PS: Syracuse football QBs Eric Dungey, Tommy DeVito set to compete (spring preview)

That article got me juiced. Hope springs eternal, yada yada yada.

Looking forward to Spring practice reports.

Really excited to have depth. No matter what happens - we can weather the storm of one going down waaaaaayyyyy better than in years past.

It will be really important that both Tommy and Eric handle the competition in a "team first" way. Too many pitfalls otherwise.

This is going to sound weird but reading that I thought to myself that the chances of TD ever playing here are probably zero. He will lose the QB competition and then be in one with Amie the following year

A healthy Dungey can take us to the Promised Land - a bowl. But so far he hasn't finished out one of his 3 seasons. With TD in the wings he knows he'll play some this year and be given the keys to the team for possibly 3 seasons if Chance Amie doesn't exceed all expectation. It's just the cost of doing business. If he transfers he sits a year an is no longer the Golden Boy which he's become.

Great to read he "torched" the 1st team defense in running the scout team. Sometimes a great player has to wait. I think he has the understanding and character to do that in the likely event he doesn't beat out ED. It's a First World kind of problem...an embarassment of riches.

This is going to sound even weirder but i’m thrilled about this situation. Competition brings out best in everyone. Nice to be in this position again

Anyone know how Devito did last year? I feel like the whispers about McNabb in spring of 1995 were that he was gonna be special. Do we know if this is the case with Devito?

"But make no mistake: DeVito is impressing behind the scenes, by many accounts. He torched the first-team defense when he moved to scout team late last year."

Same could be said for parents too.

funny how actually reading the linked article might answer some questions.

I see that but i want to know if anyone has seen him on here and can say that he has the "look" to be the next great SU QB. I'm not buying anything coach speak wise.

"By many accounts" means Stephen spoke to players on the team. I highly doubt a coach would tell a beat reporter that

Im one of Dungey’s biggest fans but it would not surprise me in the least if Devito’s taking near half the snaps or more by the acc schedule. This kid’s the real deal. Dungey’s a leader and a gamer, he’ll maintain his spot if he improves his throws and early down decision making.

There will be skeptics Re: TD until he shows on the field... but by all other means of evaluation: he’s going to be really really good in this system.
Completely agree with one caveat...the OL needs to significantly improve.

Otherwise, we all have to hope that TD can buy time with his feet and improvise (one of ED's greatest attributes) long enough to use his strong arm. Personally, I think TD is a way better athlete than most think and should be up to the task when his time comes.

Remember, sitting in the wings is Chase Amie, a highly rated duel threat QB. Signing him makes me wonder if the staff has come to the realization that developing an OL that can dominate in the ACC might be too tall a task.

I’m not really a skeptic of his talent at all. I just think he will be influenced when he doesn’t win the job this year.

I feel like signing a potentially good QB in each class is just a normal thing for a program that doesn’t suck and that throws the ball a lot. The days of signing high school backup QB’s from Canada and starting walkons will soon be long gone.
