OK, what can be done to fix the ca ca mess that is the punt coverage unit? Is it execution? (people not remaining in their lanes) Is it personnel? (Some slooowwww guys out there - there was one player on the first long return who I could beat in a foot race out there - why?) Is it coaching? Is this something that can be fixed in a week?

First the slow guy was Rogers who is the long snapper, so that's why he was out there. Second Marrone said Reddish was doubled and the guy next to him missed the play. Seems like guys that were playing are fastest team has. Hurts that foster is out for the year. Also I think Shu would have helped.

With all due respect, are we really going to blame injuries again? Not having Shu Mungwa is the problem? We have enough players to not be brutal there for the umpteenth year in a row.

they just need to learn to settle down and not attack a player that is much quicker.. how many punts at game speed to we really think they worked on in practice.. if he kicks had been 42 yds the two returns dont happen. if the contain guy takes on less step it doesn't happen.. i expect it to be better this week and it needs to be..

get rid of the big slow wall in front of the punter even further away from the small fast guy returning kicks

if we insist on a wall, put some smaller faster guys in it.

and no punts = no punt returns

especially against USC. roll the dice and don't give them the ball. who cares, balls out.

(and i don't think i'm some xs and os guy nor do i wanna be)

I don't disagree with that. NU made no real effort to block a punt. Though I think SU went to the 3-man wall because he was having some issues getting the punt off quickly enough.

Knew you would work in the no punt strategy somewhere. Would be interesting this weekend. Don't expect it though.

And I thought the "X and O" reference was hugs and kisses. What do I know!

Agree with getting rid of the linemen. Would instead like to see TE/LB as the swinging gate. Something like Wales, Coker, and Cutler would be plenty big enough. Gunners should be Eskridge and Reddish or Anderson. At the end of the day though Reddish bit on a juke move and lost contain. Once you lose contain its over. Lastly, I know people have dispelled it before but Riley did out kick his coverage. There is a big difference when a punt goes 49 yards as opposed to 41-42 yards in terms of having the cover team downfield. Just look at the reverse on our side. Desir had no chance for a return on a couple of plays because of the length of the kick.

AGreed. That punt went 58 yards, and Mark did a great job to get back into position to receive it quickly. The truth is, a 45 yarder probably would have been fair caught.

I think the gaps each person is responsible for while running down in there lanes is way to much. They are asking a lot especially if we are going for distance over hang time with these punts going forward. I wonder how are punter is at angle kicking

There is no such thing as telling a punter not to kick it too far. If you can boom a punt 60 yards you do it. But, there is such a thing as needing more hang time.

Did you think hang time was the issue on the TD? I thought that punt was going to hit the roof.

On tv it looked like our lanes broke down, we were bunched up, and when he cut back there was nothing there but a lot of green space.

My take (on the second punt, which I think was worse coverage than the return): 7 guys ran down the field, all seemingly within 15yards of eachother. The returner just had to outrun them to the outside where there must have been 40 open yards in front of him. The remaining 4 players including Fisher were back but for some reason, the three guys we have in our bunch protection unit are not nearly athletic enough for the ST unit. One of them looked like a nose tackle. Put FBs or reserve TEs in that role.

Definitely not the issue. If anything you want more hangtime. Cue the Desean Jackson punt return vs. the Giants as time expired.

There is no reason to go there - already suffering enough here!

Agreed. Am I the only one that thought Reddish was blocked in the back on the punt return for a TD. Coach Henderson was hot.

Not sure if that was intended for me but I did have a sentence that stated

agree 100%. Anyone who said he didn't out kick his coverage never covered a punt before. When an nfl team looks at a punter they look at how far and hang time. Those punts were 60 yards but never made it very high. And when a decent return guy gets a punt with 20 yards of space it lets him get up to speed. when he gets up to speed it doesn't matter who is on the field, he has the advantage. Riley needs to find a balance between length and hang time to allow his guys down the field to take away any lanes for a return.

go with speed as far as the back line is concerned i would sub in RB's or DB's

They likely have a max protect package and a coverage package.

The issue Saturday was not "lane" related, it was an outside containment issue (as per DM). IMO, if you are going with max protect personnel, you need to have excellent gunners, great hang time, and/or must kick away from the returner.

Mark was good. Too good to kick to, IMO. If SU kicks to Lee - considered to be one of the fastest players in the country - on Saturday, it will be ugly.

No I didn't think it was the issue.

He didn't outkick his coverage and the hang time was fine.
