QB1: Angeli

Pena seemed to transfer because he wasn't confident in Collins. Rickie is a toolsy guy and hopefully he can help us this year and in the future. A lot of his recruiting hype was his athletic ability. It takes time to turn playmaking ability into a QB that wins every down for you.

Angeli is a veteran QB who has experience in big games. I think he gives you the best chance to win against Tennessee. He should be a poor man's version of Kyle McCord.

With Angeli, little has to change from last year and they can still run a pro style offense. With Collins, you have to adjust the offense to lean on his dual threat ability. You can only have one starting QB. It sucks to work hard and have to hold the clipboard but that's the deal. Maybe we'll find some packages for Collins as the year goes on in order to get him on the field. Last year I don't remember ever seeing a backup QB play, although some of that is we'd always let the other team back in the game at the end.
Pena transferred because he demanded more $$ than he was worth.

Very interesting stat in here. Last season for App State per PFF, Joey Aguilar had 24 turnover worthy plays. For Angeli, in 91 total dropbacks he has ZERO turnover worthy plays.

That could be the key vs. Tennessee
This is the reason Steve is starting.

I kinda like the initial reactions.

I'm also kinda shocked that the sarcasm wasn't implied.
Why? We don't know you, we've seen much worse, that sentiment is all too present, and you must not read Youtube or Reddit comments.

Make the right read
Accurate throws
Protect the ball
Is why Steve won the job.
I was thinking the same thing.
Ricki is taller and the more dynamic athlete, he has a strong arm and really puts zip on the ball, solid accuracy but ball still wobbles,
Steve has live game experiences, makes solid pre-snap reads, low turnover rate, has a slightly weaker arm but is slightly more accurate

yup. And it still comes down to what kind of Oline do we get. Time to make reads and blocking to allow us to not call plays from behind the chain.

the little video I saw made me wonder, his motion seems a bit off, more like a bball player trying to be a QB.

Based on some basic reasoning we will be better, we just don't know by how much.

Ricki
Yes! I closely watched all his HS and LSU practices and Spring tape and his throwing motion was poor.
Recent SU practices shows me he really has improved his motion but his ball still does a flutter wobble as it gets to the receiver. Showing me his throwing motion is still a little too long and his release and hand placement on ball is a hair off. His improvement to this point shows me with further work and finetuning by next year or 2 he really will be a dynamic all around QB.

From what I've seen I don't know why he isn't starting for ND. Physically there isn't one particular skill he does better than Collins other than accuracy.
I'm not a coach so in watching practice I have no idea if he is getting them in the right pre snap set or if he's making the right read other than Steve simply seems smooth. Like really smooth and really in command. The staff knows that we have multiple game breakers on O. Lots of I miss and we take it to the house guys.
Remember Alabama and Clemson a few years back. 7 yard crossing routes go 75 for scores.
That's SU this year. Combine that with the most athletic and largest group of road graders I've seen on the hill in front of a kid that is a beast and we have the makings of a team that will force some teams to play 8 in the box.
We look like we can score on every play. Still raw but the talent is evident.
The last thing we need are turnovers or missed reads.
Hitting a kid in stride is what guys like Brady do. That is Steve's game.
Quick read ball out fast limited mistakes equals starting QB

Very good post. I agree with everything. A good QB who doesn't make mistakes is a better than a QB who makes great plays but occasionally misses passes, takes sacks, or throws interceptions.

I'm not gonna lie. I appreciate the work Chris Carlson does, but that article on why Angeli won the starting job is kind of trash and a little more than a passive slap in the face to Steve. He calls Steve the "safe choice" but not the more talented one. Yikes.

I would post numerous quotes from the article, but I'm afraid my post would be removed because this is an article for Syracuse.com subscribers

I found myself really turned off by it

The Tennessee offense is completely unproven. They have a new QB, New RB, a whole new WR group with only 7 scholarship players, and are replacing 3 OLINE. The backbone of their team is the Defense.
Except for the last sentence...it's like you're describing SU.
