Preseason Camp Thread

Shrader is a leader, he can buy time, and they have to respect his running. DR A is going to scheme around his strengths, Beck is going to improve all aspects of his throwing and the kids going to crush it.

I would think, with a "decent" OL...a star RB...and a QB who's a threat in addition...that should open up some "underneath" routes that we haven't really seen since 2018

It could be unfortunate that we don't have a "blocking/catching" TE this year (or do we?)

Think our slot receivers could feast on those routes too. Erv Phillips used to rack up catches in bunches.

I hope this is a case of DV going to the coaches and say "Hey, I want to do whatever it takes to get on the field, even if that means moving to another position."

It could also be a case of, "These coaches showed at UVa that they creatively use QBs in tandem in trick capacities out of unusual formations, and this is the way they are getting a second QB on the field."

I think its probably both. Villari tried his hand at QB all through fall ball and realizes where he is on the depth chart. Now time to have fun moving forward at the "Football Player" position or what appears like they are just calling the Flex Oustide Wide Receiver position. He could be really good there once he get some experience in route running. From his past highlights we can see how dynamic he is running the ball at his size. He's similar to Shrader running the ball. Would be nice to have someone who plays that position that could throw the ball once in a while. I'm assuming Gadsden can't very well or Alford if he will play there at all. I would think Pena gets some snaps there as he is a WR who has great RB skills, just not as big as some other dudes for blocking duties.

both the highlights showed the WRs getting good releases and then the QBs making poor throws on the deep balls to wide open guys.. thats the story of our last few seasons.. simple throws we dont complete and we dont get enough easy shots because the oline would break down..

I do see more better throws on the shorter stuff which is at least a step forward.

LB's appear to be torching some of our OL in pass rushing drills, especially near the end. And Blech (#63) didn't appear to be too fast or 100% on that rep after coming back from being ill.

I think it helps that in that drill there is some indecision on the oline and tons of space to the LB to run thru.
In a game the windows get smaller and the oline helps each other a bit more.. I hope..

There shouldn't be any indecision by the OL as there is only one choice on who they are blocking. But agreed about there not being more wash or stray action in the pass rushers way. Just didn't make me feel great about the pass pro. I think most guys getting beat were not starters however.

But trying to block LB's in open space isn't an easy task for O linemen.

I haven’t seen him play enough football to know anything. But he sure looks like he would be a natural TE.

Doesn't look like a very realistic drill. The lbs are using speed rush inside against a single OL. In real game situations, there isn't going to be that kind of room and space inside to do that; and the other guys aren't going to be just standing around either.

Rush more than the blockers available... Tail as old as the forward pass. Problem is our QB that can 6 any run if you don't bring him down... Blitzing Shrader is a gamble at best, better to shadow with 1 or 2

There's one highlight in there of C-DRW throwing one that hits Hatcher in stride. He beat Wilson on the move. I can't tell if the ball was supposed to stay outside or not, or if Hatcher just cuts inside to haul it in. But Hatcher looked like he had wheels.

If you throw long they have to respect it, often get PI's and if its picked usually field position is OK...

"We want to get him in some special teams stuff," Babers said. "He's an athletic guy. See if we can get him on the field at some other positions besides still playing quarterback."

I don’t want to take away from this year’s team, which I believe has a different feel to it. I’m always optimistic, even more so this year. I can’t wait for Louisville, and after that, I really do feel like we’ll have a puncher’s chance just about anywhere. Very interested to see how we come out Day 1.

As far as that Illinois squad… Remember when 1/2 the board wanted to replace ED with him bc he had pretty gold stars next to his name? That was fun. Even our coach toyed with it, which is pretty staggering in hindsight. But he’s still a great kid, and I hope he finds success this year, GL Illinois..
I'm sure the same ones will be calling for CDW to take over after Shrader makes a couple bad reads or throws.
Yeah think Dungey felt he was untouchable for a bit there and lost focus.

When TD came in and gave that performance, it brought ED right back.
Tommy was a cure for ED not getting up for showtime. Could've parlayed that into some Cialis NIL opportunity

Coaches interview is interesting, states that essentially all the starters are etched in stone, and the positions with two good options will split time.

Sooooo to me that means those Saturday scrimmage highlights are pretty telling. And I know I’ve been riding this train all week, but Hatcher and Gadsden look to be etched in stone as a starter. Courtney Jackson and devaugh cooper also starters I say (if we are talking 4 WR set). And we should expect to see rotating in - Isaiah Jones, CJ Hayes, Peña, Alford, Adams, Queely.

Wow we have some talent there I think…I am pretty high on this WR group.
