Back in my day (50's) Utica had an identity. Italian mafia and the "Sin City" of the east. Gateway to the Adirondacks. More than a few entertainment and sports celebrities over the years. Dick Clark, Annette Funicello, Joe Bonamassa, Steve Wynn, Bobo Salerno, Andy Van Slyke, Dave Cash, Robert Esche, Will Smith just off the top of my head. Politics and taxes killed it and the anchor businesses all eventually moved on.
Forty or so years ago the State Police were required to check in with the City PD before operating in Utica. Utica had a Chief of Police that aced the Civil Service exam. I can't remember who Monitored the exam, but he was forever involved with shady deals in the state. He was a SU Grad thou. Lots of Utica corruption stories.

My grandfather was an attorney in Syracuse post WW 2 era. He had a lot of Utica clients. When he passed we cleaned out his office safe. There was a .38 with a filed down serial number. Turned that over to the sheriffs.
Andy VanSlyke is New Hartford Spartan. His dad was my assistant principal
My family is Sicilian ! So the rest is all good. My dad got his first business loan from a mob shark. No banks

Hey oh. Spent some time and money there
I don't believe it's very active anymore

They got raided last summer and I think have cut back their hours and days

Benny served 46 years. 31 as chief. Passed in 2010. There was a lot of "stuff" that went on politically, but don't know personally how much he was involved. I know (second hand of course) that "Ma Baker" ran her entertainment establishment and seemed to know the right connections. Utica really did have it's upside back in the day.

Utica hasn't had this much promotion in the last 50 years!!

After some digging I was able to come up with an archival photo of the Utica Civil Service exam monitor:

if it’s true (and 24/7 is never wrong) all I can say is “Right On”…. I never knew Angeli‘s flew so low

I keep looking at this thread expecting a new commitment ;-).

Oh.. I grew up in the Rome Utica area many decades ago when it was a good place for middle class families. I haven’t been back there in many years. Now I just see the signs as I drive to SU.

I haven't been paying attention to this recruitment, so this comes as a surprise to me. Can anyone elaborate on what the expectation is here? Is the staff bringing him in with an expectation that he could be the starter this year?
