I haven't been paying attention to this recruitment, so this comes as a surprise to me. Can anyone elaborate on what the expectation is here? Is the staff bringing him in with an expectation that he might end up the starter?

Kid is formerly the #150 OVERALL rated recruit in his high school class. New Jersey kid [Fran], who played for Campinelle's brother in HS [another connection]. Highly recruited, ended up at Notre Dame. Was stuck behind some pretty good QBs, and wants to go somewhere to start.

Kyle McCord put up video game numbers last year, and this kid probably envisions himself being able to capitalize similarly [not suggesting he'll be near as good as McCord].

Simple as that, IMO.

Wiltfong predicts it, it happens. This will be a big add, it is clear that the staff is not totally sold on Rickie. Yes, Fran named him the starter and of course talked him up but they likely see Angeli as an upgrade. Will be an interesting summer camp

I got to think that Rickie knew the deal when he came here. That Angeli would compete for the ND starting job, but if he doesn’t get the job, he will be joining the Cuse QB room.

Well ...get reading. ;)

Hope Collins sticks it out, because he could end up being a two-year starter, and might just need another year of development in the system to pop.

Probably too much to expect in this era of the portal.

Regardless, this positions us to be a major destination program for quality QBs every year moving forward. ESPECIALLY if Angeli has a good season, following up McCord's video game numbers season.

Do we know who else was recruiting him? I don’t understand how he doesn’t have better options to have better chances at starting.

Last year, our offense was a 9.5 out of 10, defense/special teams was probably a 3.5 out of 10. Strength of schedule was about a 5 out of 10 (probably being generous).

If our schedule this year is a 9.5 out of 10 then all of the units need to at least be a 7 out of 10 for us to get to a bowl game. If an Angeli/Collins QB battle can elevate the offense another point or two than I am all for it.

Go Orange.

If Angeli commits who hits the portal, Williams or Collins? Collin hit the portal that would free up more NIL money to fill other needs

As far as i can tell, he was not the 150th overall recruit in his class. He was 179th according to ESPN which I don't hold any value in at all. 247 had him as the 43rd overall QB in the class and 11th in NJ. 247 only shows the top 247 players i believe. Rivals had him as the 14th best player in NJ and a 5.6 rating. The 247 composite which averages the major site rankings together was a 365 ranking and that has the ESPN ranking averaged in. So if this was back when just 247, Rivals and ESPN made up the composite and On3 wasn't included (not sure on that though) and we subtract out ESPN, he was maybe the 458th ranked recruit on 247 and Rivals as an average.

But his HS rating doesn't mean much now anyway. He is now rated an 88 on the 247 transfer portal ratings.

Collins has the advantage of knowing the system better as he has been here for a while and went through spring ball. I say, let the best QB win the job. Competition is good for both of them.

He was named starter because of how quickly he picked the offense up and became a leader. Fran set his own arbitrary deadline as camp started to name one by the end of spring. Didn’t have to do that at all.

1) Per RF's comment above, the McCord effect is real. QBs consider us a place to put up numbers.
2) Just my opinion, but I think he's being promised more than "open competition." I could be totally wrong but I think to get him he has to know he's the leader in the clubhouse here.
3) He has existing relationships with the staff.

I hope none of them do for this coming year, and we have a robust year of growth and competition from 4 QB's. No idea how Angeli vs Collins shakes out but it's great for the program to be upgrading constantly.

Well, the 247 composite ranking had him rated as the #21 QB. But you're right, none of that means much now. However, the offers were pretty damned impressive:

No way he is promised more than the opportunity to compete for #1. He has to win it. That is how they do things. But the staff may have told him they think he has a better shot to win it.

We are selling our offensive system that was maybe the best in the country last year. Why would Angeli not want to come here?
