A few points:
  • I think it's okay for some fans to be a little concerned that he was beaten out by a True Freshman
However...
  • Joe Burrow, the #1 pick in the NFL draft and Heisman Trophy winner, was also originally beaten out and did quite well for himself after he transferred
  • He was beaten out by a South Carolina kid at a South Carolina school-That may have had an impact on the pecking order
  • I love being able to keep Villari at TE, where I think he can be a stud

RS in 2022

South Carolina Transfer QB Braden Davis Commits to Syracuse

The Orange has landed a commitment from a former highly coveted recruit.

Syracuse football has landed a transfer quarterback out of the portal in former South Carolina signal caller Braden Davis. Davis signed with the Gamecocks as part of their 2022 recruiting class as a four star quarterback per ESPN. He spent one season with South Carolina, in which he redshirted. The 6-5, 202 pounder has four years of eligibility remaining. He takes the roster spot vacated by Justin Lamson, who entered the transfer portal on the last day it was open following spring ball.

Davis will be coming much closer to home as he graduated from Middletown High School in Delaware. He was named Gatorade Player of the Year in Delaware following the 2021 season. He led his high school to an 11-1 record during his senior season as well as a state championship. He threw for 1,872 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 638 yards and three more scores. He was selected for the Under Armour All-America game. He comes from good bloodlines as his father, Antone Davis, was an offensive lineman at Tennessee before spending several years in the NFL with the Eagles, Falcons and Packers. Antone Davis was the eighth pick in the 1991 NFL Draft.

Out of High School, the younger Davis had offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Cincinnati, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Iowa, LSU, Maryland, Michigan State, NC State, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Washington State, West Virginia and several others in addition to South Carolina.

Of course the striking element surrounding the conversation of Davis is his frame, standing 6'5", 191 pounds with a big arm and great athleticism to boot. The right arm has plenty of strength in it, too, adding up to an athletic profile easy to covet independent of offensive system at the Power 5 level. Just last weekend at the Elite 11 Philadelphia, Davis ran sub 4.7 seconds in the 40-yard dash with a self-reported 4.13 short shuttle, finishing as the No. 4 athletic tester among the 75-plus athletes in attendance.

At the quarterback position, though, it begins with the throwing ability and when Davis is right, few in the 2022 class are better on any one throw. While the 2020 sample was small, the explosive examples were plentiful for a Lake Minneola team that would reach a state championship game before the season's end. His best ball was a one-play highlight just a handful of prospects nationally could attempt, much less complete. Davis was flushed to his right, kept his eyes downfield, and let it fly at the last moment between a defender and the sideline. It traveled 40 yards on a rope, seemingly inches over a defender's angle into the target's outstretched hands.

The Davis highs are tantalizing at the position, even independent of the athletic profile. He specializes in the intermediate game with a drive on the ball that can cut through a strong wind, hold up in the cold and increases the margin for error for the intended receiver to a degree. The ball comes off his arm with a relatively conventional release, though it sometimes the angle drops below three-quarter range when urgency factors into his decision-making. Davis is comfortable on the run, off-platform, and is willing to take chances down the field.

Davis himself was only a redshirt freshman.

The part about Sellers being from SC was not lost on me either, may be something there. Regardless, we did real good on the rebound here. Real good.

Some Reddit commentary from SC fans:

They’re missing the part about him transferring to Florida to play HS ball his Jr year. He got hurt and missed most of the season and I think it really affected his recruiting from the Big Boy schools along with his recruiting ranking.

Was buried on the depth chart at SC but sounds like he’s a very good athlete and can help somewhere if QB doesn’t work out.

Also sounds like he was beat out by Sellers because Sellers is that good :/

Looking at 247, (coming out of high school):

Tommy DeVito 4*, #8QB, #90 overall

Garrett Shrader 3*, #13QB, #88 overall

Carlos Del Rio Wilson 3*, #31QB #89 overall

Justin Lamson 3*, #42QB #87 overall

LaNorris Sellars 3*, #34QB #88 overall

Braden Davis 3*, #44QB #87 overall

What does it all mean?

The "experts" either were way wrong on Tommy or we ruined him?

Um, where exactly was Lamson rated that highly??
247 must be hitting the crack pipe.

He had a handful of offers, barely more than Dungey.

These other guys (not LaNorris) are/were legit 4* dudes.

Yes, even TDV.

Are those 87 and 88’s recruit rating scores and not rankings?

Which is nice.

It also confirms that Beck recognizes talent.
I don't know that it confirms it yet. If he ends up being good, it does. As others have suggested, it may be that he gets a shot a QB but he's athletic enough to move to another position if QB doesn't work out.

Just curious why we didn’t offer out of high school?

Coming into the '95 season, there was competition between McNabb and Kevin Johnson, 2 freshman, and another returning guy at QB. That was a pretty talented group, too.
Two NFL HOF guys in that group.(I think McNabb will get in at some time)

Not all that familiar with the South Carolina depth chart but there are other names in the quarterback room besides Rattler and Sellers. Is anyone actually projecting Sellers to be the backup or anywhere on the depth chart this year?
