PS: Syracuse football QBs Eric Dungey, Tommy DeVito set to compete (spring preview)

I feel like signing a potentially good QB in each class is just a normal thing for a program that doesn’t suck and that throws the ball a lot. The days of signing high school backup QB’s from Canada and starting walkons will soon be long gone.
Completely greed, but my comment was is regard to Chase being a duel threat rather than a pocket passer.

I have long since moved on from the days of Matt Hale/Cam Daley and I think that HCDB and staff stuck with Zack because he was serviceable and well respected. I don't think we'll see walkons competing for PT at QB while Dino is here.

Completely agree with one caveat...the OL needs to significantly improve.

Otherwise, we all have to hope that TD can buy time with his feet and improvise (one of ED's greatest attributes) long enough to use his strong arm. Personally, I think TD is a way better athlete than most think and should be up to the task when his time comes.

Remember, sitting in the wings is Chase Amie, a highly rated duel threat QB. Signing him makes me wonder if the staff has come to the realization that developing an OL that can dominate in the ACC might be too tall a task.

Do all 14 (plus ND) OL's in the ACC "dominate"? I would think, by definition, no.
Does that stop them from being successful? No.

Having to routinely go against Clemson, FSU, Llvll, etc - it's unlikely our OL will ever "dominate" teams like that.
We just need to be competitive, and let the skill players be able to do what they do.

I agree that TD is a very underrated athlete - his SPARQ score is one of the best of any player we've ever recruited.
And he's got a laser for an arm, and the smarts to know how to use it for best effect.

This is going to sound weird but reading that I thought to myself that the chances of TD ever playing here are probably zero. He will lose the QB competition and then be in one with Amie the following year
I’m not really clear how you can project that to zero chance. I fully expect ED to be the starter, and for CA to redshirt. But I also expect TD to get some valuable time. That’s a huge advantage going into next season. Plus, Babers’ System is all about the QB making quick, good decisions. And we don’t really know how any of the QBs - ED aside - are at that aspect of the game yet. So way to early to project anything for next year, but TD will have the advantage of game snaps... unless Culpepper takes #2 spot.

Im one of Dungey’s biggest fans but it would not surprise me in the least if Devito’s taking near half the snaps or more by the acc schedule. This kid’s the real deal. Dungey’s a leader and a gamer, he’ll maintain his spot if he improves his throws and early down decision making.
Exactly. TD getting reps doesn't presuppose a meltdown or benching. There will be games where we'll be ahead or behind, or when ED's nicked up, just like last year. We haven't had QB depth like this in at least 20 years.

I think ppl are too high on Culpepper. He was about as good as Mahoney, IMO

Remember Madei Williams .. good athlete cannon arm .. did great great in practice .. and a total freeze up in games ..

Madei Williams I dont think was the same calibre prospect as Devito.

Oh good lord no!! Not close.

Watching him alternate with Troy the Magician was absolutely painful.

Glad he’s been able to carve out a niche for himself though.

DeVito was doing our routes with Victor Cruz before his senior year of HS. And he played at Bosco.

This kid is all about the lights it seems.

I'd like to see a Paulus - Nassib situation circa 2009.

Get TD some meaningful snaps - albeit this time with the same center who can shotgun a snap - while Captain (and leader) Dungey leads the team. And he can groom TD in the process getting a reprieve from taking an every snap pounding which hopefully leads to a full season of play. From my lips to...

I dont mean TD is another Madei but just pointing out not all practices translate to in game actions

It won't matter till the kid hits field (everything is speculation until he's out there) - but when you add up all of the signs, they point to a kid who is perfect for this system. I don't really care how bad our D was late. It's still a D1 D vs a true freshman. Just another sign that he's got a chance to be very good.

Too many signs to ignore. I'm amped.

I agree. TD is perfect for this system (Dungey is not). I suspect there may be a situation where TD is the better QB but Dungey has the locker room and experience. I don't envy Dino in such a scenario.

Saying everyone torched the Syracuse D at the end of last season is a nice enough laugh line, but if TD was torching the 1st team D with the scout team, that is very different from BC or Wake or Louisville torching the D with their starters. I can't imagine the scout team OL gave great protection, or the WR's much separation. Leading a scout team to success against the 1's on D - any D - is impressive.

The burnout rate on QB's is so high that there is no such thing as a sure thing. That said, TD is the most excited I've been for a QB since McNabb. His pedigree is far beyond anything seen in this program at the position in years and Dino runs a QB friendly system. It's hard not to salivate at the possibilities as the first group of Dino recruits starts to come of age together.

It seems that HCDB sees a big value in having QB's that can move the sticks when they need to do so with their legs. It's frustrating for D's as well and imo that's why ED gets so many late shots.

I love the depth as well but that said if SU has 2 or 3 very talented qb's behind a freshman or soph I'm not sure they'll want to wait around until it's their time, too many teams need quality qb's so it is possible walk ons will still be taking snaps in the future along with that injuries as well will be an issue. Of course, HCDB's walk ons will be really good under the radar guys so SU will be fine as you said.

I’m hearing TD is ready to step in and get some time playing this year. I haven’t seen anything just have heard so we will find out soon. ED is unable to stay on the field all year because of how much passion he plays with. ED emotions override his brain and it makes him do some incredible things but it also gets him hurt. TD will play, just don’t know how much.

I just want to win. I don’t truly care what Babers decides to do to win. Quarterback is NOT the easiest position to migrate meaningful reps in as much as it looks easy on paper.
