QB thoughts

I love coaching trees. I have one in my backyard.

"Ok buddy, run towards the tree and when you get about 3 steps away I want you to turn around, take 2 steps back towards me, and dad will throw you the ball, it's called a hook route."

I'm not sure about procedural evaluation protocol but I would blame the line coach. If the line coach tells (when asked) about a player's progress that the kid is ready, I have trust him. After all,I hired him to do this . If he misjudged, I have to consider a change there. AS s a "head coach I need to trust in the evaluations of the assistants I hired. That would be made Effn clear when I hired them. I think that must be true in all athletic endevors.
How do you know what was said? The conversation could have easily been...

"So who's ready to play Sat?"
"Nobody"
"Well we have to play somebody"
"Give 57 a shot, at least he's working hard"

As a little league coach it doesn't matter if anyone has the ability to pitch, once the 3 main pitchers are done, you still need a pitcher. It's like throwing darts in the dark and hoping one of the other teams kids don't get killed or we don't walk in 5 runs.

Guys like Leach and Kelly really are mad scientists. Out of box thinkers and makes sense why they were stuck in a box for a number of years, like Kelly at unh. Bellotti at Oregon made a great hire but that hire probably forced his retirement 4-5 years prematurely. Kelly was doing that crazy stuff for years way back in his Columbia days, sad fact is nobody wanted to take the chance on him.

Leach had more mentoring than Kelly but if you look at the leach disciples and their success on the offensive side of the ball it's really mind boggling. Dude may not be the best HC but amazing what he has brought to the college game one offense.

I would bet that Kelly and Leach are probably far above average intelligence for a football coach.

Who cares who is from any coaching tree? It's an imperfect metric. That's the point: a wildly inconsistent way of measuring coaches.

Late to this party, and Milly has it covered already. Not only has this tree produced a lot of fruit; but the fruit has produced a lot of fruit. Wildly consistent fruit. And we never even looked for fruit.

THE HAL MUMME COACHING TREE
Direct disciples
Coach Current position
Mike Leach Washington State head coach
Dana Holgorsen West Virginia head coach
Sonny Dykes Cal head coach
Tony Franklin Cal offensive coordinator
Neal Brown Kentucky offensive coordinator
Shannon Dawson West Virginia offensive coordinator
Chris Hatcher Murray State head coach
Matt Mumme Davidson offensive coordinator
Guy Morriss former Kentucky/Baylor head coach

Second-generation disciples
Coach Current position
Art Briles Baylor head coach (former Leach assistant)
Kliff Kingsbury Texas Tech head coach (former Leach QB)
Josh Heupel Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator (former Leach QB)
Seth Littrell Indiana offensive coordinator (former Leach player/assistant)
David Dean Valdosta State head coach (former Hatcher assistant)
*Greg McMackin Former Hawaii head coach (former Leach assistant)
*Ruffin McNeill East Carolina head coach (former Leach assistant)
*Will Muschamp Florida head coach (brief stint as Hatcher assistant)
*Kirby Smart Alabama defensive coordinator (former Hatcher assistant)
*Dave Aranda Wisconsin defensive coordinator (former Leach assistant)

*-- Defensive coach. Defensive coaches who know the Mumme offense also are in demand because of the spread offense's proliferation.

I'm not sure I'd be blasting Humme's resume like he's a saint.

"In early 2001, Mumme resigned amid numerous NCAA rules violations, largely payments to recruits.[15] The team was eventually found to be in violation of more than three dozen recruiting violations. His former recruiting coordinator, Claude Bassett, was deemed the worst offender. Bassett had been forced to resign in 2000 for giving gifts to prospects and writing papers for them, and was slapped with an eight-year show-cause penalty, which effectively blackballed him from the collegiate ranks until 2009.[16] As a result, they were banned from post-season play in 2002 and lost 19 scholarships over the next three seasons"

He's also sporting a slightly better winning percentage than .500, and got fired from New Mexico State amid allegations of abuse (like Leach! Coaching tree!).

Right, Mumme is no saint. Neither is Boeheim. Neither is this Strawman. And none of this has anything to do with your belief that coaching trees are irrelevant.

I've changed my mind on coaching trees, you guys. I'm rolling with a guy who is from the Woody Hays coaching tree. That guy produced some good fruit, no? Bill Mallory coached under him and was great (higher winning percentage than Humme or Leach without scandal or abuse!). Shafer coached under Mallory and cites him as a huge influence.

So you're saying just the good stuff gets passed down?

And I didn't say irrelevant. I said overrated. Fans glom onto them like stars in recruiting because they made hard to understand things easier to digest.

It makes sense actually. What disciple of that offense would want to play half or more of their games in controlled conditions like we can offer?

he's a maniac. you have to be crazy to go so far against the meathead grain. this is why you hire normal people who saw how it worked and learned it from the maniac.

I hear you. Just an odd coincidence in the tree I guess.

any thoughts on why we have such a problem recruiting a quality qb?

We have a ton of youth at the position

We have a ton of youth at the position
thanks for the reply, but we have no one, of substance,in my myopic view, that would scare anyone off---some thing else is amiss

I think aj long is a future at qb. Saw a lot from him last year.

really? Because I feel the exact opposite with Long. I didn't see an "a" tool. No arm, no wheels, no size. IMO hunt is light years better...and well...

The qb position is why I'm so down on this program. Success starts there.

none of the qbs i saw last year inspire any hope that they will be the reason for a turnaround. They may help out b/c other areas are strong and we can rely on a manager at that position. Hunt was very mediocre a few years ago and bad last year (with the injuries as well).

I hope to see a much more improved Hunt for us to rely on him to win a game. I'm banking on the RBs more than Hunt.

we somehow got cursed- done some research and it appears to have started post mcnabb-

its a nasty curse that likes to tease with a solid qb play for a game or 2 then back to the curse

i wouldnt doubt mike vick has something to do with it- he looks like a gypsy

Just why the hell can't we recruit a good QB? Are there so few of the good ones to go around? I miss Todd Philcox, Marvin Graves and Donny McPherson. Man, we hummed when they were at the helm. Our offense was fun to watch!!!

is it a lack of qb's

a lack of oc's

a lack of hc's

or all of the above
