That is what i'm slightly worried about. I still think we get him, maybe just not as confident as a few days ago.
They guys in Florida really know how to work it.

Case in point. Steven's second night there, we all went to a restaurant in town. The whole damn place was packed with Gator fans. As soon as a recruit would walk in, the place would erupt in cheering and standing ovations. It was insane. Engineered by the coaches? Probably, to a degree. But, it was impressive, and very hard to ignore.

bcubs9497 Steve, are you trying to say we all need to convince our wives to spend all recruiting weekends at Dave and Busters and Dinosaur, having beers and watching the big screens. Cause I will make the pitch for the cause!!!

On a serious note how hard is it to not get sucked in as a parent. I mean the entire recruiting process the parents have to sacrifice and help so much to get these kids to this moment. I know you backed way away during the final days, that must have been hard, no?

Regardless- the point of a beat reporter is to be supportive and provide information about a team.

these reporters think they are working for the NYT writing pullitzer prize stories and uncovering corruption and finding the truth.

Be respectful and supportive - all you need to do

That's what happens when you hire kids right out of college. They are learning on the job.

It was hard. The hard part was trying to help Steven make the right decision, without unduly influencing him. Robert's father is probably experiencing the same thing. I really don't envy him right now. Hopefully, the stress on his family will soon be a lot less.

This is not a bad idea, honestly.

Yea I know they all like to be investigative reported and will talk to family, coaches, teammates. But trying to get info from the girlfriend is douche.
Totally agree. It is douchy.

I think "douchiness" is a prerequisite for his job.

Unless Sr. was mis-quoted, it is on him to avoid reporters if he doesn't want a recruitment piece done on his son. Period.

True.

He is somewhat vulnerable, though. All parents want to talk up their kids. Reporters know this, and can say the right things to manipulate a parent to say stuff better left unsaid. It's a part of the job.

Plus you have to understand that you can't print EVERYTHING you're told. Some things are clearly being told in confidence and you have to know when something might be off the record, even if he didn't come right out and say it.

Exactly. No one is going to win the Pulitzer due to breaking news of a recruitment decision. In this instance its ok to be second with the news. Like reporting a death at an accident.

which article is Sr. talking about?

The one where the father told Bailey that Syracuse fans didn't need to worry. That they were in a good place with Robert.

Is what the local Syr media is doing all that different than what the other local medias out there do?

Somehow I think Robert will do as Steven did, ignore all the pomp, and circumstance, of the Big Schools, and go with family at Syracuse.

This is just how creepily insane the whole process has got. I'm not sure if this is going on in Robert's case, but there have been plenty of examples all over the country where the schools are recruiting the girlfriend just as hard as the actual recruit. The whole process is bizarre. I'm not sure i'd ever be able to do it.

I think the problem with the local media, at least the problem that I have with them, is that the expectation is that they will have access to the sports programs at Syracuse above and beyond what the average person off the street has.

When you do things that antagonize the powers that be, or things that show that they can't trust you, then you're not going to have that access and the readers are the ones that ultimately suffer. It's the conflict of a journalist trying to make a name for himself vs the content for the reader. The former seems to have been prioritized over the latter as of late. And I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we now have a revolving pool of cub reporters as our beat writers.

Maybe people are content reading interviews with recruits and getting regurgitations of free material from recruiting websites. I have a subscription to one of the sites so I already get that first hand. What I don't get that I used to get from the PS was a glimpse of the inner workings of the program.

Yeah and we know that 24/7 has been very wrong in there predictions before.

They aggregate predictions, it's not just one guy.

When insiders from three other teams on his list say Syracuse, there is something there.

This is exactly what my issue with them is. Look at the access Rahme was given because he wasn't into "shock" reporting. As a reader i'd much rather have that, then what we are getting now.

Yeah that's a great example, what Rahme was able to produce vs what is being produced now is night and day. This isn't about ragging on journalism in general, which seems to be the regular response to any criticism of the PS. It's about a product we used to have that is now gone.
