Purdue’s top receiver ineligible

Yeah, this is wrong. I went to Syracuse and am a graduate of VPA (visual performing arts) - a course of study is a course of study. Just because my coursework didn’t include writing papers doesn’t make my degree or experience less valuable.

Plus, you probably couldn’t do what I did to graduate and I couldn’t perform as a D1 athlete. Best to think of it as a highly specialized skill that requires honing via coursework, study, time, etc.
You didn’t read what I wrote

I can take philosophy classes without pursuing a philosophy career. “Academics” don’t just map cleanly to vocations. You’re going down an odd road here. There is an entire school of music already at the school, right? Does that not count because it’s not within your construct?
Music classes= academics. Singing in a bar doesn’t. They are both valuable though.

Physical Education = degree. Playing tennis not = degree

Most college courses aren't about 'life skills'. the ones I've described actually are, more so than a normal college curriculum. The courses outside of sports that athletes take now don't tend to lead of other careers for them. They are mostly to keep them eligible.

Life skills are mostly learned on weekend nights.

As i recall i took many more courses that had nothing to do with my degree but to help me grow as a person. As good as many of the D1 kids are still only a few are gonna do much with the scholie in a pro sport.
There are plenty of jobs in and around sports that an athlete could get awareness of, general introductory education of and if wanted, specialization in

Examples:
Coaching -high school, College, Pro
Private performance/skills coach
Agent or related account/relationship management
Athletic Training/PT/Orthopedics
Strength and Conditioning professional
Broadcasting/Commentating etc
Sports Administration/GM/Scouting etc
Sports/Entertainment production
Entrepreneurship/business/accounting/contract law/marketing/brand - for those who DO make it

lots of jobs.. but not every person is cut out to be working in those fields or willing to put in the work to do it..

Hence why I said introduction to, so at least these kids will get awareness. Most have no clue of the other options outside of making it as an athlete. Wouldnt it be nice if their curriculum gave them awareness and at least cracked the door open in the case they had the desire to pursue.

But chamber performances at Crouse do, right? And the lessons and rehearsals that build to them?

Count as “academics”?
I am not sure. I am fine if that’s part of a music degree/grading if they do. A music major takes a full courseload, right? Do they learn how to read music, theory, write music, take tests, take non music classes?

Are you really proposing that football players get degrees for going to practices? Cuz we know many never get into a game.

SU has options already.

I guess some people want to see colleges give degrees in football and basketball.

The idea is to recognize that professional sports is a profession.

if we had athletese taking courses only for staying an athlete we would end up with tons of kids with no life skills once they are done. at least pretending to take courses lends many a course to potential skill sets
Do music performance majors end up with no life skills? What about drama majors?

Do athletes get credit for practicing their sport? I find it weird if they don’t.

Again, my wife was in wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, marching band, and the like. She got credit for all of that. It was considered part of her “coursework” in pursuing a degree in music.

She also got a partial scholarship for music and had to audition to get into the school of music consider that recruitment and an “offer”.

The reality is that every one of recruited athletes goes to school for their sport. It’s not to say that most don’t take advantage of the degree options offers to them. But they choose that school primarily, if not entirely, due to sports. It’s strange that we still pretend that’s not the case.

Maybe football and basketball players have delusions they will make the NFL or NBA but in other sports they are happy to get a real degree. I was a scholarship athlete. Never once did I think I should get college academic credits for practice and competition. I can’t even imagine how funny it would have been to our AD if I had suggested I should. Someone posted there are plenty of degrees to be had related to sports. That’s the right path IMO. Not giving out degrees for playing a sport. They will be paid in cash now through NIL deals. That is what they wanted. Let’s not give them some goofy pretend degree too.

i believe the issue was lets have a course selection for athletes only related to some sports stuff.. I dont think that happens with most music majors now.. at least the ones I know, many that went on to be music teachers..

Curious… would you have gone to the school you did had it not been for your athletic scholarship?

Not “only”. Music students had to take courses outside the School of Music. I was a Communications major and I had to take courses outside of Newhouse. I don’t think people are suggesting someone only take “sports” courses.
