PS: Syracuse football QBs Eric Dungey, Tommy DeVito set to compete (spring preview)

Agree with this but I don’t think you can include ED being wreckless without giving him a giant edge in running the ball. I don’t think we beat Clemson last year without his legs.
ED's mobility was key in all 4 victories last year. We saw the results when he wasn't available. Even in loses, he, almost single handed, kept games close.

Yep. If Ryan had to do what Eric has had to do, he would not have been indestructible.

This thread just got very interesting.

Dungey and Nassib, one pro style and one dual threat - impossible to compare. Both highly intelligent competitive leaders - but that's where the similarities end.

I will ignore running comparisons for obvious reasons.

As passers, I think Nasib has the edge in short to intermediate passes with Dungey far better downfield. I also think Dungey has more touch.

As field generals they are both good with Nassib being more patient and Dungey more explosive.

Nassib had the far better OLine, but not as talented a group of receivers as ED. Nassib played in a more conventional offense. (Interesting to speculate what his numbers would have been had he played in Dino's. I think they might has been off the charts.)

Nassib had a winning record in a weaker conference while Dungey's W-L record is poor in the tougher ACC.

Last but not least, Nassib was indestructible and not reckless. He was always available while ED has not been. To me, that might be the tie-breaker.

I would take either anywhere anytime, but if I had to choose only one for a game it would be Dungey. For a season, it would be Nassib.

During his senior year Ryan ran an up tempo offense - and had huge numbers.

I never felt that he - Nassib - was by himself out there - ever.

I have felt that way for Eric Dungey many times over his three years on the Hill.

I think by the end of 2018 - should he remain healthy - ED ends the debate pretty definitively.

Hopefully it will be a lot of fun to watch.

Good discussion!

Think back to Ryan's RS soph and jr years. He was practically defenseless (because he lacks mobility) when the pocket broke down which left him with no option other than turtle. I remember feeling sorry for him.

I love ED, but let’s be honest, Nassib is likely the best QB since McNabb. He was drafted and played (is playing?) in the NFL. I don’t know that ED is as good as Nassib.

I love RN and yes, he is a pro. He really didn't flourish until his senior year and had a really stout D on the other side. ED i just think is more dynamic and makes everyone around him better. His arm and accuracy is ever improving.

While there’s some truth to that, I don’t think it equates to what Eric has had to do, largely out of necessity.

And this is the right time to add that I totally respect what Ryan did here.

His courage and will to win against Miami and FSU were truly remarkable.

I will never forget the Miami DC looking for and embracing Eric on the field, at the end of the game.

I'm not sure I have ever seen an opposing coach demonstrate such respect for the other team's QB.

I truly believe we will be at the 8-10 win mark on a consistent basis sooner rather than later with Barbers/Devito. Won’t be every year but we will be fighting for it more times than not, in my opinion. And a down year will be 5-7/6-6, not 2-10/3-9/4-8.

Should be this season with Dungey, though I think we are a little too green at LB, S & WR for my liking. The talent is getting there.

In the Orange Bowl after the '98 season, McNabb threw a deep td pass after running for his life, I think it was Florida's d-coordinator that walked onto the field and shook McNabb's hand.

McNabb got beat up pretty good that night - by Jevon Kearse.

It was not a fun time in the Orange Bowl.

I'll accept the comparison between Donovan and Eric.

Any year under .500 from here forward would be a disappointment......no reason why this program cant be above the Mendoza line year in and year out......

Isn't that the truth, I was there for that beat down...

I wasn't, but I was stuck watching it with a Florida fan.

I think that was our only score that game.

Great write up. Agree 100%

I bet ED faced more NFL talent in his consecutive games vs nc state, miami, clemson, fsu and lsu than ryan nassib faced his whole career.

I am not bashing Ryan. Its downright impressive how big of a competitor ED is. Legendary

It's not Ryan's fault that he performed differently from Donovan or Eric. He wasn't that level of athlete, but he did maximize what he was good at.

It's a great testament to his smarts and arm strength that he was able to wear an NFL uniform for several seasons.

Eric may never do that. But an SU legend? Without question.

Not so sure the spread is what you think. For example, in 2013 alone Ryan played Penn State, Southern Cal, Mizzou, Minnesota, Louisville, West Virginia and some pretty good USF, Pitt, Cincy and Temple squads.

Also, in past years, the ACC was very top heavy.
Just sayin.

Thats fair. But LSU, Miami, FSU, Clemson and even Nc st were each extraordinary with pro talent imo.
