are dwindling needle moving opportunities. We’re now in a spot where we need to split Tennesse/Maryland without slipping up in any other non-conference games.

Do we keep Red if we don’t make the tourney? Does his recruiting class save him?
This is just so disappointing right now.
Red will be here next year.

I’m seeing only 3 more “lock” wins this season. Based on our play vs our early slate of “cupcakes”, I’m not even sure about those locks. There’s a bunch of guaranteed losses in our schedule, starting with the beat down we’re going to get in Knoxville. This season is looking pretty bad. Only 10 wins is definitely a plausible outcome.

I’d say we have to win them both. One quality OOC win isn’t cutting it.

Pretty much agree with you. Just pointing out the task was made all that more difficult by JB. But hey he enjoyed coaching his sons. And his comment about having his best SU recruiting class with Mintz and Co was a certifiably insane statement.

So the positive is there was clearly progress in games 4 and game 5 ... at least analytically on the defensive side. So maybe there is another step or two we can take (but I'm not counting on it too heavily).

I'm sure hardly anybody is thinking our progress in the last few games means we could become NCAA bubble contender. But just in case anyone does (and to be clear its not me), we have already hit the negative trifecta.
a) The ACC is not helping us at all in OOC -- they are doing bad -- will impact Q1 and Q2 opp's. We will need a very good ACC win loss because of this.
b) We need quality wins in OOC because the ACC stinks - two blown opportunities already.
c) Our individual NET has taken a pounding because of games 1-3.

We'll steal a few wins in the ACC. The league just isn't that good.

I think we will surpass 10 but I’m having a hard time believing we will get to 15. We will stumble into a few wins here and there. I see us starting 4-4 which once again is abysmal. Notre Dame’s guards I fear will torch us after we get blown out in Knoxville. It’s going to be a rough 2 weeks.

Highly unlikely we have any quality OOC wins this year.

You absolutely can. This is 2024 where coaches bring in whole new teams in an off season. This is year 2. That’s 2 portal classes and Red’s recruits. Guys, this isn’t 2005 college basketball. If you think JBs last roster has any effect on this years team I don’t really know what to tell you because it’s delusional.
The delusional part is you thinking the SU brands carries the same weight it used to carry. That recruiting class was wildly overrated and necessitated a complete overhaul. Btw those fellas are really lighting it up so far in their new homes, eh?
