RB Garrison Johnson transferred to Kilgore

Pandemics aside, how many recruits from Texas stick it out here? I would guess it feels like moving to a different country when they show up in Syracuse.

Well the OT we got out of the deal helped us to a 10-3 season. I'll take it.

Yeah but he's right. That was a net negative move. It didn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense when the hire was announced. You could see right off the bat how ugly it could get if things didn't work out. Thankfully Dino had the guts to pull the plug.

I wish him well. With pandemic and all I can see why kids might want to be closer to home.

Shouldn't we wait and see where he winds up first?

net REMAINING benefit. Reading is fundamental.

Yes - Koda Martin was instrumental to that 10-3 season.
And yes - he came to Syracuse because his Dad was coaching here.

Now, the REMAINING benefit of Coach Martin having been on staff - aka kids he recruited - is now nada.

This.

My impression is that the return on recruits who from Texas to SU for football is very bad. Lots of players who never get on the field. We had some good contributors years ago but recent history is not good.

I hope Dillon M is an exception. It has to help that his position coach and OC is also from Texas.

Why aren't we getting all those top NYS HS players who want to come home?
Dont know but I there are some fine NYS players that would contribute just as much or more than some of the players at Cuse. Earnest Edwards and Taylor RIggins are two examples.

True. He and Koda are the only ones I can remember in the last decade or so that were contributors.

Neither was a normal HS recruit, but both helped us.

We have had a lot of kids from Texas high schools who haven't even lasted 2 years in the program. Not sure what the problem is but it is concerning.

We don't know location was an issue here. He has been low on the depth chart since he got here.
He would be a redshirt frosh this year, so him not playing as a true frosh is a very difficult thing to analyze. I believe entering the portal is not a definite sign he will leave, but certainly is not a sign he will stay either. He may have determined his chances of seeing the field are not great after seeing his competition or he may just want to be closer to home.

currently in San Angelo Texas (side note a good D2 school) and the culture here is way different then NY. I don’t blame anyone wanting to leave honestly

it was a net positive in my opinion. All-ACC 3rd team and led the team in snaps = durability. Do we go 10-3 without him? debatable. Kid was awesome for us.

Leave Texas or here?

I can read. When any coach leaves there will eventually be no net remaining benefit. Thanks for pointing that out in a douchy way.

I have been in Texas, and have lived in NY all my life exept for service time. Only inertia keeps me in NY.

Texas has so many universities. Most of the guys we have gotten from Texas are the leftovers who 5 other schools in the area don't want (though I think Dillon as a QB is different, as teams generally one bring in 1 QB per class). I'd rather focus resources on getting the top Ohio kids who Ohio State won't take.
