Why don’t the rankings only reflect teams who will actually be playing?

I haven’t looked at rankings yet. But if there are a bunch of B1G/PAC teams in the rankings, it’s because Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan fans want to feel like mommy’s special guy, and they’re willing to pay (indirectly) for the ego boost.
