Postgame Thoughts... Clemson

The two final fours didn't represent the seasons, did they?
Who are the two top 20s? In what time span?
Who the hell is Matt Park? Why does his opinion matter any more than that of the random schmuck in this forum?

I think a majority of this forum could talk Syracuse hoops better than him, unless he’s REALLY dumbing it down for some “bonehead mass audience”.

We don’t have any top 20 recruits. And if we did, they’d only play if they were a forward, anyway.

Love the game plan. Love the effort.

With covid I was just hoping we would have a season . I never dreamed we would have this much turmoil from within the fanbase. Just with all things considered I never could have seen this shitshow coming.

You know it's coming.

Of course, he will ignore (1) how shtty his son played...AGAIN; (2) how almost all of JG's points came during garbage time; and (3) with his YMCA starting backcourt in the game, we went down 10 about 4:00 into the game, never to recover.
Everyone played bad though. Not just buddy

No, WE can't.

You need to call John Wildhack with your opinion.
Speaking of Wildhack would love to hear his thoughts on the current situation.

You could be 45 and expect that.
I’m 23 and I expect that. There’s no reason programs like Wisconsin, Iowa, Oklahoma, and whoever else should be tourney teams every year and we can’t.

There’s so much talent around us. If we only recruited from Rochester and Toronto we could be a top 25 team every season.

We’re consistently getting big-boyed in every facet. It’s frustrating enough with a coach who won’t publicly take any blame we don’t need university pawns trying to spin bs.

All due respect, but Wisconsin, Iowa, & Oklahoma are not good examples of teams that make the tournament every year.
Let’s not let hyperbole get in the way of demonstrable facts. We’ve not been classic “Syracuse” for a few years, and the overall trend hasn’t been good, but our program is not in the toilet.
And yes, on one note i will agree w/ Matt Park, in that our fanbase is not used to big time adversity and somewhat spoiled.
This transition is following the predictable pattern of other legendary coaches/programs. It’s likely to get worse for a minute, not better.

The ACC has nothing to do with our recruiting.
Justin Champagnie said he was a huge Syracuse fan and is from Brooklyn. We didn’t offer him a scholarship.

Monte Morris wanted to come to SU and paid his own way to come to our elite camp and we didn’t offer him a scholarship.

Jalen Brunson was told on an unofficial visit to SU he wasn’t a fit and not offered a scholarship.

The ACC has done nothing to our recruiting. It’s been our own fault.

Every team makes recruiting mistakes. Our problem is that we are striking out on our targets. We are a nobody in the ACC and we were a big cheese in the Big East.

These mistakes are why we have struggled.
We haven’t had a PG from Ennis till we got Richmond this year.

We could have had these kids and our seasons would have been a lot better.

The ACC haa nothing to do with our situation.

SWC broke down the numbers last week we are the 4th or 5th best ACC overall since we joined.
That isn’t bad. Our problems are our own doing.

I love when people talk about others being owed things as if it's a one way street. He's right, the fans aren't owed anything. On the flip side, the university, basketball team, and coach are not owed anything either. Not a packed dome. Not ratings on TV. Not people calling in to a call in show. Not merchandise sales. Be careful, Matt. Your job depends upon people caring about a product. The expectations of the fanbase were established by the prior performance of the coach. You're essentially telling fans to lower expectations. How would JB react if he was told he needs to expect half the attendance he's used to at the games?

Ifs a bad comment from Park for sure.
If fans shouldn’t expect the NCAA tournament why would the fans be as passionate.
It’s just stupid to say what he did.
We don’t expect to be a NC contender but missing the tournament 4 times in 7 years isn’t a spoiled fanbase.

I do think we expect to be an occasional NC contender, but, again, that is based on prior performance. We have had a team able to contend for a NC once every 10 years or so and, prior to are current swoon, consistently make sweet 16's and elite 8's. I think expecting to compete with the upper tier of the conference during the season and consistently making at least sweet 16's are realistic expectations based on what the program has been for most of 40 years.

I would hope JB and the AD would want fans to expect that. If they don't, what exactly do they want people to get excited about?

When does the resentment start

agree, if you are going to play 2-3 zone every minute of the season, it should be a three-quarter court 2-2-1 zone press into a 2-3.

It's a conservative press, it doesn't give up lay-ups unlike the embarrassing trunk monkey 1-2-1-1 full court which is an emergency press.

with the 2-2-1 maybe you get some steals, but by the time they get settled they have 18 seconds to test the zone.

It makes too much sense, but also probably too much coaching energy.
Very good points AND you can get aggressive with it and force quick shots (which most good pressing teams are really trying to do is get you to take a quick out of character shot anyway not actually desperately trying to steal the ball)

Expectations matter. People in Syracuse don't show up to games just out of loyalty to the program. It's the pro team in town and they will only come in large numbers for a good product. We're not Penn State football. Park's comments show that after all these years he still doesn't understand this town or this program.

Yup. Agreed. And there’s zero reason why expectations should be “lowered”. In fact, they should be raised. Sanctions are over. UNC and Duke are down. When that happens we should be thinking the league is ours for the taking.

Instead we’re getting the crap kicked out of us by friggin Clemson, and watching Florida State and Virginia take over as the other top programs in the league.
