Preseason Camp Thread

I hope so.. I want to see more throws to the guy he thinks should be open and less to the guy he is trying to find open.. another yr of throwing under his belt and hopefully an offense that the QB and the WRs trust more. Last year too many routes seemed disconnected.
Agree

I’m not happy about piling on but he was a great guy and a great disappointment as a player.

He was occasionally good, consistently awful.
not that it means anything but I watched the Illini spring game on B10 Network in April and TD looked very good in that game

Anybody old enough to remember Sonny Jorgensen quarterbacking the (former) Redskins? He basically shot-putted the ball. But, it was accurate enough.

Sonny ate the shotput.

No disrespect to you. That game didn’t count.

TD. had some moments but they were few and far between when we needed something clutch or creative he generally couldn’t make it happen plus he was doubly crippled by a weak offensive line whose ineptitude he anticipated by folding early.
I remember the Rutgers game last year when we were down by two scores and he’s throwing a 4 yard out on third and 12 in the 4th quarter. It’s like he wasn’t even trying. Just never any urgency with the guy. Against Clemson in 2019 we intercepted deep in our territory, the next play he throws an inexplicable interception.
He’s a fine individual but he should not have been given the keys to the car. I know that’s all we had, but we should never have put all our eggs in that basket.
So much is predicated on the performance of the quarterback. Look at the Giants with Doug Jones the last couple of years. Millions of dollars spent on scouting and salaries and schemes and he’s very good but he’s just not great and consequently the team suffered.

Actually, Doug Jones spent his last couple of years pitching for the A’s, which are right across the Bay from the Giants, so that’s an easy mistake to make. Especially since he retired 20 years ago. :p

All true. But in that artificial and controlled environment he looked good. It seems like TD looks good in these situations (7 on 7, etc.) but when the chaos and speed of a real game occurs is when he breaks down. He did not get good protection at SYR and could not improvise, thus he was replaced by Shrader who made something out of nothing by taking off and running like Dungey so often did. TD needed a good pass protect to succeed and we did not have it to the extent he needed to excel. We'll see what happens at Illinois.

That’s true. Maybe a better system with better protection at Illinois will be the key. We’ll see.

I texted my nephew about DeVito today. He’s a 2011 U of I grad. He said that he expects the Illini to have a decent OL and that they’d mostly focus on running the ball. I told him to be wary of who he may run into on the message boards.

I'm not a betting man; and I'm sure that SOS factors into this, but I'd lay money that both will rate higher than those numbers.

It’s hard for TD to rate much lower, so based on that I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up higher at seasons end. But I’m not expecting him to be impressive as a whole at the end of season.

I don’t want to take away from this year’s team, which I believe has a different feel to it. I’m always optimistic, even more so this year. I can’t wait for Louisville, and after that, I really do feel like we’ll have a puncher’s chance just about anywhere. Very interested to see how we come out Day 1.

As far as that Illinois squad… Remember when 1/2 the board wanted to replace ED with him bc he had pretty gold stars next to his name? That was fun. Even our coach toyed with it, which is pretty staggering in hindsight. But he’s still a great kid, and I hope he finds success this year, GL Illinois..

I still hate myself as I was one of the guys hoping it happened. My main reasoning though was ED was hurt shoulder wise. Something was off and then NCS game and he looked like a million bucks. kid had the biggest heart I ever seen and still feel bad about my wanting him replaced.

We’d seen a lot of ED and while electric, had his flaws. We knew his ceiling and floor pretty well. New player - looks like he can throw better than ED? I’m not surprised we thought about TD as maybe a higher ceiling. Obviously now that looks ridiculous

Gadsden, Hatcher Good.
I Zaprudered that film pretty closely. Of course, that was yesterday and I have slept since.

Yes, Gadsden got one of the long catches.

Nice to see Shrader consistently throwing spirals. The strength of his arm appears to be much improved. I have seen him throw the ball accurately on the run a lot, which given the recent history of our OL, is a very good thing.

Saw Jaquez with another sack. Not knowing anything (I don't), just watching these clips, he looks like he might be our best pass rusher.

Saw Enrique Cruz playing RT with Berg at LT. They are continuing to at least experiment with this. That lineup had Vet at center and Ilaoa at RG (I couldn't see him but assume Ellis was the LG; he and Berg seem to be the only players who have clearly won starting jobs at a position right now).

Pena had a long reception. I think he was banged up to start preseason but it appears he is coming on strong.

Agree with others that it is weird how little we have seen Queeley in the snippets of practice that have been released. Not much CJ Hayes either. We have seen some film of Alford and Jackson. Cooper has shown up regularly. Adams seems to be appearing a lot more these days (I think he was dinged up for a bit too). Didn't see Donovan Brown do anything here but I have in other clips. Hatcher and Gadsden seem to show up a lot. Pretty consistently.

Does it mean anything? I think so. Don't see the staff continually having the video staff edit out plays by certain players.

Really missing Fan Fest or some kind of open practice right now. I really want to see these guys play.

I remember legit being on the fence about it. Hindsight it’s obvious that ED was and always was the right call. But, Tommy flashed promise that year. In reality it was the fact that no one had tape on him to know his flaws. Once DCs could gameplan for him it was obvious how they handled him. Pressure him to hell and make him improvise…. It won’t go well.

Flashed? He won two games.
