Ray Rice is cut by Ravens.

I'd bet it is. The police had the video and didn't allow the NFL to view it. Goodell said in his release that he knew a video existed but the police wouldn't allow their staff to view it.

If Goodell couldn't see it, I doubt that the Ravens had seen it.

As to what people thought happened, I assume they thought there was some kind of argument, and hope that maybe she struck first. In reality everybody knew he cold cocked her, but if the video wasn't ever seen by public eye the outrage would have died away.

For the most part this will die away as well. rice will play in the league again a year from now having been "rehabilitated" it just won't be with the Ravens. The public outcry and demand for his head would have "forced" then to cut him eventually, they just did it ASAP.

As for the NFLPA I don't think what the NFL did (extending a suspension after the fact without any "details" being added to the offense) probably isn't allowed. However my guess is the NFLPA wanted this suspension anyways given the extremely public evidence, and as such won't fight it.

As to those unsure if Rice will play again because of this instance, just remember, Vick got another shot, donate Stallworth killed a man and played again. Rice will be fine in that regard.

The best part of this news is that now Rutgers won't be using Ray Rice as a recruiting tool anymore.

Honest question--aren't the obligated to contest it, since Rice is a member? Not trying to be funny--serious question.

Seriously why is Rice not in jail if the DA had access to this video?

It took 10 long years, but finally there is one positive from the Greg Robinson era - his hiring helped us to avoid this embarrassment today. So thank you Greg. (Never thought I'd write those words) :D

Rice had a lousy 2013 season, which many blamed on the OL. There's certainly some truth in this (Flacco took a beating last season), but I wonder if Rice simply hit the RB wall - it's been said that RBs only have so many carries in their legs (which is why RBs from teams like Penn State and Ohio State tend to have short NFL careers). Maybe this provides a convenient opportunity for the Ravens to unload $10M in salary they owe Rice over the next 3 seasons..

In truth I have no idea. I asked that same question on an NFL board i post on as well. I would assume they have to for purposes of legal precedent (supposing their isn't some rule that the commish can simply change his mind and lengthen a suspension later on without any increase in charges. Which would seem quite unlikely that the NFLPA would allow such a stipulation to take place) in the event Goodell decided to do this to someone not so universally despised at the time of the addtiional indefinite suspension.

But then again they would receive serious political backlash right now for fighting for Rice, and frankly most reactions being reported are that everybody is insanely disgusted and wants Rice to Adios.

Like I said though, all emotions lessen with time and space from the issue, and if Vick (who actually went ot jail) and Stallworth (who killed a man) can get reinstated and play again, Rice will certainly be able to do so. Now last year he looked like his NFL legs left him, and he shaun alexander'd, if thats the case he may never get to play again not because of this incident but because he is well and truly done as a football player.

Also I am willing to bet dollars to donuts, that as horrific as what Rice did was, an NFL player has whipped the crap out of "his" woman much much worse than what Rice did and because he didn't get caught on tape will get to continue on with his career uninterrupted. In reality the moral of this story is not "do not commit crimes against women" but do not get caught doing it on camera. No one will say it but thats the truth.

Here is this link http://deadspin.com/whose-idiotic-ray-rice-comments-look-especially-awful-t-1632033541

this comment is so unbelievably true by a commenter there. It is somewhat adjusted for memories sake. because I cant seem to find it to copy it over.

"Did they think that she was just whipping his a$$ and he stood their stoically and heroically taking this abuse until he no longer had any choice but to take one swing at her in self defense knocking her senseless? If they did they are morons! this video is exactly what I expected, and so did many others. They were just holding off on these things until the "game tape" of the incident could be released for proper review. It's such a load of horse ****t. If the tape never came to light nothing would ever have been done about it beyond a 2 game suspension the commish admitted "he got wrong." Ultimately everybody had a really strong idea of how it went down, and simply because they didnt want it to be true they fought like heck to assume it wasnt because he is a star, if this had been [insert name of random UDFA trying to make the team here ] the guy would have been canned and sent on his merry way never to receive another shot at the pros. What's that line from the santa claus? Seeing isn't believing, believing is seeing? everyone out there was undergoing the "i don't believe he could have done this, therefore he didn't" thought process and as such another woman was so battered and abused by her man that she actually got up off the mat and married the guy. Whether it's because she has nightingale syndrome or she simply believes the money is worth it this was allowed to happen instead of this being thrown in jail the like the criminal he is."

can't say I have much if anything to disagree with the guy who said it.

