QB1: Angeli

Well said. Hard to overstate how import McCord’s lighting quick throwing motion was to the offense last year. It took a ton of pressure off a suspect line and gave the team a real rhythm on all those long scoring drives. Especially with a revamped line this year, we need someone making the correct pre-snap reads to get the ball to playmakers in space ASAP. That will have its own benefit as you mention above, as well as that of taking pressure off the front and opening up the run game and deeper passing concepts.
I don't expect the same lightning fast release from Angeli but he's more mobile, so that can take some pressure off of the line too. It may lead to a little less rhythm, but scrambling can also drive a defense batty as initially covered receivers break open and make plays just as a defense thinks they have a play stopped.

And one more thing (as I reply to myself)--If you really believe that Steve became a winner by not having enough talent, I question your ability to make a proper evaluation

Looking from afar, it seems obvious that Steve won the job due to his talent, experience (ability to perform on the big stage), decision-making, AND leadership capability

Can't wait to see him come out and play Tennessee in a couple weeks

My point was Doug was dangerous when he came in and a crowd favorite. He might come in once a game or maybe 4-5 times. He knew his role. Rickie obviously has better legs and a stronger arm than Steve. Take advantage of his talent and this skillset verse Steve’s for the element of surprise. This isn’t a McCord situation like last year where we didn’t have another option. These dudes can both obviously play. Again, this was my dream scenario to keep both guys genuinely with their heads in the game.

Actually, C44s maybe more of a Devito type like the 10 win season with Dungey.

I do agree with the takes about the response from the dot com crew. A bit hyperbolic. Collins has a higher ceiling but if he throws too many picks NOW it won't help the team win.

The battle was so close Angeli has to be on point weekly anyway because Collins is lurking and waiting for his shot.

This competition was a good thing. Helps elevate the room and will continue to do so.

Probably the same thing happened during the QB battle between Tom Brady and Drew Henson at Michigan. QB isn't just about Physical talent. If it was, Jamarcus Russell would be in the NFL HOF and Joe Montana would be a bum.

Just listening to this axe podcast you would think angeli was a bum and can’t win you a game
If it's as close of a competition as it sounded like it was throughout camp, I don't understand how anyone can be worried going into this season about the QB position.

It also makes no sense to bash the winner of the competition (unless you are looking for clicks and controversy).

All it takes is one injury to change everything and having two QBs with starting potential is great news for this program.

If I could, I'd bet the house on a 15 to 20ish yard Johntay Cook TD from a drag/crossing route vs. Tennessee.

Watching the Notre Dame spring game and Angeli's highlights, he seems to love these routes. Get Cook in space and let him work

I kinda like the initial reactions.

I'm also kinda shocked that the sarcasm wasn't implied.

To be fair, I’ve been on here a long time and when I read your post it somehow went right over my head. I was like, that was out of left field…….

I was also trying to catch up, skimming through 5 pages. So that’s a factor too.

I had no horse in this race other than I wanted the young man who gives the Syracuse Offense the best chance of succeeding. None of the local pundits got to see what the coaches did every day at practice for the entire practice. For them to be as negative towards the powers that count picking Angeli is kind of baffling. What no one other than Coach Brown has pointed out is that you have a young man in Angeli that had to learn the offense, build chemistry with his team mates and coaches and compete against a young man who had a five-six month head start on him. For Angeli to overcome those obstacles, to me is quite an accomplishment. My feeling is that if Steve Angeli is successful, Syracuse University will be successful and in the end that’s what matters. Go Orange!!!!

precisely. It was incredibly rare for Syracuse to play one QB all season last year. It's rare for any program these days. I'd bet we see both guys play this year, whether there's an injury or just another reason. You need to have a legit backup ready to go if you want to be a top tier program.

Watching the highlight reel, what impressed me most was his ability to feel pressure and not just run. He does have some runs obviously. But he moves his hips and shoulders really well to avoid OL trying to get their hands on him while he’s moving in/out of areas in the pocket. At the same time he’s looking for players to throw to.

We are getting a guy who clearly has some skill, but has way less of a proven track record than McCord. While I have some faith in the WR crew this year, there is no proven veteran talent in Gadsden, Meeks, or Pena to help him out. To be thrown into the fire on the road against a team like Tennessee is a one hell of a tough task out of the gate. You may recall McCord looking a little shaky in the early going against Ohio in the Dome.

I hope this does not turn into everyone immediately demanding to see Collins at the first sign of adversity. This game could go a lot of different ways, and a rough start would not be out of the question at all. He could still go on to be excellent once he settles in, even with some shaky stuff in the first game.

Yeah I love our receiver room. Your 3 likely starters are Gill, Cook and JRS. Gill and Cook are both extremely fast, great athletes with good hands. Then you have JRS who is a big bodied guy, who knows how to use his body as we saw towards the end of last season when he was finally getting healthy. Then behind those guys, you have a bunch of young players. But players that were highly regarded. Lots of good potential talent but unproven. There’s like 5 young guys in receiving core that I really like. Even if you hit on 2 or 3 of those guys. You are in really good shape

The nice thing is that with a proven core nucleus, players like Ross / Hornsby or other inexperienced guys don't have to be counted upon to play huge roles. They can be complimentary weapons, with opposing defenses focusing on the big three.

Kind of like the role Gill played LAST season. And then he proved that he was ready to ascend into a bigger role THIS year.

I bet that Ross and at least one of the frosh pop, and bolster the already strong nucleus.
