Postgame Thoughts... Clemson

Might explain why he thinks we have great shooters.

Oh, we have great “shooters”.

They shoot a great amount.

We don’t have any great “makers”.
Not even good “makers”.
Mostly below average to poor “makers”.

The game is easy when you make shots!

... which is why we’re mostly FUBAR this year, against any decent defensive teams.

It started for me when JB screwed Hop over
He didn’t screw Hop.
Again the school tried to use JB’s retirement as a way to get leniency.
JB had a right to call his retirement.
He wasn’t getting that.
Hop got put in a crap situation.

He made it extremely clear that he didnt want to adhere to what the Chancellor and him agreed to.

The chancellor and AD thought throwing JB to the wolves would get us leniency from the NCAA.
It didn’t do that.
So why force the HC to retire before he wanted too. Hop could have stayed and he gets the job. Hop didn’t get screwed instead he found a way for everyone to be happy.
Now since Hop left JB hasn’t done a great job that stuff is fair game but just try to be fair.

JB did make it tough for Hopkins. Hop didn't want some guys we recruited and did want others. Not unreasonable if you are taking over the team. But JB didn't go along with Hopkins. That sent Hopkins a message. Jb got what he wanted. Hopkins didn't get what he wanted.

Regardless how we got here, at the time it seemed like everyone landed on their feet when Hop got the UWashington job, and we had these last few seasons of JB.
Now it’s looking like all we did was kick the can down the road, and the chickens are coming home to roost. The transition will likely be harder now than if we’d just done it 5 yrs ago.

How would JB react if he was told he needs to expect half the attendance he's used to at the games?

We already do. Even before CoVid, we've gotten use to crowds in the teens when we once averaged 29,000 a game.

1989-90: average Dome attendance 29,918

2019-20: 21,704. And that's tickets sold, not fannies in the seats. In the 80's everyone came to the games.

Yes the product is not as exciting, but you also have to factor in a much better high definition at home experience with all or most of the games on tv.

Not to put too fine a point on it, because our defense yesterday was (as per usual) abhorrent, and 19pts at halftime can never be excused, but Clemson has absolutely smothered really good offensive teams this season at Littlejohn (excluding the uva game, coming off covid pause):
Maryland 51pts
Alabama 56
Fla St 67
Louisville 50
UNC 50

They are legit one of the best defensive teams in the country, I'd definitely put them right on par w UVA this year.

That loss did resemble our loss to UVA a lot.

Just watched JB‘s press conference from Clemson. Two things bothered me. First he criticized everybody but buddy. I don’t need him to kill buddy like some people on this board seem to but omitting him the way he is playing is glaring and unfair to the other players. Second it also bothered me that he thought JG3’s second-half was of any import. Those were pure garbage time points with absolutely no pressure and the last thing we need is JG3 listening to these comments and feeling emboldened to fire up more shots.

It's kinda funny what we're doing the rotations.

How NEXT LEVEL bad must Braswell and Woody must be at practicing?

I mean, in blowout wins we need to put Buddy at SF to get him minutes when he's not playing well. In blowout losses we need to have Kadary play some SF so Buddy doesn't have to come out when he's not playing well.

Conversely, how NEXT LEVEL great must Buddy be at practice? He even wins out at SF - and I doubt he even practices there a ton.

I don't know how we fix this when someone is so much greater at practicing than everyone else. :(

I respect your opinion but disagree. JB made it painfully obvious that he didn’t want to retire, both in words and deeds. And, I’m sorry, but no one gets a job for life. He was damn lucky not be joining Gross out the door after the second set of violations.

But we are where we are. Things will not get any better until he retires. So until then, we’ll all have to live with the decisions made.

I know. But we have still drawn big numbers for the big games. We had 35,600 when we played Duke in 2019. Imagine if we had 18,000 for those games and 9,000 for the games against nobodies.

Duke will not draw 18,000 at the Dome.

The difference is that you want the fans coming to see your team, not the opposition.

Yup. Those weeknight games vs Providence weren’t on TV in the eighties

If we keep heading in the direction we are now, do you think we'll still draw 35,000? I don't think that many people will show up if they don't think we can compete.

The ACC has nothing to do with our recruiting.
Justin Champagnie said he was a huge Syracuse fan and is from Brooklyn. We didn’t offer him a scholarship.

Monte Morris wanted to come to SU and paid his own way to come to our elite camp and we didn’t offer him a scholarship.

Jalen Brunson was told on an unofficial visit to SU he wasn’t a fit and not offered a scholarship.

The ACC has done nothing to our recruiting. It’s been our own fault.

ZONE ZONE ZONE ZONE ... it’s rotted out this program .. I’m not even talking about it as a defensive strategy .. it’s probably a fine defense in the appropriate setting .. but when EVERYTHING you do as a program is based on catering to it .. from who you recruit .. who will ACCEPT your offers ... how it effects your stamina ... depth ... conditioning program ... it’s like fighting with one hand tied behind your back ...

There is a reason NO other major team uses this D as an exclusive system year after year after year .. Duke used it when it had to ... Baylor fiddles with it .. Beilen did ... but we are basically “the zone program “

And you have to ask yourself how much of the culture that follows, is limiting the program ?