That wasn't the only thing he hit.

I would say a couple reasons, 1. while this video exists, it does NOT show a pattern of abuse. It strongly suggests one to me given how he didn't even hesitate to unload on her, but there is no proof of a pattern purely in the video evidence. If there are no police reports/calls from the address hospital visits (which in several cases there are not, or at least not early on the control an abuser has is just too much if there are no major injuries ala broken bones) its nearly impossible to establish a pattern of behavior.

2nd the fact he is a professional athlete scares a lot of prosecutors. All it takes is one guy to be a strong Ravens fan who would never vote against Rice and he walks. At least this way he has a conviction on record for his ple bargin and a pattern of behavior has at a minimum been established in the event he ever takes action against a woman again they can throw the book at him.

Thats just my speculation of course.

She is suffering from Battered wife syndrome. Ray Ray should be doing at least 18 months.

Donnie McPherson was just on CNN. Came down on the NFL, the Ravens and Rice.

What he did was awful but at this point everything being done is due to everyone being in CYA mode.

He should've been suspended longer initially but now it's just overkill because everyone needs to cover themselves after not handling it correctly the first time.

Agreed, should have probably served time, 1 year suspension from league. The league really mismanaged this. Bad move, rice would have been better off in long run too. Horribly mismanaged

I find it absurd that I somehow feel bad for him now. His fiancé became his wife after all that, she's by his side and now his entire career is in jeopardy because the NFL messed up and needs to cover themselves.

Also, to the holier than thou crowd, don't act like your favorite team doesn't have players on it that have done this type of stuff...they just haven't gotten caught or were smart enough to pay whatever it takes to confiscate the tapes.

That word. You keep using it. I do not think it means what you think it means.

What if this was the first data point in a future pattern of abuse? Behavior is fairly predictive, one documented incident is a strong suggestion of past/future such incidents.

Are you from the movie Minority Report?

His career is in jeopardy because he screwed up. Personal responsibility. I wouldn't care if the punishment didn't come for another year. You do something stupid you pay the price. He's an idiot and a scumbag. I have zero sympathy for him at all.

I'm not sure why it matters what the NFL potentially screwed up, none of this matters if Ray Rice doesn't punch his wife in the face.

It was an awful act, no doubt, but should every person/player have their life ruined over one act? He didn't kill someone. Again, awful act, he should've initially been suspended for much longer, but right now a lot of people seem to be in a heightened state of overreaction.. But that's par for the course in today's society.

Well it certainly could be a point in a future pattern of abuse. That's kind of what i said about the reason the prosecutors worked to get a plea. It makes certain this event is established so that an event exists so that if he ever gets caught doing this again, they can point to this event to establish a pattern.

That's precisely why I said in a year he will get another shot. If Dontae Stallworth (who actually did kill someone) got to play again, Rice will to

When was the last time you saw someone serve time for punching anyone in the face? That never happens.

He would have been better off if he never punched a woman, much less his fiance/wife in the face.

I always equate this type of situation to the real world. Would he lose his job if he was a truck driver or an accountant? Probably not and most likely nobody would know outside of his and her family.

...But in this case, playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right and they have the ability to choose who plays in the league and who doesn't and they don't want anyone at this point in time that can put a smudge on the league's reputation or image.

In this day and age, how can anyone possibly not know that this video was A- out there and B- that everyone would eventually see it on the web.

Mind- boggling first and foremos the stupidity of Ray Rice and the NFL.

Most everyone else would get fired over that act. He should too. He doesn't belong in the NFL. Hope he invested wisely.

The Ravens were cowards up until today. They KNEW what that video contained even if they didn't see it. To keep him after the initial news of all this, have their PR director write a 1200 word essay on how great of a person Rice is, to getting standing ovations is all disgusting. If Bernard Pierce wasn't such a crappy RB, they would have been able to overlook the football aspect of things of keeping Rice, even though Rice isn't very good either. Today, they were forced to cut him, for the most part.
